Hump Day!

Re: Hump Day!

  • @short+sassy Per the Whole30 rules, if you slip up even unintentionally, you're supposed to start the whole program over. It's nuts how strict the rules are and how even one tiny bite of something that's not allowed can apparently through off any results you might see. It's supposed to help people develop a better relationship with food, but like I said it just made me way more anxious about eating. Not a fan of it. The basic premise is great but far too restrictive.
  • right, technically as a diabetic I have to watch fruit too because of high sugar content.  Berries are lower in sugar, so berries are the "better" fruits.

There are these no-sugar-added chocolate covered raisins that I get from Amazon.  I love having one of my favorite candy options with substantially fewer simple carbs.  But I still have to keep it a small portion size.  Because, raisins.

Some jerk gave this awesome and delicious item 1-star.  And had this angry rant about he had ordered them, but couldn't eat them, because they weren't sugar-free and still had too many carbs because it's raisins and raisins have a lot of carbs.

So, first off.  One of the pics for the item is the nutritional label.  He could have easily seen how many carbs a serving size had if he had just looked.  They also do not use the term "sugar free" anywhere.

But, most importantly, wtf did this guy think he was buying?  No sugar-added chocolate covered FAKE raisins, lmao?  I don't know.  Maybe that was his first time realizing that dried fruit is extremely high in natural sugars (shrug).

  • A boho flowery dress - L-O-L. I'd wearing a tight black dress.

I'm doing sort of Whole 30. I'm allowing myself a little bit of fruit, and a tiny drop of honey in my tea. But damn, I just want some chocolate right now!

Is no-sugar-added chocolate a no-no?  It's not quite as good as the real thing, but not too far off.  Should satisfy the craving.  Russell Stover is probably one of the better brands that are easily available at any Rite Aid/Walgreens type place.  They have both bagged candies of various chocolate choices and boxes of chocolate.

I'm pretty sure the only "sugar" it would have is some lactose from the dairy ingredients.

There are also all kinds of those Ensure-type chocolate shakes.  Those usually don't have any/little sugar in them.

My Walmart used to carry the whitmans sugar free sampler and the regular one. Right now, it's just the regular box.  I will keep checking but whitman's is another good brand!

edit: Also, I think it's $5.96 or something along those lines.  Could be cheaper....and seriously comparable to the fancy gourmet stuff.
I'll let @climbingwife chime in with how strict she is being on Whole30, but the rules of the program state no sugar, no treats, no chocolate, no anything that even resembles junk food. It also states no artificial or natural sugars - so technically honey wouldn't be allowed. Even if you bake paleo bread and it also all "approved ingredients", it still violates the spirit of the program. Fruit is okay, as long as it's not being used to satisfy a sweet tooth and it's eaten in small amounts throughout the 30 days.

Oh sure, I have no doubt that no-sugar-added chocolate would technically not be allowed.  There is definitely no nutritional value, lol.  They also still have a chunk of calories.  Nowadays, a lot of companies use natural sweeteners (like Stevia) instead of artificial sweeteners.  But it is still going to be junk food.

I'm not that familiar with the Whole30 plan and how even a small change now and then could affect it.  But, on the general subject of eating healthier, I lean more toward having an occasional small portion to satisfy a craving.

Yeah, Whole 30 is pretty damn strict. They say to not even do any sweets/sweetners - no replacing desserts with sugar free options, no stevia. I'm really not even supposed to be putting honey in my tea. It's that's strict.
  • Sorry, hit send too soon. They idea is to get yourself away from sugars/sweets, and to not replace them with "healthier" sweets.

It will be interesting to see how I feel at the end of this.

Thanks for the explanation!  Like anything else, I'm sure it's a good plan for some people.  And the basic premise, which sounds like "eat lean meats and veggies", is great for everyone.

But it sounds like it would do the OPPOSITE of the bolded for many.  "Uh oh, you didn't do everything perfectly?  Then it's all ruined and you need to start over."  Talk about setting someone up to fail!  For someone who is trying to change their food habits and eat healthier, it isn't motivating to feel like you're not doing it good enough.

A program like that would make me feel anxious also.  I'd give way too much time, thought, worry, and energy into everything I put in my mouth.  That is NOT a healthy relationship with food.

Oh, okay!  That part makes sense.

As someone who suddenly and completely cut out all simple carbs when I was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes 24 years ago, I can absolutely verify that is true.  At least it was for me.

Even before my diagnosis, I didn't have much of a sweet tooth.  But after I cut it all out, my taste for sugar plummeted within just a few weeks.  It was FAST!!!  I was shocked how fast, food started tasting way sweeter than it usually did.  I didn't cut out artificial sweeteners, but didn't have much of that in my diet anyway.  I didn't need to totally cut out fruit, but was told to cut WAY back on it.

Fast forward to today.  I am fully aware that my taste buds are completely freakish compared to the average person, lol.  I find so many dishes out there to be disgustingly sweet, even for savory items.

For example, most people love a good tomato sauce.  I don't.  Crushed tomatoes have a really sweet taste to me, even when it doesn't have any added sugar.  And, OMG, most people/restaurants do add crap tons of sugar to tomato sauce, which just makes it worse.  Don't get me wrong.  I'll eat tomato sauce when it is used as a vehicle for something else I like.  For example, a pizza loaded with toppings.  But I don't usually order or make dishes with a marinara sauce.  And I'd have to be pretty hungry to eat a slice of plain cheese pizza.  Cheese pizza doesn't taste bad to me, but it's not appealing at all either.

I don't touch most desserts.  They're not appealing to me.  For the few I do like, I'll typically eat 2-3 bites and I'm done.  Just a small amount is very satisfying.

On the flip side of all this, about a month ago, I started having a lot of difficulty controlling my blood sugar.  It was dropping hard every afternoon.  I still couldn't tell you why.  I wasn't doing anything different.  And after 2-3 weeks it just as magically went back to normal.  But I started drinking 1-2 Cokes or Dr. Peppers every afternoon to get my sugar levels back up.  And frickin', frickin', frick!  Within about a week I started CRAVING a sugar soda every afternoon, even if my blood sugar was fine.  I had to wean myself off the sugar sodas after things got back to normal.  Just like before, so long ago, the sugar craving need started to lessen and was completely gone by about the 3rd week.

The bolded gives me hope! I'm totally guilty of putting way too much honey in my tea, and I know it's bad. I'm craving something sweet after every damn meal, and it's just so easy to snack here. There's always bread and baked goods and candy and chocolate.

This is my pitfall.  I think I just grew up having a dessert at least after one meal of the day (lunch or dinner often both).  I still want something 'sweet' to finish off a meal.  And no, fruit or sugar free jello doesn't count.

  • While this is awful to happen to you (I do understand how important the right dress is), when I read the title of the article before the actual thing, I thought some employees from House of Brides went to their wedding and smashed cake in their faces or unplugged the music or sneezed in all the food?
