How do you guys divide financial things?

Re: How do you guys divide financial things?

  • Right now we both pay half of everything. We started this way when we moved in together.

When we get married and start co-mingling finances, we will do this:

We figured out what our household income is after taxes, retirement and benefits -- basically what we take home each month. Then we determined what % of our household income we each made. That is the % of each household expense we are responsible for. For example, the phone/internet is $100. If I brought in 40% of our household income and fi brought in 60%, I'd pay $40 toward that bill and he'd pay $60.

We will have a joint savings and a joint checking. We listed out all the household expenses, including an amount to put into savings each month. Then we figured out the amounts we each would contribute based on the % of household income. That total of those amounts is what we each put in the joint checking/savings each month. The remainder is what we keep in our personal accounts for our personal expenses (i.e. student loans, daycare expense for my son from my first marriage, car payments etc.) and fun money.
  • For about the last 8 months  FI has been paying rent, cable, car payment, insurance, and students loans.  I have been paying electic, insurance and all the montly wedding bill payments.  He makes much more than I do since I am still in school.  But when we get back from the honeymoon we are opening a joint account and will pay every bill from that acoount.
