Wedding Woes

Monday, Monday

Weekend was good but exhausting. It’s officially cold here and I finally found the winter hats and gloves and coats.

H started his new job today. He has to go in person at least today and tomorrow but will be hybrid after that. I’m so happy for him. Also nervous because this is the biggest exposure risk we’ve had all year.

How’s everyone doing?

  • Weekend went too fast.

Ran a bunch of errands. Cleaned, did laundry, did some online shipping for Xmas presents. That's about it.

    Morning!

I'm tired.  I ended up having an impromptu 3 hour, late-night Facetime Call with my longest friend.  It was chicken soup for the soul, so to speak.

Not much on the agenda today, we have marriage counseling soon, I'm going to finish my postcards to voters in Georgia, send my resume to a friend, and maybe attempt the outdoor lights.  H won't tell me where they are, so I believe they're in a big tangled ball ala National Lampoons Christmas style.

Good luck to your H!  My H's work is (for obvious reasons) a huge red zone for COVID, the nerves don't go away from that so I'm hopeful the hybrid model works for you guys.

I expect this week to be crazy here (again, still...I don't even know how to classify Michigan right now).  There were armed protestors outside of the Secretary of State's house over the weekend, a coworker of H is receiving threats of lynching, and Giuliani brought COVID to a bunch of hoaxers who won't quarantine.  Good times.
I have a lot of anxiety around him being in a building with other people but thankfully they seem to have good protocols in place.

Michigan is just crazy these days. It’s never, ever, a good sign when your state legislature is the central skit on SNL.
  • Good weekend here too. MIL and niece are staying with us this week. MIL is supposed to be taking care of niece, but she's a handful. So we're pitching in but also trying to work like normal. We did have a semi-productive weekend. We put up the tree, found all the other stuff and made a list of other decorations that we want to get. It's crazy how much doesn't translate from one house to the next. Unfortunately, home depot and target were a bust for lights, so I had to order them. Hopefully they'll get here in time to put up one night this week. Otherwise, we hung out by the fire and I made soup.

I'm trying to come up with gift ideas for my family. My dad is a huge pain to shop for, but I'm pretty much stuck on everyone. I want to just convince everyone to buy a goat.
  • Weekend went too fast.  Saturday morning we met my brother and an electrician at the new how for some projects.  Brother pulled the toilet out in the Master bath and installed a new cable outlet in the living room.  Electrician connected the fan for our radon mitigation system and re-did a couple of GFCI outlets.  The painter starts tonight and we'll need to go over sometime this week, put in the new toilet in master and remove the old one in the hall bathroom so he can paint there.  Ran to Walmart for groceries and other stuff Saturday late afternoon.

I feel like I'm so behind on packing at the apartment.  I did get through our dressers and the movers will just wrap those in plastic and no need to empty drawers.  Mom is coming this weekend and we'll knock out as much of kitchen as we can along with linen closet and hall closet.  I have off starting Dec 21st. so that'll be good.  It's hard keeping up with the usual laundry and cleaning and packing.  Will be well worth it.  Just wish it were already Jan 1 and we were moved.  A girl can dream!

  • Good Morning!

Weekend went well.   Saturday was an inside day and was GROSS.   We're on the coast and it started off in the 40's and raining.   By late afternoon that rain turned into big non-sticking snowflakes and that tapered off by my bedtime with winds.  We watched Christmas Chronicles 2 which was a very cute family Christmas movie that even held the attention of my 6 yo.

Sunday we got up and got our tree.   The farm we went to for the past few years was out of trees over  6' by 11/29 so we went to a different one a bit closer that had a HUGE selection.  We found one quickly and it's the biggest one we've ever had.  This year we decided to go with a fuller tree because we know we weren't going to have the crowd this year that we had in the past.     It's lovely and now has Chiquito's Christmas train under it too.

I have so much more shopping to do but things are progressing nicely.  We need to buy bikes for the kids and hide them and need to get things for other family members.  The one good thing about not having the crowd is that I won't have to worry about as many gifts for the guests who aren't going to be here.

  • Michigan is...ugh.
The Mr. is out right now working with 'the public'. My place has very (VERY) limited people and hours but, I'll be out there this week.  And I still deal with small children who snot on things (said with lots of love toward kids. Including mine. WHo snot on things. It's developmentally appropriate to snot on things.  But it still means there is SNOT on things I touch)
Which means we're ot seeing people (like either set of parents) at all--we may be doing a masked/no eating christmas.  Which is going over like a lead balloon, but they're all grudgingly accepting it becaus otherwise they don't see us at all.

We're christmas-ing hard around here though. Because it seems like a good thing to throw myeself into.  I need to go to the store today because 4 types of cookies in, I'm out of flour. I'm almost done shopping

Giving myself a gold star... we're having struggles w/ getting th ekid outside of her own self right now--blame autism and lack of good therapy right now and holy needs-socilization-batman.
I made a 'kindness calendar' for her, where she opens an advent card every day and gets an 'assignment'--and she's actually been super into it.  This weekend she made a christmas card for someone in the armed services, today she wrote a nice note for her dad, Friday she gave soeone a compliment--they're small things, but, we need it.

  • Hugs @mrsconn23, @VarunaTT and @mrsmitten.
@charlotte989875, I hope your DH's first day goes well.

  • @VarunaTT & @mrsmitten hugs :( rough weekends

We did baking Saturday. I got in a snit with my mum after because M said "oh ARE we going to my parents?" he didn't know my mum was staying and we were icing cookies after BK woke up. So she didn't let me explain we had plans to ice the cookies, and assumed we had plans so she left.

She took it horribly, and it took over 24hrs to have her understand it was a poor reaction and that if she had waited just a couple of moments, I would have said to M that we had planned on finish cookies when BK woke up.

So she now understands, and I've asked her she needs to understand that if I had other plans then that's one thing. M didn't know our plan, so he really didn't ask to get her to leave.

Anyways .... it's figured out. Ish.

BK had muffin level-up today. Went well :) She's on 1/8th of muffin.
    Next month is 1/4th and then possible in February we could do a home made hummus {to control the tahini amount}
That part definitely freaks me out more than it should BUT I get it's just because hummus is what caused this reaction to begin with. M explained it's a controlled amount so it's not unknown amount from store also.

    Fuck. Still freaks me out.
  • Weekend was good. Got the house cleaned on Saturday. Headed to Chicago yesterday. The boys were so excited to see me! I have to laugh though because I always go to bed super early when I'm here. Nothing like 2 2.5 year olds to wear a Nana out lol! DD is working today so I'm basically in charge. SIL is taking them on a walk right now (he does that every day) so I was able to get a Pelaton work out done. They should be back any minute.

Good luck to your H on his first day @charlotte989875. Good vibes to your H so that he'll stay safe @mrsmitten.

Hugs @VarunaTT , good luck @charlotte989875 as you adjust to the new schedule, stay safe @mrsmitten and ouch, good luck with work @levioosa
Finally figured out Christmas lights, my kids have been desperate for the outside of the house to match the festivity level of the inside and H just doesn’t do anything extra, but this year I finally figured it out. The answer was solar powered lights, and the kids went nuts. That was this weekend’s victory.
I so want to do solar powered lights, but I've been having bad luck with them!  My house is old, and I don't have any outdoor outlets at the front of the house, so plug in lights are not an option.  May I ask if you found good solar lights and where you got them?  I bought a strand off amazon earlier this year for the summer, and they stopped working after a month.

  • I got a migraine this weekend and sleep a lot.  I think it is gone now ... I still feel it a bit, thinking about re-emerging.  Still got the house cleaned though and figured out some retirement savings stuff for next year.  I did not go cross country skiing though - the snow melted a bit and is now crunchy and icy.  Since I'm learning, I figured I would be falling A LOT, so hard snow doesn't seem much fun.  Hopefully we get some soft snow this week so I can go out this weekend.

  • @kerbohl Target!  I don’t have outdoor outlets either.  I bought these last year a couple days after Christmas for $10/box.  I bought five boxes but am going to try to buy five more this year (after Christmas again).  They’re really pretty.

    Solar lights..yes!  Love it!
sorry it was a rough weekend @VarunaTT. @charlotte989875 GL to the hubs! @mrsconn23, I can only imagine what you and your sister are going through.  I’m not going to a scroll up lol but was it @levioosa that decorated those cookies? love your baking idea. I need things for M and I to do, becauae he bores easily.  In fact, he left early on Saturday because he “just wanted to go home”.... so maybe I can buy a gingerbread house to decorate or something...if we’re even still together? Things got weird between us after he left early. I was hurt that he didnt spend the night (it was in the plans).

in other news I downloaded the “betterme”
fitness/fasting/food logger app and I like it! But I won’t use the food logger part. I get frustrated with that easily. But I think you double pay for it.  One to use the app and one for the “coach” part of it.

  • Bummer @CharmedPam I hope everything works out (if you want it to!)
  • @charlotte989875, good luck on your H's first day!  FWIW, I've been back working in an office f/t for months (since mid-May) and we haven't had a COVID outbreak in that entire time.  Myself and almost all my coworkers wear masks in common areas or if we are going to someone else's desk/office.  Sure, it isn't as safe as WFH, but if there are similar practices/procedures in place at his new workplace it should (hopefully) be fairly safe.

@VarunaTT, I'm glad you did some cooking and had some friends over for game night.  Those are some great steps into your new normal.

I had three showings on Friday and everyone cancelled at the last minute.  Typical, smh.  One of them I moved to Sat. and she was a no show...and this time...not even a contact.  The usual smatterings of other no-shows, but I did have two potential tenants come and both turned in an application!  I'm calling on references and all that stuff today.  Plus, another person I talked to wanted a showing on Sunday.  When I offered her Monday instead, she asked if it was okay to go by anyway and look through the windows.  I told her that was fine (it's vacant) and I could e-mail her an application if she is interested.  She requested an application this morning!

I finally got my appraisals back on Friday.  They came in about where I expected them to be ($160K per duplex), so that was nice.  Even just a touch higher.  The After Repair value (ARV) for the appraisal I got last year was $145K per duplex.  Which I thought was too low and my real estate agent set the ARV comps in the low $150K's.  The loan I'm paying off is only around $200K anyway (total for both duplexes).  I am doing a rate/term refinance, which means I'm just paying off the loan.

I crunched my numbers again to possibly do a cash-out refi...which means taking a higher loan to get some of my equity out in cash...but decided against it because it comes with a higher interest rate and I could only get $25K-$40K back out anyway.  Because this is post-2008 and banks no longer let people do crazy stuff, like pulling 100% of their equity back out, lol. We are now looking at a Dec. 18th closing date (crossing fingers!).  I cannot even tell you how much more relaxed my holidays will be if my short-term "about to expire" rehab loan is done and paid off the week before the holidays.

  • Whoa!  There might be some major upheavals going on at the company I work for, though nothing that directly affects me.

They did a major change to their retirement policy and sent an e-mail about it last week.  For people who were at least 58 and had worked here for 20 years, they could retire and stay on the company health plan until they were eligible for Medicare.  But the company is shutting that off on Dec. 31st.  For people already retired, it won't change for them, they'll be grandfathered.  But people retiring in 2021 or later can't stay on the health plan.

Can you guess where this is going, lol?  Major upsurge in people retiring this month!!!  I have one coworker where our jobs sometimes intersect.  She was planning to stay working for another 1-2 years, but now she will be retiring at the end of the month because of this new policy.  She's been here forever and knows where just about everything on the network and in the office is located.  She is one of those people who is always happy to help and point you in the right direction.  I am really going to miss her!  She spoke to the Big Boss about coming back as a contractor, but she said he didn't seem interested.  Meh.

Another person (JD) who might fall into this category is the only Database Administrator the company has.  That is the kind of work my perpetually unemployed H does.  He's not lazy about working, but he's lazy about looking for a job.  At any rate, I'm going to keep my ear out if this person is leaving.  I'm hoping for an opportunity for my H to slide in and get a job.  The original plan JD has was to work 1-2 more years, then retire, and move to TX where his daughter/grandkids are.  I assume he will definitely be retiring this month also, all things considered, but I'm also pretty sure the company would offer him a contract position.

  • Hugs to those having a rough time!

Virtual date @Jen4948 how did that go?

@short+sassy  for professional curiosity, are they making the retirees pay the total cost of coverage (like they would on COBRA) or are they subsidizing it so they pay similar to what they would if they were still working?

SSDD here. Been busy with work, more busy than I normally am in December. Decided to do some crafting so I've been using my Silhouette (like a Cricut) to decorate some masks for neighbors and friends.

Some people in my area made a driving map of all of the houses with light displays set to music so it was nonstop here all weekend with cars. Kind of fun to look out and see people watching. A friend texted and said hey I'm outside your house - she didn't realize it until she put the address in her gps and my name came up from her contacts so that was fun to go out and say hi.

@short+sassy is this mandated at a corporate level but is there tribal knowledge that may be lost?

That seems to be one of the concerns where DH works and I'm curious if this is going to mean lots of WTFery come early 2021 when people are retired and suddenly management is looking to see how to get the job done.

Oh no!  We don't have Target in Canada anymore!  But maybe, now that I know what they are called, I can find that brand around here at a different store.  Maybe Amazon?

  • @kvruns, I'm not sure if the company still pays the majority of the coverage (like they do for employees) or if it is more like COBRA.

@banana468, the company only has roughly 400 people with half in Houston and half in NOLA.  So everything is from a corporate level, lol.  Depending on how many people leave, I'd think there is going to be a lot of knowledge that is lost.  Because it isn't just losing employees to retirement in a larger than average number.  It's losing employees who literally have at least 20+ years experience working in their jobs, with this company specifically.

With that said, it's also not unusual for them to have long-tern contractors working here.  I would think some of the potentially retiring people would be offered that opportunity, like the DB Admin I mentioned.  But then, making more presumptions, if a retiring employee wanted to come back as an IC, I assume they'd demand more money.  And should.  The company must know that.  But knowing and ponying up the money needed to potentially keep crucial people are two entirely different things, lol.  Plus, for most of us, our hours are billed back to a client and it's a good educated guess that those bill rates won't support a big jump in pay.
