Cinco de Mayo on WEDNESDAY

Good morning. I know Cinco de Mayo is an American not a real holiday. But I think there are usually some deals at restaurants

Re: Cinco de Mayo on WEDNESDAY

  • It's been a day already and it's not even 8am central.  VPN stopped working last night in the middle of a project with a tight deadline this morning.  IT couldn't fix.  Came in super early this morning and my whole account was locked out.  Just redid like 3 hours of work in about 45 minutes (at least it goes quicker the 2nd time?!).  Then noticed my boss made a bunch of changes in the document that didn't match with some other things and it was a cluster.

    THEN i got a phone call that a kiddo in G's classroom tested positive for COVID so he is now home with us likely for 2 weeks.  H has a huge presentation tomorrow to prep for and this is my busiest week of the quarter.  Not that it's ever good for anyone to get COVID but yikes this week is just the worst timing.  We're going to get him tested again poor thing (even though my recent test was negative) since he's been stuffy and sniffly since last weekend - no fever though.  UGH i'm ready for this pandemic crap to be done!!!!
  • Damn @Casadena that is a whole day before 8am.

    My H and I went for Mexican food yesterday for a Taco Tuesday special, 4 tacos for $4.  It was a restaurant we had not been to before and it was delicious!  My H had chicken fajitas which were both great and one of the best prices I've seen ($16).

    They have other days with great specials and I am excited to go back.  On Wednesdays, it is all you can eat tacos and all you can drink margaritas for $24.  On Sundays, they have a brunch buffet for only $16 and you can add bottomless mimosas for another $10.  Two of the things on their brunch menu were chorizo frittatas and "avocado toast", but with tortillas instead of bread.

    As such, we probably aren't doing anything for Cinco de Mayo.  Which is just as well.  It started pouring rain last night and will be horrible weather all day.  My dog Izzy was afraid, so I didn't get a very good night's sleep because I kept giving her snuggles.  But now I am super tired!  At least tomorrow and through the weekend, it's supposed to be sunny and great.

    Edited to add:  @Casadena, that is a horrible start to the day!  I hope it goes smoother from here.  Good luck to G.  Hopefully his test comes back negative.  But that is awful timing he needs to stay home this week, while you and your H are so extra busy.

  • @Casadena That sounds like just about the worst morning. Fingers crossed your kiddo doesn't have covid and that you can catch your breath here by the weekend.

    @mrsconn23 I legit felt like I had the flu after my second Moderna shot. I had a low grade fever, chills, body ache, and no appetite for about 48 hours after my shot. Two days later I woke up feeling absolutely fine.

    Another day of crappy weather. WFH today, which is terrible for my motivation. We do 3 days in office, 2 days at home (W/F) but I think I'm going to start going into the office on Wednesdays to keep me accountable.

    Same! I’m so looking forward to the day when I can go drink bottomless mimosas and not worry about covid.

    But let’s be real I’d have like 2 and be exhausted.
  • It’s cold and rainy here. I want to take a nap and oddly have no meetings before 11:30, but I really should use this time to knock out some work.

    We ate dinner out on our deck last night because the weather was so nice. Baby M though it was the greatest thing ever. Also clean up is way easier! Can’t wait until the weather is consistently nice and we can do it more often.
  • I'm starting to look at Fathers day gifts.
    We made an agreement that mothers day/fathers day isn't going to be an "oh let's give fancy gifts!" kinda deal. More lowkey and as if BK gave it to us.
    {side note - we did this because mothers day in May, fathers day in June, M's bday in July, our anniversary in August and my bday in September}

    I'm currently hunting to see if I can find a matching shirt for M & BK, because I found a shirt for BK in Ghostbuster logo. Plus I'm getting M a BBQ cleaner. Not a bristle one - it's a neat wood one that as you use it, it burns the rails into it.
  • Same! I’m so looking forward to the day when I can go drink bottomless mimosas and not worry about covid.

    But let’s be real I’d have like 2 and be exhausted.
    For real.  After being pregnant/nursing for 2 years straight now, I have no tolerance whatsoever.

    Glad it wasnt the bad @mrsconn23.  My coworker described it the best way.  A headache and achey muscles. Almost like you were feeling you were ABOUT to get the flu, but it never happened.  That’s how mine felt.  It was nothing from what I heard.

    So I did a bad review on the place I used for plumbing and also gave me the “free” tuneups. It was short, sarcastic but made people aware they were going to rob you.  As it turns out, many many others said they were ripped off too. So it’s not just me!

    M is getting his #2 today, Pfzier, so we’ll figure out if we’re getting together (hopefully for Mexican food) tonight all on how he feels. I’m sure I’ll have mexican food for lunch here at work anyway.

  • So .... I'm making decisions here.

    I get my tax return basically tomorrow {direct deposit}

    I'm debating on putting what's basically 60% towards my student loan - which would drop it by 60% also.
    Then I could manage to get the rest down in about 6-ish months.

    Downside - I'd only have a small towards savings.
    Upside - student loan gone. And what I was paying towards that, could go to something else {unfortunately not savings yet - I have other things to pay off}

    Thoughts?

    Also - would you put the typical student loan payment towards the higher debt, or lower debt?

    @Misskittydanger I personally would throw any extra cash I had at getting rid of the highest interest rate debt i had (other than a mortgage - which probably isn't your highest anyway).  Why wouldn't you want to be student debt free in 6ish months?!  That seems like a huge burden off your shoulders.

    I would divide it up- depending on a few things. Do you have a healthy savings, or are you not putting much in there monthly?

    If you’re set on putting it all toward debt (and not in savings- although I would definitely consider savings if you don’t have 3-6 months of expenses put away) do you have any with higher interest rates or finance charges? I would tackle those first. Because you’re paying more each month to keep carrying that debt.
  • I agree with previous PP’s.  I think all the financial advisors say pay down the highest interest rates first.

  • Ugh, I just got into a frustrated quarrel with a client.  I'm usually really great at handling situations, but this client just pushes too danged hard every time.  Let me do my job, please.  If you actually knew how to do my job, you wouldn't have had to hire us.  Not only that, but I really don't give a damn what a 3rd party does or doesn't like about what we need to do for our jobs.  It's not often I lose my patience with a client, so I don't usually get in trouble for it, but I also don't particularly like feeling that way either.

    I've been sleepy all week.  I think it's because I'm finally getting decent sleep and that bank has been overdrawn for awhile.  No big news really, just trying to work hard and relax at home.
  • That sucks @levioosa, didn’t he just have his appendix out?
  • So they're all around same interest rate. Student loan is just the one I've had longest, so I wanna get rid of that. {like since '07 for reference}

    What I don't put towards student loan, would be into savings. I've hit savings a bit recently, so I even a small amount would be great.

    That’s a rough start to the day @Casadena
    Sounds amazing @short+sassy
    Hugs @levioosa
    AP exams this week and next so the testing hallway is blocked off to students but faculty are allowed to pass through..how small is my life that it’s making me feel like a VIP, lol.

    My cinco de mayo pet peeve is when Trumpers wear sombreros and go big celebrating.  As someone who’s never chanted about building walls, however, I’m looking forward to the enchiladas I have ready to go for later- half topped with salsa verde and half queso blanco.  Everything is made but the cheese sauce which can’t really be made in advance.

    Edit bc TK posted this before I was finished

    I agree with all of this.

    I assume your student loan has a fairly low interest rate.  Especially if some of the other debt you mention is credit card debt.

    Dave Ramsey's "snowball" method for paying off debt is pretty wise.  If you haven't already heard of it, here is the gist of how it works (I'm making up numbers):

    --Student loan - 7% interest - min. payment $100 -- balance $5,000
    --'CC 1 -- 20% interest - min. payment $50 -- balance $3,000
    --'CC 2 -- 15% interest - min. payment $30 -- balance $2,000

    You have $200/month extra to put toward debt (after already meeting minimum payments).

    1.  Make minimum payments on student loan and 'cc 2.  Put extra money toward 'cc1 debt because it has the highest interest rate, ie $250/month toward paying this 'cc down.

    2.  Once 'cc1 is paid off, do the same thing for 'cc 2.  Now you have $280/month to pay it down.

    Rinse and repeat until your debt is paid off.

    But don't put paying down debt faster, ahead of having a healthy savings and contributing to a retirement plan.  Money has a huge time value, especially if you are talking about decades.  $100 put into a retirement plan today for someone who is 30, will have 35 years to exponentially increase.  The longer people wait to start, the harder it is because they have lost that value of time.

    Though you also don't want decades of paying 15-20% on perpetual credit card debt, lol.  That's when time works against you.

    The biggest takeaway is people should be mindful of their spending and their budget.  Income consistently outpacing spending, even if it isn't by a lot at first, can move mountains.

  • @short+sassy I considered the snowball effect. All my loans are basically same rate {I got lucky a.f}

    But my debts are {approx amounts}
    Loan 1 - $3,000
    Loan 2 - $9,000
  • Oh no @levioosa.  I'm sorry to hear that.

    I think it depends a lot on your savings/ retirement as well. If you’re comfortable with what’s going in to savings and retirement, and your interest rates are the same. Can you pay off loan 1 with your tax refund? If so do that then apply the monthly payment you were allocating to loan 1 to loan 2.

    If you’re not maxing out retirement and/or you don’t have a strong savings with a sufficient reserve; I’d pay off the small loan then split the payment from loan 1 to loan 2 and retirement/saving. Probably with more going into savings/retirement.

    I posted before I saw your post that your debts are about the same interest rate and you're keeping up with savings.

    Keep up the good work!  It's always so satisfying to get a chunk of money and knock out more debt and/or bulk up savings.

  • My days are still crazy. It's quarter after 11 and I just finally had a chance to eat my breakfast. I just need to say how grateful I am that I'm doing this while WFH. I can't even imagine how much worse this would be if I had to commute and had to run from conference room to conference room for my steady diet of back to back meetings.

    Nothing much else going on.  H and I are supposed to go to visit his sister this weekend (she lives at the beach.) MIL decided to go also. For some reason she decided to fly here and ride with us on the 5 hour road trip, rather than just fly to SIL's town. Traveling with MIL is a nightmare, and she constantly fights with SIL. H and I had a conversation last night about the reality that I'll still need to work quite a bit there, and how would he feel if I begged off. I'm surprised, but he was really supportive of me staying behind. I'm still on the fence, leaning toward staying here, but FOMO.

    @Casadena ugh, what a morning.

    @short+sassy Um, I think it’s very rude that the restaurant you went to isn’t in CA.

    Back and work and still training today. My head is not here. FI got some rough health news last night that we’re still processing. It does affect me so I’m trying to be logical about next steps we need to take while being sensitive to him. He’s kind of a wreck right now. Ugh. Poor FI. This has not been his year.

    I had a massage yesterday but my person is no longer with the salon so it was someone new. She was okay, but sadly I’m really sore today. I’m trying to reserve judgment as it’s the first massage I’ve had since pandemic but I can’t help but think my old person almost never left me hurting the next day. I have been working out a lot though, and she really got into some knots, so maybe next time will be better.

    Otherwise SSDD. Hike tonight and then tomorrow is Friday Jr.
    I totally understand!  But we have so few good Mexican restaurants here.  Don't take that away from me, lol.

    Good luck to your FI.  I'm sorry to hear he some bad things going on with his health.
