First Tuesday of the year

Re: First Tuesday of the year

  • We’re heading into our super busy time of the year, so it’s sort of the calm before the storm. Everything kicks off Friday so we’re in prep mode.

H has to start going into the office a few times a week and I’m decidedly not excited about it. I get the explanations for why, and that there are safety protocols in place but I’m still not a fan. Technically he’s an essential employee (I mean I guess technically I am, too) but it’s not like he’s needed for anything there, he works in corporate.

Really hoping you’re negative @varunatt and you stay safe.

I hope you feel better and stay safe! @VarunaTT

I’m back at work today and I’m already over it. This weekend was mostly nice. FSIL A and her FI ended up coming over for New Year’s. We had a decent time. Yesterday we found out one of FI’s closest friends is on a vent and now receiving dialysis. He’s only 36. His whole family is in the hospital and on vents. It’s so sad. We also found out that another friend had just been discharged from the hospital after being on a vent as well. Both people work with FI and I want to strangle the CEO. This is why people should WFH. There’s no reason to have them come into the office.
Good luck to your FI's friend and that person's family.

Maybe it is just my imagination, but I feel like I'm hearing more stories than usual about "outbreaks" that happen from a work location.  I have a friend who works at a place where people are tested 3x/week and follow all kinds of protocols.  But, despite that, one person had a positive test.  And, although it was identified quickly because of all the testing they do, there were 30+ more people who tested positive shortly after him.  The workplace shut down after the (I think) 5th positive came in.

It's been mulling over a lot in my mind and causing me concern.  I try not to compare.  But I do anyway.  There are major differences in her workplace as compared to mine.  It's definitely riskier, which is why they test everyone so often.  But they all wear masks too, so it is a stark reminder that while masks help a lot, they certainly aren't foolproof.
I was so nervous about coming back to the office in May.  But everyone is good about wearing masks in common areas and there hasn't been an "outbreak" here over all these months, so I've felt "safe".  But am I?  Is that just a false sense of security?  Should I take greater precautions, even if they add more hassle to my life?  For example, I could take a lesser used entrance.  I could start bringing lunch that doesn't need to be refrigerated, in order to avoid trips to the break room.  I dunno (sigh).  I think I will do that for at least the next 10 days to at least get two weeks past the NYE holiday weekend.

On other COVID news, Louisiana's governor (John Bel Edwards) recently tested positive.  They also started vaccinations this week for people who are at least 70.  It feels like they already "skipped" groups who were supposed to get first priority.  Healthcare workers/first responders/nursing homes were first and did start a couple weeks ago.  But the key word is "start".  That first group isn't even close to being done, so why are they already allowing the 70+ group (not in a nursing home) to get some of the precious few vaccines?  I've been following it a bit on my local Nextdoor and, even for people 70+, it's bleak to get a vaccination appointment and takes a lot of luck and perseverance.

  • V, I hope you don't have the Vid. It sounds like you are on top of things and doing what you can do to feel better. Feel better soon.
