Wedding Woes

Classic: WTF is this question even?

I asked a familiar-looking, elegant woman at the gym if her name was Maria, an old and well-liked acquaintance I had not seen for years. I am a white woman, the person I asked was Hispanic. She replied, “No, my name is Vangie. We all look alike.” I was PO’d, and I want to challenge her regarding all the assumptions she engaged in when making that reply next time I see her. Should I just let it drop?

Re: Classic: WTF is this question even?

  • All Vangie’s look alike? I’ve never met a Vangie so I don’t know….

  • Yes, drop it.
  • You basically want to prove to someone you don’t know and don’t interact with that you didn’t stereotype her when you interrupted her at the gym and mistook her for someone else?

Don’t work your stuff out on Vangie.
  • HUH?

Why didn't you say "Oh you looked just like a friend from HS I lost touch with.  I'm so sorry!"

  • Don't #notallwhitepeople her.  Let it go and maybe next time say, "You remind me of a friend I haven't seen for years" and figure it out from there.
  • LW, seriously.  What exactly do you think that would accomplish?  It will fester more for you and be more upsetting.  It will anger...and probably ALARM Vangie...because your behavior would be so weird and "off", if you confronted her the next time you see her.

The time to say something was in the moment.  Hopefully you did say something normal like, "I only asked because you look a lot like someone I knew many years ago."

To repeat the advice I gave LW Karen.  Some people suck and are rude.  But don't let people like that get to you and drag you down.  Ignore and move on.
