Wedding Woes

Work vent thread!

We haven't had one of these in a while! Here goes:

1. Work husband #1 lost a document on his desktop. He does this at least once a week, and I always come to his rescue. He told me the name of the child in the complaint. . . The file name was the child's name. An unusual name too.

2. A social worker called me at 12:30 to ask about what he should do with an emergency situation. I told him he needed to come up *now* to file an emergency motion to take custody of the child. He says OK. Ten minutes pass. He sends up a coworker who has NO knowledge of the case. The managing attorney tells the coworker that he needs to come up NOW to do the filing. Thirty minutes pass, and the social worker FINALLY comes up. I happened to pass by the office where he was working on the filing, and he was on his phone (not looking at anything related to the case; I think he was on Snapchat)  while two attorneys were working with him and a third was observing.

3. Nothing else specific, but it feels like everyone left their brains somewhere over the weekend and didn't bother to pick them up before going to work on Tuesday.

Re: Work vent thread!

  • I have a dog's breakfast of a schedule this year (5 different courses, to 3 different grades, and 2 are complete brand new to me this year).  And they're adding 2 new option classes to my schedule next year, which I get to create.  So not only is there no curriculum I can learn and follow, I need to create 2 completely new classes.  I'm already burnt out and ready for this school year to be done and I'm now I'm too tired to even think about next year.  And I'm pretty sure it's all cos my CW's work wife has the hots for him yet I work closely with him.  4 more weeks till final exams.  I can do this

  • 1.  It often feels like I have competing priorities at work: the shit management wants done to make their number look good v. the shit that I believe actually needs to get done.

    2. Because of (1.), it always feels like 40 hours in the work week isn't close to being enough time, and since OT isn't an option management wants to consider (nor does it pay well when they actually do), I always feel like I'm miles behind.  Especially when I take any time off.

    3. Long commutes suck.

A coworker is leaving for another job and she is our go to person for HR consulting for clients. Apparently we don't feel the need to fully replace her and instead I am getting dragged into some of this stuff and will apparently have to take on part of her job. Ummm I don't know anything about HR; I help out this coworker with research and stuff but there's no way I can consult with clients or help answer their questions.  Not to mention I don't have time since I am already a department of 1 since we didn't replace my coworker who retired almost 2 years ago.
  • My bus no showed, then the next bus was 10min late AND shorter one, so some people didn't get to board.

I'm doing things I've been avoiding for a bit because today already sucks. So mindless filing, scanning, etc for meeeee

    Fuckkkkkk this day
  • We have a hot purchase order the big boss wants me to stay on top of.  So he sends me a numbered list of the steps he wants me to take over the coming months, in regards to this PO.  That's all fine.  But then he ends his e-mail with "EXPEDITING 101".

Ummm...yes...thanks.  I've been expediting the POs for this client site for over 4 years.  Maybe I'm reading into it and he didn't mean anything by it.  But that last sentence felt a bit patronizing/scolding.  It really rubbed me the wrong way.

  • I'm a 9 month employee, meaning I don't have to be in the office, meet with students, take meetings during the summer. But department chair used emailed asking when I can meet. And students emailed asking for appointments. Umm... no. Not unless you're going to pay me for work in the summer.
  • It's been sunny here the last couple of days and the big boss is letting people leave early. However it's only the people he likes who suck up to him. And I can't bring myself to do it. Blatant favoritism in an office is frustrating and makes me feel like I'm back in middle school. :(
  • Our new F&B director is refusing to email us the schedule.  We have always had our scheduled emailed.   It's so strange because he love technology. Instead of setting up a group email and clicking once to sent to to everyone, he would rather print some 50 scheduled that NO ONE TAKES, because we all just take a snap shot.    It's 2017, people like the easy of something like a schedule on their phone.  They also do not like to have to drive some 20 minutes to pick up a schedule because they only work a few days a week and it's not on the day(s) around when the schedule drops.

On another note, this guy likes change for the sake of change.  I fucking HATE those types of new managers.    Don't get me wrong, I'm not a "we've always done it that way" type of person either.    I think a good new manger reviews the entire operations to see what works and what doesn't.  He has been here 2 months in which the club was CLOSED for 6 of those weeks.  And the 2 weeks it was opened it was slow time.

We are about to hit our crazy time and some of his changes are going to come back and bite him in the ass.  Like removing 4 prime tables from an already limited area.  Our members NEVER complained about it being crowded.  Ever.  But they fucking complained all the time for "having" to sit where he moved those 4 tables.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

No nap time in general :(
  • We are having "classroom" days right now where we meet as a group and go over important concepts.  The table I am at today will not shut the fuck up.  It's disruptive and disrespectful to the lecturer.  I want to sit at another table when I come back from lunch, but I don't want to create enemies by being obvious. I have to work with these people long term and I don't want any drama (and they seem prone to drama). Last time I sit with them though.

here's one - and part of the reason that i haven't eaten lunch today

Person: "X doesn't match Y, and I don't know what to do. You need to fix this."
Me: " my department has nothing to do with this process. we are LEGALLY NOT ALLOWED TO DO THE THING, NOR DO WE HAVE TRAINING. you need to check to make sure that the information used to make X was correct, and was input in the system correctly. If not, correct the input to X and you will probably be ok. If it was all correct on the first try, then PM 1 and PM 2 need to check with your accountant because they may be able to assist if there's a master data or system issue."

^^^^this is not the first time I have had this conversation with this person.

    5 minutes later
Person: "I'm the one who made X"
Me: "Ok, so as I said, if you know all of the inputs were correct, then PM1 and 2 need to call accountant to see if they can help. if accountant can't help they need to talk to BIG BOSS, because this will impact BB. once again my department CANNOT LEGALLY DO ANY OF THIS STUFF, NOR ARE WE TRAINED."

    5 minutes later:
PM1: "Person made X, but Y doesn't match. I didn't do anything that you instructed me to do, and I want to argue about it because your group should be doing this. MAKE YOUR GROUP DO THEIR JOB."
Me: (to myself... FFS....) "Look, i gave you 3 options. From a legal and training standpoint, i can do NOTHING TO HELP YOU. Do what I suggested. Until you have Y complete/approved, my team can't do their job." *phone drop*

unfortunately, i have this conversation multiple times every day.

one of the few things that i dislike about my company is that while you "have the option to do anything!" you only have that option if you come through specific departments. mine is not one. yet, due to my experience, and knowledge base, I am probably a much better candidate for a job that I want (and will probably never have) than one of the "chosen people" that came through the "right" entry level job.  One of my targeted jobs is to be a "Project Manager" - in terms of my department, that's my title - but i want to manage the whole project and not just my department's aspect. The sad thing is that i work with a lot of "project managers" who have no idea what the fuck they are doing - and i actually know their job better than they do. PM1 that wrote the nastygram - all of this stuff falls within his job (he would provide data for "X" and approve "Y") - yet he has no idea how to prevent this issue, how to fix this issue, or why any of the 3 options that i gave him to troubleshoot are better than me.

They just put out the job description for the HR position they're hiring (see my vent above) and no where does it mention an HR background. Instead it is more sales support, project management stuff like other positions we have.  FML

There's a secretarial position in another unit that I need to apply for, and I've got myself psyched out that I can't do it. I've been late too many times. I've had too many problems with my mental health. I can't get decent clerical references in the past few years (apart from my current job), because I spent four years tutoring, substitute teaching, and doing home care. My boss will fire me if I try to leave. I keep making excuses.

Someone needs to go into my brain and make me apply for that job.

My office prides itself on being "perfect" and complains that anything less "wastes time." But to achieve that desired state requires ESP.

I'm not clairvoyant, so I spend each day walking on eggshells.

To top that off, my job doesn't pay enough. I lose money every month because I have to drain my savings to pay for anything besides rent, a few groceries, insurance and utilities.

Yes, I'm job hunting. No success.
  • What an awful place to work, @Jen4948. Sending lots of positive job vibes!

    Thanks!
  • My work vent is sort of non-conventional because it's more me pissed at myself.

Lately I've been making mistakes and I'm PISSED at myself because I have NO idea why! The downside is that it means I can't take the course this year, which means if I get pregnant then I have to wait until I come back from mat leave to take the course. And it just irks me ....

I'm being notably better at everything .... just pissed at myself cuz it's not mistakes that can be 'fluffed off' *sigh*
  • I mentioned yesterday that our parts guy is missing a lot of work that he's still getting paid for. Well...our service manager is fired up about it and held a meeting regarding attendance and tardiness yesterday. Apparently, parts guy stood there smugly until service manager said, "And Ben, you're the worst one. You leave out of here and never tell me you're leaving then I spend 30 minutes looking for you." That upset Ben and he's been in the branch manager's office for the last half hour discussing it. I mean...dude, literally all you're being asked to do is let the service manager know when you're leaving.
  • Ugh, work vents. I work in compliance now. Very exciting for me. Scary to other people. I'm supposed to "support" other teams in their compliance endeavors but people view compliance as 'police' so it's hard to make headway on anything. Ooooo change management, so scary....

Well, there's been a minor bone of contention over some information that we share publicly. A VP seems to think something is not required, yet a rulebook I have that's dated 2012- two thousand twelve- says it IS required.

I wanted to go all Trump vs Clinton on her and say "Wrong. Wrong." but of course I didn't. AND when I gave a personal story to illustrate the purpose of the rule, I got really pissed that she replied this policy is about something I "feel" (feel? excuse me? it's logic, and it's rules, thanks).

So now I'm gonna hit her and her group with a PPT deck full of policies from our external regulator and "highlights" excerpted from our rulebook (which directly contradict what she thinks) and "recommend" the business make change to comply with said rule.

A VP should know better. Grrrr.

    preach it compliance sista @thisismynickname
  • This is only a minor vent.  More a slight eye roll, that really doesn't affect me much.

One of the things I do is create packages for our detailing subcontractor.  If you're curious, a detailer is someone who takes a drawing from engineering and determines things like "what steel piece or type of bolt goes where".  So, when the PM for the steel department gives me the go-ahead to create a package, I'm working on that the same day or the next.  One of the things I need is a packet that Doc Control usually makes a copy of.

Doc Control had two people laid off in December.  They are short-staffed and don't get the packets to me quickly anymore.  NBD at all.  I am perfectly capable of printing my own packet.  That's what I've been doing since Dec. and will even give them a heads up, each time, that I've already made my copy.

Except they still make the copy.  Usually it is days later.  Yesterday, they brought me one from over a month ago, lol.  Really, really.  I don't need this a month later.  I just threw it away/put it in recycling.  I've reminded them a few times that they don't need to bring me a copy anymore, but I just give up now.

    Customer vent -
Customer calls and asks for parts (we only have 1 person in parts).

Me: I'm sorry, he's out to lunch. Would you like his voicemail?

Customer: I just need to ask him if you have some parts in stock.

Me: Okay. He's out to lunch. Would you like his voicemail?

C: No. I'll try back later.

Telling me why you're calling isn't going to suddenly make him appear. Unfortunately, this is a multiple times a day occurrence.

To be fair, maybe he was hoping if he told you why he was calling that there was someone else who could answer his question.

I'm assuming this is the same "parts guy" who is absent a lot?  For that caller's sake, hopefully this isn't a "leaving early for a dr.'s appt." day, lol.

This one it's possible that he thought there might be someone else, but many of them know we only have the one guy or they'll ask "Is there anyone else I can talk to?" I'll tell them there's not and then they say, "Well I just want to know..."

And yes it is the absentee guy and fortunately it's not a dr's appt day.
  • my job is a lot of herding cats.
on the plus side, i get to attend a "group hug session" for one of my new projects in a few months, and will probably stay in a casino for a few days because it's the only decent hotel within a 20 or so mile radius of the town.

I can relate. Saying "I just have a quick question," is not going to make my boss less busy than she is.
