I have to find a new doctor. Mine told me yesterday that covid vaccines are "experimental" and it's "inadvisable" for anyone under about 70 to get vaccinated because of the effects on pregnant women (even though I can't get pregnant).  :s
Oh Jesus. And yup, I'd try to report this doctor too!

Having Pfizer almost in our backyard, the information I have on their vaccine development is that the vaccine was developed in the normal amount of time.  It was released quickly because trial phases were conducted at the same time rather than in phases.  @levioosa may chime in if she has any additional insight and my understanding is that they progressed to phase 3 trials at the same time as phase 1 and 2 knowing that if all 3 passed, they could advise it was ready to go to market.  Normal vaccine processes have the trials in sequence and consequently take longer.   It does not mean that there is anything substandard about the vaccine.
That makes a lot of sense!  And thanks also to @MyNameIsNot, for talking about funding issues drugs often have that these COVID vaccines didn't.

Although a totally different industry, I have an analogy for that.  I worked for a couple years on a project to build a massive flood wall in NOLA.  It was the largest "build-design" project the Army Corps of Engineers had ever done.

Normally, a project of that size would have taken about 15 years from start to finish.  But, after the devastation from Katrina flooding, that was deemed way too long.  They wanted a 3-year timeline.  One of the ways they shortened that time dramatically was to start "building" it, within 6-12 months of the design starting.  Usually, the entire design would have been completed and various scenarios would have been considered, before construction started.  They did meet the 3-year timeline.  But faster also came with a higher price tag.

  • Thanks everyone. I don't know about reporting the doctor, but finding a new, reputable one seems in order.
  • I'm here, but just for a quick read.  Its super busy at work today and I have all of the stuff for DDs birthday today.  She loved the giant sign that was put up in the yard!  How do I have a 4 year old???

MrsConn - I'm sorry for your loss.
  • H got his first vaccine yesterday. Indiana dropped the age to 60 yesterday, but I still don't qualify until April. By that point the age probably will have been dropped to 55 so I'll qualify before I turn 60. All of y'all who are getting the vaccine are your states dropping age requirements faster or are they opening up other worker groups? Just curious.

    Sorry for your loss @mrsconn23.

I'm headed back up to Chicago tomorrow. DD had a bit of a scare yesterday. She and the baby are ok but she asked if I could come up for the weekend. I was ready to go up yesterday but she said it wasn't necessary because the nanny was there. DS1 had a job interview on Friday. He is very hopeful about it so good vibes would be appreciated.
I have an underlying condition (asthma) that NYS identified as a comorbidity with covid so I now qualify regardless of age.

I hope everything is okay with your DD! How many weeks is she now?
  • @mrsconn23, my deepest condolences for your loss. <<<hugs, prayers>>>

She's 32 weeks so he needs to stay in there a bit longer. She had her regular OB appointment today and the doctor said he thinks there was a little placental tear. He is scheduling an ultrasound but said they usually resolve on their own without problem. He was glad to know I was coming up to lend a hand.

Indiana hasn't identified co-morbidities yet - they are in the next group. The majority of deaths/hospitalizations have occurred in the 60 and above age group so our governor decided to concentrate on getting that population vaccinated first. He has received a lot of push back on that but it seems to have worked so far. Also, the state has done a good job of vaccine distribution. I know some people have had to wait a few weeks but in the grand scheme of things that isn't awful considering how many people need to be vaccinated. Also the storms last week threw a wrench into vaccinations everywhere!
  • Here is an article about revamping the credit.  Possibly getting rid of the three credit bureaus and replacing it with a public credit agency under the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.  Though there are HUGE holes in the article that aren't addressed.  Namely, the three main credit bureaus are corporations and their reports are largely purchased by corporations.  So I don't know where all this "authority" would come from to tell businesses where they have to buy data from.  Please ignore the Yahoo title.  It's their usual sensationalized and not very accurate title.

BUT, it's nice to at least hear it being talked about because it's mind boggling to me that something as important as someone's credit score is attached to such a total S**T SHOW of an industry.  It's bad.  It's really bad.  Credit reports are rife with mistakes, but it is difficult for the average person to fix the problems because lenders are the bureau's customers, not them.  There is no clarity in how scores are calculated because they purposely keep it a big secret.  Even with the same bureau, you can have multiple scores depending on which "type" of report a lender is buying.  Yet you hardly ever hear these problems being talked about.  And it's also part of the big macroeconomic systems that have deepened inequality for POC and women.

They do have these listed although not yet eligible in case you haven't seen this yet https://www.coronavirus.in.gov/files/Eligibility 1.5.21.pdf:
Those at high risk: • Active dialysis patients – Eligibility date to be determined • Sickle cell disease patients – Eligibility date to be determined • Down syndrome – Eligibility date to be determined • Post-solid organ transplant – Eligibility date to be determined • People who are actively in treatment (chemotherapy, radiation, surgery) for cancer now or in the last three months, or with active primary lung cancer or active hematologic cancers (lymphoma, leukemia and multiple myeloma) – Eligibility date to be determined

The CDC's list of high risk conditions is much longer. I swear IN first had the same list as the CDC on its roll out plan and then changed it but I don't have any confirmation, could just be my imagination
  • @Jen4948 I would report that provider.

@mrsconn23 I’m so sorry for your loss.

Everyone is correct about the vaccine trial. It’s also incredible what can be accomplished when you throw billions of dollars at research and have the combined greatest minds in the field all working together. The MRNA vaccines were existing technology, we just didn’t hear about them.

Yes, isn't that interesting.  And it makes me sad to think of all the other cures our world could have if the pharmaceutical companies actually wanted to do that.  But they don't.  It's far more profitable to come up with better and more expensive ways to TREAT conditions then to actually cure them.

But I don't know what a better answer is  Research costs money so it is tied to making money.

Exactly.  They would have to go back to square one with any of those vaccines if phase 2 or 3 failed.         It's rare that any company would move to do something in that direction especially when a clinical trial involves people.
