Tuesday!

Another grossly hot day here.  Not that I should complain about the weather, I know most of you have had to deal with the 90s for much more than the last couple days.  Very SSDD here, hope everyone is feeling alright.

You know it's hot when you're by the shore at 7 PM and just SITTING makes you sweat.  The marina has a rule that when you walk down the dock (I think it's 1/8 mile) that you need to wear a mask and boy was it hot in that thing.

Tonight will probably be another night at the pool.   I need to make a pesto with all the basil we have and that can be a nice room temp sauce for noodles.   I do have a zucchini that I plan to make into fries and brownies too.
  • We're no longer in the 90's here, just the mid to upper 80's. It's much more manageable.

Mostly SSDD.  I mean, it's Tuesday.  Lame.

I talked for over an hour with SIL/BFF last night.  We hadn't talked in a couple weeks, so it was nice to BS with her for awhile.

We've started DefConn's 'back to school' schedule. We're still going back in person next week.  It seriously feels like a game of chicken and they're going to push back our start OR decide to go virtual at the last second.

Tomorrow is my day off, thankfully.  DefConn and I have some running around to do.
  • H and I are going through a thing right now and it sucks. My feelings are hurt, his feelings are hurt and we're both just letting it sit without resolving it because we don't know what the resolution looks like.

Otherwise SSDD. I'm tired of getting abused by my clients at work. I had so many HR reps that I worked with and loved but after coming back from maternity leave, all of them are gone or in other roles. The people I work with now suck (for lack of a better term). It makes it incredibly difficult to like my job any longer.
  • It's hot here too. Only 85 so far, because it's 9 am, but it will be 90 soon. I'm not seeing any of the rain I was promised.

So in fun news, we're tentatively talking about inviting the extended family for Thanksgiving. The majority of my family are back home, but my parents and sister live here. Some years we go back home for t-giving; some years we just stay here with the local family and invite in-laws. If it happens, it will be about 25 people at my house for the big meal. I'm both excited and terrified.

Oh I hope it works out.  We're planning to to go to SIL/BIL's in GA for thanksgiving as long as there isn't massive closures/travel restrictions.  DH and I have already started gaming how to do it safely, with as few stops as possible.

My aunt asked my grandpa if her kids and their families (4 kids, 3 spouses, and 4 grandkids, and they live all over the country) could come to his house for Christmas.  I guess grandpa hesitated, which annoyed my aunt.  But grandpa is 87...so that's lot for him without a pandemic.  Geeze louise.
  • That's great news @VarunaTT!  Congratulations to them!

  • CONGRATS TO K!!!!!!!!! <3
  • @kvruns thanks - I know you understand completely the work part of it. And I totally forgot that this is one of your busy seasons - fingers crossed that everyone signs by 7/31 and you don't have to hunt too many people down.

thanks I'm down to 8 5500s left! I usually am done by now but I was so busy with Covid consulting in March-April that I got a late start. And now all the covd19 questions are ramping up again
  • Congrats to K @VarunaTT, that’s a huge accomplishment for them!!! Especially given how terribly the semester ended!
  • That sucks @cupcait927 both the work and the H stuff. Everyone has those times when things aren’t sitting right and it just sucks. Hoping it doesn’t lag too long and you two can work it out. My BFF said the first year of her twins life were the hardest on her marriage; they were both exhausted, they weren’t seeing eye to eye on a lot and it was just all around hard.
  • Oh, also since I was out yesterday b/c of how mad and unsafe I felt at work, I went and did my final intake appointment to get my therapy restarted.  I knew that I'd probably have a wait for my first appointment, but it was shocking to find out the soonest was September 15.  **sigh**  At least I got all of their assessments finished.  I was dx'd with major depressive disorder, mod to severe, and generalized anxiety, mod to severe.  First time I've had an anxiety dx and really the first time I've ever had to deal with it.  The woman doing my intake (I think I had to do this b/c I was self-referral in, not by my doctor) was sweet and gave me some more ideas to help while waiting.
  • It’s Tuesday. I have very little on my work list today so I’m just trying to get through.

H is in a funk again. Since his company was bought his role is changing (again) and he’s super frustrated. He’s been with the company three years and has had three different jobs in that time, but not in a way that is a clear upward progression, the first two seemed like lateral changes. So he’s really frustrated because he’s not sure what his role is in the new structure and his boss (who is a Exec VP) isn’t clear about that either. She’s basically said they’ll figure it out when he’s back from parental leave (he gets 4 weeks). And there’s not a lot of hiring happening so looking externally now isn’t the best.

He just gets so down when it comes to work; he’s usually so stoic and not much at all ruffles him, but he’s taking this hard. And he’s not sleeping (and neither did I last night) so it’s all a lot here today.

Wow, I know waiting lists are long but two months seems, way too long.
  • ((hugs)) @VarunaTT.  That's such a long wait.  I hope her tips help you in the interim.
  • @VarunaTT Congrats to K! And oh my gosh that wait time is insane. I know it's hard to get into see therapists but damn.

@charlotte989875 I can only imagine how frustrating all of that must be for your H. So many people are struggling at work lately and Covid isn't making it any easier because there's not a lot out there job-wise. Is he going to take any PFL to stay out longer with you and the baby, or take any when you go back to work and he can stay home?

He might; PFL is at 60% of his pay plus his company requires that he pay the insurance premium on the PFL when he takes it, so it’s close to like 50% (or less) pay coming in. He does have unlimited PTO (which realistically is more like 6 weeks) so he might take some time when I go back, he can’t add that to his parental leave because he has to be back for a full pay cycle before taking PTO. I get 12weeks but I can add on any PTO on to my leave. Mine gets extended to 16 weeks if I need a csection too so we’re sort of leaving all of our leave options open as much as possible.
  • @charlotte989875 totally makes sense to leave your options open. H had a week of paternity leave, plus he had 4 weeks of vacation and 10 weeks of PFL. He took a combo of paternity leave, vaca and PFL for the first 5 weeks I was out. I went back after 12 weeks and then he took the last 8 of his PFL. We had been toying with the idea of him just taking a couple PFL days a week instead of all 8 weeks at once, but then Covid happened and it made more sense to keep her home as long as possible. And considering we don't know what's going to happen in the fall with the pandemic, it might turn out to be a good thing if he has PFL left to take.

@charlotte989875 I'd still encourage him to look externally because you never know. I tihnk we've hired 6 new people during the pandemic which is actually more than usual for that type of time frame. Everyone has been virtually onboarded, etc so places are hiring. Might not be true for his industry but worth a look.

    congrats to K! @VarunaTT

I’m never going to get caught up at work. Yesterday we had the most positives (at our clinic) than we’ve ever had in a single day. I really like to finish all of my work the day of, so constantly being “in the hole” for the next day gets to me a little.

FSIL and I did a hike yesterday. It was still pretty hot when we started, around 92, but it was nice by the time we finished. She sprained her ankle pretty badly at the end of it so I’m a little concerned for her because she has zero chill and wont stay off of it. There was a crack and it instantly began to swell and bruise so it’s not off the table that she might have fractured it. More likely a really bad sprain but those are actually worse. Ugh.

Otherwise SSDD here. Just trying to be in a better mood about work than I was last week.

  • @levioosa I'm in awe of your ability to go on the hikes that you do in that kind of heat. It gets above 85 here and doing anything outdoors feels like a chore.

    @cupcait927, I hope you and your H come to a good resolution/compromise.

@VarunaTT, congrats to K!!!  I'm sorry your workplace continues to be so trying.  I'm really not impressed with mine either, from a safety standpoint.  A coworker whose cube is in the same room as mine was diagnosed with COVID.  None of us were told anything, except for the two people that had gone to lunch with her.  They just disappeared from the office one day and returned two weeks later.  I get that my workplace can't name names.  But not even a caution?  Really?  I think a caution should have gone out to the whole floor, but at least the people like myself who work in the same large cube room and share the room's printer with her.  But apparently not.

@MyNameIsNot, you can do it!  Great way to break in the new dining room set in the new house.

We're still chugging along with rental unit #3 and continue to have a lot of interest, despite it being 1-2 weeks out from being completed.  We have an applicant who had applied for unit #2, but didn't have her voucher yet at the time (she's on a Section 8, a gov't rental assistance program).  But she notified us late last week that she has it now and is really interested in unit #3.  Yay on follow-up, that's a good sign!  I'll be checking her landlord references today and am "hoping" to start moving forward.

There's another S8 person that I've chatted to a good bit and spoke to on the phone yesterday.  I really like her also and she seems really interested.  But she hasn't seen the property yet, so hasn't turned in an application.

From speaking to both of these ladies, it sounds like it's tough right now to find places taking S8, which I found surprising.  It wasn't like that before the pandemic but, right now, it seems like rental demand has surged past supply.  Which is unusual for here.  We usually have a soft rental market.  I am definitely sympathetic, but have to admit it's come at the best time for me!  I've never had so many vacancies and upcoming vacancies, because we're unexpectedly finishing up the rest of the duplex units within the same two months.  Plus I have the other unit my tenant recently vacated.

I almost didn't come into work today because I'm feeling crappy (not COVID related, at least I highly doubt it), but had a couple urgent things to get done.   Now that they are done, I think I'm only going to work another 1-2 hours and take sick hours for the rest of it.

  • Unfortunately, there's a dearth of therapists in this city and always has been.  If I wouldn't be so picky, it wouldn't be such an issue.  A large majority of the therapists here have their degrees/credentials in Christian Counseling and it's a major part of their practice.  I have no interest in going to any of them.  Then, you add a queer identity on top of that.  So, now we're more narrowed down to people that I find safe and acceptable to see.

I'm also seeing someone I've seen before, b/c I really liked him.  He asked how we matched up and I told him my requirements re: religion.  He kind of chuckled and said, "Yes well, that would make you end up with me here."  Then he went on to tell me that he had been in seminary and would've gone through but he met his wife, so that he was religious.  I asked if his religion had anything to do with his education or practice or if he was going to tell me to read the Bible as an exercise, and he said most definitely not, so I was fine with it.  But even that last time, I think I had to wait a month to get in to see him.  There's just not enough in accessible places for the city.  Plus this clinic is the one that my insurance will pay for too, so it's a more appealing provider than someplace else might be.  I decided I was willing to wait, but if things get worse, I'll seek out another therapist that I did like her resume, but she didn't take my insurance.
  • @VarunaTT if you went with the therapist that doesn't take your insurance, do you know if she would charge based on a sliding scale? At least then you could get some financial relief if she's able to get you in sooner.
  • @VarunaTT congrats to K on a wonderful achievement!
  • I’m so frustrated on your behalf @short+sassy and @VarunaTT on how your companies are handling covid now. We’re still home but I went in to the office to pick up things I had left in my office (mainly my snacks). When I went in there is sanitizer at the door, there are marks on the floor where you wait to get in the elevator. Security is making sure only 4 people to an elevator, the elevator has its own santizer, and there was a guy whose job it was to sanitize the elevator whenever someone was in it. Then on our floor there is sanitizer everywhere and there are arrows on the floor where you’re supposed to walk. And no one is even working in the office. Just really felt like they were taking steps to ensure we’re safe.

We likely won’t be back in the office until early 2021 from what we’re hearing. We’re home at least until Labor Day but that’s the earliest they’re making any announcement.

And like, we’re a bank. Our whole purpose is making money and we still have figured out how to keep people home and safe.
