Another Monday

How was everyone's weekend?  We celebrated my mom's birthday with our quaranteam on Saturday, lots of swimming and two delicious cakes.  My sister, BIL and their kids were kind of in and out of the house a lot, and my brother was a lot (although he's always at my parents' house so that's different).  My kids and I are doing strict outdoors visits, with the exception of me popping in to pee maybe once per visit. (The kids have a potty outside.)  So I'm going to keep on eye on how safe I feel everyone's being.  I will say I trust that we're all still keeping "in public" to a weekly grocery trip, masked.  This whole pandemic is a headache (when it hasn't been a heartache).

Hope everyone is feeling well!

Re: Another Monday

  • The weekend was good.  I"m not sure if how much I slept was healthy, but it was obviously necessary.  Stayed in on Friday, just watched some movies.  Got up on Saturday and went to get my brows/lashes done.  I'm loving the henna treatment on my brows and will probably keep it up.  Came home, slept most of the day, went to bed, moved to the couch on Sunday, ended up sleeping most of the day too.  That's it.  Just sleep.

Trying to come into this week with a better attitude and a game plan for this "still not working for you, don't know how/why" issue.  My secretary is amazing and is going to be my rock for this plan; I'm annoyed this is what we have to do to keep my work on track.
  • @charlotte989875 100% okay to have a pity party for yourself. Being pregnant, especially at the end is hard enough under normal circumstances and you're doing it during a pandemic. It's normal to grieve the loss of normalcy and plans. Not quite the same, but I felt an immense amount of grief that I didn't get to have the maternity leave I pictured. We were initially laying low because of flu concerns and then the pandemic forced us to stay home permanently. I didn't get to go visit with my mom friends, introduce DD to her cousin that was born shortly before her, couldn't even take her to the grocery store just to get out of the house. Sending you so many hugs!

Sending all the hugs @charlotte989875 that really all sucks.  The end of pregnancy sucks, broiling hot August due dates suck...I just can't imagine with pandemic thrown in.  My sister due 7/27 didn't come to our mom's celebration, she wasn't at the 4th...her hospital tests her for Covid when she arrives and if she's positive, she has to stay for two weeks.  So her quarantine is necessary, but I just feel so bad for her (and you).

@cupcait927 fingers crossed your insurance covers the helmet!

Thank you so much for this, it makes me feel better to know that other people had similar feelings. I’m sure your leave was not at all what you expected! Part of me is worried that if things get worse here we’ll go back into lockdown and people won’t get to meet him, too.

How is your sister doing? It definitely sucks.

Our hospital is similar, we don’t have an extended stay but if either of us test positive we can’t hold the baby except me to breastfeed then he has to be in a bassinet/isolette so he doesn’t catch it. It’s sad to think he could only be held by nurses if one/both of us gets sick.  We’re 3 weeks out now so just trying to avoid big groups, anything unnecessary out in public.
  • The weekend was a mixed bag.  We had fun boating and spending time with our friends.  No one got sunburned.  Our awning for the boat was the best addition since it was nice to have some shade/coverage, finally.  We did a sunset 'cruise' Thursday night that was just perfect.

Our campsite was on an incline, which made it ridiculously hard to traverse.  DH got poison ivy last week and it got way worse over the weekend.  We need to put down better stop strips (which we have) on the boat, because everyone was slipping on the back.  I fell off the back, bruising my ass and slicing my foot open on the fin on the way down.  I also lost my pinky toenail.  And then it stormed all night Saturday and everything was completely soaked, plus it was a muddy-ass mess trying to pack up yesterday.  Plus, I'm FIL'd out for a hot minute because the man is exhausting and even worse when he's traveling.

DH got a virtual appt today and is going on a stronger dose of steroids, plus an antibiotic.  My foot is slowly healing, but since the cut is on my heel, walking is very hard/painful.  My calf feels pretty strained from having to walk on the ball of my foot.

And mom's 60th party was at my house a year ago today and her actual bday is Weds.  So that's piling on the overall feeling of suck to start the week.

Local school systems are starting to rethink their opening plans.  I'm kind of hoping our school will start virtually or push back our start date, but I think other county schools would have to do that for us to even consider it.  DefConn's masks come Weds and we'll be practicing wearing them right away.  He wears them to the store, but that's not all day.

I'm glad to hear Washington is finally getting their shit together.  I'm sure it comes down to $$$ rather than morality.
  • My cleaning lady is coming back on Tuesday so I spent the weekend decluttering in preparation. Not a fun project but I was able to get rid of a ton of stuff and once it’s all cleaned tomorrow I think my apartment will feel dramatically different.  My quarantine buddies (a married couple of friends who live 5 minutes away) have been in Florida visiting a sick relative for a couple weeks now and are going to be away another week and then quarantined another two and I’m really missing them! We’ve had a ton of heat and thunderstorms and I’m feeling cooped up so going to try and get out for a walk every day this week.
  • 3 weeks @charlotte989875, this is so crazy to me.  I fee like your announcement was just yesterday.  And the last 6.5 months felt like 6.5 years to boot.

    what are boat strips, @mrsconn23?

i was much like @starmoon44 this weekend and spent most of it organizing cupboards and cleaning out my closet.  Making new room for the clothing and shoes on their way. Oh yeah, I caved last night and bought a pair of Good American crop jeans (yeah yeah yeah, it’s a Kardashian brand). Their sizing makes NO sense so I have no idea if my 15’s will fit.  Does this jump from 14,15,16 make sense?  Sizes 0 to 10 was all 1” difference in the waist & hip too, then BAM:

I’m a little embarrassed to say how much I love my Good American jeans. I have regular ones and maternity ones (that I may wear post pregnancy because they’re so comfy). I’m generally a 10 and those fit good, I also have a 12 and the waist is a little lower than I’d like but the thighs are good so I just wear a belt. That 15 sizing is weird since it’s the only odd number.

It's basically almost like sandpaper and super grippy even when wet.  It will give sure footing on the back of the boat.  We have some stuff down now, but it's bullshit.  We need to put it down EVERYWHERE.  I'm not the only person who was sliding around on the back and/or fell off, I just have a talent to do the most damage on the way down.

It hurts to sit on hard chairs because my ass is so bruised up.  LOL

Ouch @mrsconn23.  Quick healing vibes sent your way. My parents bought a pontoon but I don’t think we need that.  The previous owners soldered off the ladder (they used it for fishing) So our main focus is getting a ladder so I can get back on it with some dignity.  Lol

@charlotte989875 I did my research on jeans before buying. The reviews are REALLY good and everyone writes how they’re obsessed with them.  I need help with my flat derrière, and apparently these work.

  • Weekend was decent!

I tried and felt pretty successful in making croissants

We showed the kids the Mighty Ducks and The Great Muppet Caper Friday and Saturday night and yesterday we dipped into the pool and had dinner with MIL and FIL.

Today Chiquita has a physical and we get to practice the new COVID protcols in the office.   Time to mask up!

    @banana468 the croissants looks amazing!
@mrsconn23 ouch!  Hope you and H start to feel better soon!
@charlotte989875 she's feeling alright, just so so over everything
  • The weekend was really, really frustrating and I'm still feeling the effects.  We were all set to have tenants move-in on Sunday.  I was already kind of pissed my H had told them that was okay because it was very pressuring, since all the ducks weren't in a row yet.  We spent so much time going over things with them.  Over an hour getting their lease ready.  I have a template, but it still takes awhile to tweak it just right for each property/tenant.

They just needed to finish the "official" online background check to make sure there were no evictions or violent felonies.  They told us they had, but I wasn't seeing it.  Even "pending".  The parents don't speak English, but their three sons do and the oldest was the primary communicator.  He's an adult, but a young one.  He was the one who was going to fill out the background check for parents.  I think he was "confusing" the free sign-up you have to do with the website, with actually submitting the background check that costs $25 paid directly to the website.  Which we'd also told them.  So, you'd think when they didn't pay anything, that would have been a clue it wasn't properly submitted.  Whatever.

I finally figured out what was probably happening on Sun. morning.  I looked on our application and, unfortunately I missed it the first time, but there was no SSN written on it.  NBD.  Or at least I think NBD.  We got back in touch with the son, "Hey, sounds like you only signed up for the website but didn't submit the background check.  We'll walk you through it over the phone if you need us to, but you all can't move in until it's done.  BTW, what's your father's SSN?  It's not on the application, plus you'll need it handy to enter it for the background check."

Father doesn't have a SSN.  Neither does the mother.  Neither does the adult son.  Yeeeaahhh.  Now I know for a fact the background check wasn't submitted.  F**k!!! We wasted so much valuable time.  We were also emotionally looking forward to have everything set and done.  And now we're back at the drawing board, smh.  I was even regularly checking the site many times on Sat.  wondering why I wasn't even seeing anything submitted, when they kept swearing it was.  I mean, I guess he's a 21-year-old who didn't get it that the kind of background checks we're talking about are done with a SSN.  Thought that was obvious, apparently not.

I'm sorry to vent so much.  But the application process and explaining requirements is already exhausting.  Apparently I also need to add to the requirements that a valid social security number is needed to run the criminal/eviction/credit check records.

And just for the cherry on top.  We still have to waste our time on Sunday and drive all the way out there, so we can promptly return their holding deposit.

We actually have a few more good looking applications that came in.  I'm checking the references today.  Hoping one of them pans out and we'll have another holding deposit soon to "cement it in".  They're non-refundable if the tenant changes their mind, so that is always a strong sign.  But obviously not perfect, lol.  Like what happened this weekend.  I had one other occasion on a previous vacancy where we collected a holding deposit, but had to return it because she couldn't provide a valid landlord reference.

  • Well, I had to work this weekend in preparation for Tax Day this Wednesday, but yesterday I accomplished what was for me a major personal goal. I finally went through piles of paper that were catching dust, sorted them out and discarded a ton of old crap. I even had the pleasure of shredding some with negative associations. So now I have a cleaner house and space. I even have the satisfaction of being one up on my parents, who have been trying to do the same for months.  ;)  We're social distancing again because all of the spikes in Houston coronavirus cases. And I'm still seeing people going around in public without masks.  :#
  • We had a really good weekend for the most part. Friday night we hung out and had dinner with FSIL and FBIL. Saturday did have kind of an awful moment. I’m pretty sure FSIL and I prevented an assault from happening on our hike. There was a guy on the trail who we had passed earlier and who had instantly given us bad vibes. Dude was also dressed in a hoodie (it was 110 out) with it pulled far over his face. When we were behind him he hid in a shadow for a moment, and another girl passed him walking in the opposite direction. He instantly turned around and started to follow her. So we turned around too. He noticed us. Then when we got to a fork in the trail he stopped and looked back at us to see which way we were going. Obviously we went in the same direction as the girl. We jogged up to her and warned her then finished the hike together. She hadn’t even noticed. I just wish we could have done more because the guy was clearly predatory but he booked it after we made it clear we had seen him. I’m really glad we were on the trail together and that FSIL didn’t go by herself like originally planned. It’s a really popular hike but it was the emptiest I’ve ever seen it (because it was hot as fucking hell).

Yesterday was a lot of fun. It was FBIL’s birthday, so I made brunch and it was delicious. I took today off from work and I’m kind of wishing I’d taken an extra day too. But I’m grateful for the short work week. Last week was so long and terrible. I’m glad it’s off to a better start already.

@short+sassy does it have to be an SSN or can someone with a TIN still apply/get a background check?
  • And I'm pretty sure I just caught another instance of landlord info falsification, smh.  S**t, is this more common than I thought it was?  I'm starting to doubt my own sanity.  And this was someone who had a little bit of a checkered past, but was honest about it, and I was good with that they described.  In fact, I've spent a LOT of time chatting with her (relatively speaking).  But now this.

Here's what it was.  I look up the owner of where she is currently living.  The name doesn't match the landlord she put down.  Not necessarily an automatic bs.

But then, huh.  I recognize the owner's name.  It's her supervisor at her job.  Now that is a red flag!  Fortunately, we hadn't done the employment check yet, my H is doing that.  I told him, after the employment check, to ask in a friendly tone, "Oh, does she rent from you also?"  And pay close attention to her reaction.

  • Yikes @levioosa sounds shady.  So glad there are people out there like you.  I also don’t pay attention to my surroundings.

  • @levioosa You probably saved her life in more ways than one. Thank you for being there for her even if she didn't realize it.
  • Damn @levioosa that is my biggest fear running/hiking alone. It’s one of the reasons I rarely trail run even though it’s so much better for your legs. It’s terrifying.

  • Weekend was nice!  IL's came over on Saturday and hung out with the baby while H and i got SO MUCH DONE around the house.  I did a bunch of meal prep and scrubbed all our tile floors, H took his car in for a few repairs and then started cleaning out the basement storage room.  Yesterday was super lazy.

I've been fighting headaches for the last few days.  I've been getting them the last few month around the time I ovulate (and my boobs hurt and i get crazy cramps).  This is all new since the babe and it's not very fun at all.  At least my periods are shorter now.

Starting to get busy at work today.

@levioosa holy crap I'm so glad you guys were around and paying attention
@short+sassy I'm sorry about your tenants, hope you find someone soon

THIS is a good question!  It's actually on my to-do list to get in touch with the website who does my eviction/criminal/credit checks if a TIN will work for that also.

I did a little of my own research and I'm not sure it would.  It seems like more an IRS thing.  So it might work for a credit check, but maybe not criminal records.

With that said, they didn't even offer up TIN number(s) either.

Something similar happened to me before I was pregnant; I’d get sever almost migraine like headaches on the first two days of my period and then they would subside. I ended up having to switch birth control because of it.

    Good luck! It totally sucks.

To be fair, I don't think most rental owners do take the extra step of checking property records even when it's easy.  And at least nationwide, it's not always easy to pull that up because some jurisdictions don't put property records online.  They're public records, but you have to go down to city hall to pull them up.  This is all stuff in the pre-app, that I don't charge people for.  The official website one doesn't pull that kind of thing up.

NOLA is such an old-fashioned, non-techie town, I am so thankful...yet also surprised, lol...that it's online and such a quick, piece of cake here.

It didn't used to be, though that was before I owned rentals.  After Katrina...which was only 15 years ago...it was an "oh s**t", we really need to step up getting all the property records digitalized.  To his credit, the guy who has been running the assessor's office for something like 20-30 years, made it a major priority.  An enormous task, but they knocked it out in 1-2 years.

Thanks for letting me second-hand brag a little, lol.  Government agencies get such crap, often deservedly, so I like to give a call-out when something good and helpful happens.

As for the criminal/eviction/credit check, I think some people will hope that whatever bad thing is out there won't come out.  But it costs them money to find out, so I do find that most people will 'fess up about what I'm going to find.
