Friday Eve

Re: Friday Eve

  • I agree that teachers should be considered essential workers, but H just confirmed that the only group that is getting the vaccine is 70+ and healthcare workers. The thought behind that is to lessen the stress on hospitals and healthcare workers since the above 70 group is hospitalized at a higher rate than any other group (at least in Indiana).
  • This is interesting and completely frustrating that the answer is "it's up to the states".  I'm glad I don't live in Florida where the answer is "May the odds be ever in your favor".

Thus far I've seen those working in medical fields with patients getting it.  Now we're in phase 1b which appears to be educators and those over 75.    My parents don't qualify but are in the 1b - soon group.

DH and I are in the "hey maybe this summer".  It would be really nice if we could start to see improvement on that but I also recognize that I think our state is handling it in an appropriate manner.

Same in Louisiana, except 65+.  At this time, health conditions are not considered at all.  Doesn't matter how at risk someone is.

I get it.  They need to draw lines somewhere or it gets even more complicated.  But it's just a bummer that someone who is a healthy 65 would be entitled to a vaccine before someone who is 63 and undergoing chemo or dialysis or has asthma, etc.

Health conditions will be the next group and I'll be in that one.  But that will be a big group opening up.  And, as we've now been finding out...at least in my area...just because a person is eligible, doesn't mean they can get an appointment for a vaccine.  So far, there have been nowhere near enough for the people who are currently eligible.

    I wasn't clear.

There are tiers to the rollout in MO (not sure in other states).  The healthcare workers and the nursing homes are the 1st tier and that's absolutely fine.  I am in a tier above teachers, b/c of "health conditions". So if a teacher has the proper "health conditions" they can get a vaccine, but a teacher w/out those conditions wouldn't.  That's what I think is BS.  I think teachers should be the tier with other second tier "essential" employees.
  • @VarunaTT yeah, I think the next tier after 70+ is 65 and with health risks, then 60. There is talk about adding teachers to essential workers (of course if they have health risks the would be in that group). From what I've heard there haven't been major problems getting the vaccination. When they first announced the age drop to 70 (as opposed to 80) there was a rush on the reservation system but by later that day it was running smoothly and everyone I know got appointments within a few days. I think that is pretty reasonable considering the number of people getting vaccinated.

Totally agree. I was actually really surprised to see how many states have already started widespread vaccines. We're still in 1A, which is pretty limited with no communication about when we'll be able to even move to 1B. Because my state is run by a bunch of hillbillies who don't believe in science.
  • There are problems in MO, unfortunately b/c our governor is an asshole.  We dropped to 40th in "efficiency in delivering vaccine".

I had a good friend who does some sort of thing for United Health Care (he explains it and it's really complicated, but basically he writes the robots that handle everything a health insurance company needs for claims).  He just told me that his work on covid is showing that 40% of healthcare professionals in the state don't believe the vaccine will work.  We both just shook our heads.
