Stormy Tuesday

I'm keeping an eye on the weather and might leave work early.  It's supposed to be massive thunderstorms, with the potential for tornadoes and hail this afternoon.  I was confused about hail potential, because it's not cold.  But I Googled it and apparently, despite hail being ice, it is not considered winter weather and can happen in all temperatures.

I'm doing a little more training this morning.  We have a couple things to finish and I'm really hoping it isn't more than about 2 hours, because I have other fish to fry.

At lunch, I'm going to the bank and will then be using my "Pi Day" app coupon at Blaze Pizza.  It's about a block away from that bank, so it feels like an especially efficient day to use it.  Especially since it expires in about a week.  After I get back to the office, I'm finally posting one of our vacant rentals that is ready.  My H will be there tomorrow for an open house from noon-2PM.  Hopefully the rental demand is still high and we will get a lot of applications.  This is one of the former mini-nursing home units, so we will have three more ready shortly.

For future reference on here, I'm going to call those four units we have near each other the Lizards.  Because they aren't mini-nursing homes anymore and I'm trying to forget that horrible master tenant, lol.  Lizards is a take off on the street name they are located on.  Those are the two duplexes that are next door to each other that we did a massive renovation on a couple of years ago.

Re: Stormy Tuesday

  • Stay safe, stay dry @short+sassy.  Renting is becoming more of a thing here.  From what I’ve heard a few people have already sold their houses and want to rent for a year and then buy when the market is hopefully down.  Even our admin is toying with that idea.  However, I also heard from people doing this - rent is higher than some mortgages right now.  This probably wouldn’t work for me.

My TMJ is acting up.  My dentist said they don’t treat that, but my friends who have it say theirs do.  I may just make an appt for something else and when she sees me “bam! This visit is really for TMJ, but your booking staff says you don’t treat it? But the googles say you do!”  The googles are never wrong.  Never wrong.

  • I'm trying not to complain about the rain, b/c I know other parts of the country are desperate for it.  These fronts that keep coming through are really screwing with my allergies and head though.  I guess I'm just going to keep living with a low pressure headache for the rest of March.

I so appreciate my management company.  One of the reasons I stay here is that they have never raised my rent, not once in 5 years, in either apartment I was in with them.  Most of my other friends get a regular 3%+ increase every year.  I'm pretty sure that the next person after me makes up the difference in cost, as I've seen the apartments around me increase with new tenants (and this once increased from what it was when I first moved in next door).  Technically my rent payment is probably a bit higher than most mortgages in this city, but not by much anymore and the benefits of renting far outweigh the benefits of home ownership for me.  However, I have seen a lot of apartments start getting higher than what I'm paying and I have loads more square footage and benefits than they do.  Part of my reluctance to leave is this beautiful apartment.  I've seriously considered asking if they would sell it to me like a condo style and just living here forever.  It's what I always wanted in my place and just fits me so well.  I totally lucked out and I know it.

I'm waiting on a new journal and some new papercraft models, b/c I'm so freaking bored at home.  Also started a new workout program. I'm trying to take it a little slower right now, b/c every time I do a workout, it seems to just fatigue me so much I end up kind of bottoming out on energy.  Basically just trying to figure out how to stay busy and not bored when living by myself and not having much of a social life right now.
  • I've heard there's a storm in the south but not much else.

    I need opinions.
    So as of summer, I'm likely going to start making BK's lunch when she's home - or some level of it since M is still working and it's just easier {I have to make my own lunch anyways}
Because of this, I need to buy more produce or at least kid lunch options more.
I'm considering 2 grocery stores for shopping.

Our main one - Walmart - is good overall but their produce section SUUCKKKKSSS
I've upped our grocery budget by approx $25 when we're doing BK lunches.
We have a few other stores nearby that I could just do pick up at walmart then in store at another place.

    Pro/Con?
  • Stay safe in the storms! It looks like some of Texas got hit this morning. We get hail a lot in spring/fall storms. It's so weird to be 65 degrees out but have ice on your porch, but it melts in like 5 minutes.

Nothing exciting happening here. We aren't supposed to get storms until overnight, so I'm enjoying 70s and sunny while I can. I'm on a work project that is irritating me. The whole thing has been a cluster from go, but it's starting to feel like they're intentionally screwing things up.
  • I regularly shop more than one grocery store.  Saturday, I had to go three places (all less than half mile from each other) to get everything I needed.  Walmart produce beyond like, bananas/apples/cuties/basic onions, is shit.  It's throwing good money away IMO.

@VarunaTT, the seesaw weather is also kicking my ass.  My sinuses are so angry.  My ear is popping annoyingly all the time.

I've heard schools were delay in TX today and are letting out early in NOLA due to this system.

DefConn and I had dental appts.  They busted out the dreaded orthodontist brochures.  :: sighs in HSA ::

Work is busy and I'm dreading having to call someone because they're going to be no fun and I really don't have any answers for them.

My friend M has gotten the ball rolling with a lawyer.  I have all my crossables crossed for him.  His ex is really being a piece of work and I hope him taking action catches her off guard.

Tuesday, made worse by crap weather, blerg.
  • @mrsconn23 it's fine for now because we make her lunches only on weekends.
I'm glad Walmart produce section being shit has consistency lol
2/3 stores are on my way home from Walmart - only 1 is out of the way when doing groceries but otherwise I could go there
  • Walmart’s produce is suckage for me too.  But I love the ease of the p/u so will do that for non produce.  I’m shameful. SHAMEFUL on eating my veggies:  it usually is just whatever produce comes with homechef’s side.  I love fruit:  i have a local place for that caller Pete’s.  And I always say I’m going to Costco, but forget to.  Another one I forget is aldi.  People just swear by it as a whole. I was not so lucky in the produce aisle with them.

speaking of, someone on my nextdoor app said my walmart was turning into 100% self check out in May. I bet the p/u is doing a bang up business and hopefully moving employees there and not cutting jobs completely.

  • @CharmedPam BK looooves fruit and veggies, so I know that'll be a large part of her lunch until we can figure out with her allergy etc
  • We go to Meijer for produce and smaller quantity items. Costco for other stuff, Kroger for things like specialty cheese and if we just need to pick up one or two things.

Got the upstairs cleaned this morning after working out. I need to do the kitchen now but have zero motivation. I know my allergies would be better if I got everything dusted at least. The renovation is somewhat removed but there is still a feel of dust in the air. I have a stretch appointment this afternoon so want to get stuff done in time to shower and head out.

Stay safe @short+sassy and everyone else in the storm's path.  I'm glad that you feel peace in your home @VarunaTT I shop at a few different markets @MissKittyDanger

Does anyone have any recs for yoga/cotton capris with pockets?  I'm searching but can't find any for less than $30 or so.  Day one with AF and the headache is insane.

  • Our Aldis seem to have good produce, but it has to be used really quickly or it turns.  I've never gotten anything there that was able to last more than a couple of days.  My Neighborhood Walmart always has excellent produce, but the Supercenter Walmarts are definitely more hit or miss when it comes to produce.

I'm probably in the minority, but I don't shop for a family.  I will do anything to keep from having to go more than one place for grocery shopping.  Even spend more money on certain items, b/c this store has the most of the items at the price point I want and quality I want.

Also, funny story:  I have a co-worker that I've never help an exceptionally high opinion of their ability.  Then, they came to me and said (verbatim), "I'm not common with R's work, can I do this?"  I didn't understand them and asked them to repeat themselves 2x and they repeated, verbatim, 2x.  Finally I said, "Do you mean familiar with R's work?"  Co-worker snaps at me, "They mean the same thing, are you not familiar with the English tongue!?"  I just shut my mouth, told them what they wanted, and I've never spoken to them since.  They just came and asked me for help and I 100% lied and said I didn't know how to do something.  Don't piss me off!

  • I try to avoid Wal-Mart in general.  Their stores are huge and often unorganized and their produce is often bagged so I can pick what I want.

DH usually gets our produce at our local grocery store and the easy stuff like bananas he either gets at the grocery or Costco.  I will say, the grocery and Costco are in town.  The Wal-mart is on the way home from work for DH but it's not that close to be persuasive in pricing as a regular stop.

Work is crazy and it's going to get worse.  The supply chain situation is super problematic and I don't think it's advisable to stock up like you're building a shelter in your basement but I do think if you really like a certain brand of a non perishable to buy it or it's going to be in stock out situations.

It's even affecting the Girl Scout cookies.  The first delivery was delayed and the second delivery won't have two of the types we were expecting due to ingredient delays.  I'm looking forward to at least a summer farm stand  in the hopes that I can buy local veggies that don't need to be shipped or labeled.
  • @mrsconn23, some of the NOLA schools are also only virtual today, because of the upcoming weather.  It seemed like there were a lot fewer school buses driving around on my morning commute today.

@MissKittyDanger, I'm a very lazy grocery shopper and rarely go more than one place, even if another store has better or cheaper items for some of the items on my list.  But that is more personal preference.

Produce is pretty bad everywhere in NOLA, so any particular store or chain doesn't seem to matter much.  It's puzzling.  We have a warm weather climate, so there's a good amount of produce that is grown here locally.  We have one of the largest ports in the country, so we are getting imported fruits/veggies fresh off the ships.

Then again, the imported stuff probably goes to a processing center somewhere and then gets trucked back.  Still.  I don't understand why other parts of the country are so much better, produce-wise.

  • Be careful in the storms! I remember when I was kid that we got such intense hail during the summer that my dad was called in to work to salt the roads.
It looks like that rain is headed to us tomorrow and Thursday.

Walmart stresses me the hell out. I went into one this weekend with N and noped out of there.
But generally ALL the produce I've seen has been shit, and I know that's because of all the supply chain/trucking issues. My dad works part time in the produce section at a grocery store in PA and he said it's been that way for months now. They'll have full crates of things that broccoli that they can't even put out.

I found out that a former friend of mine is running for state assembly in the district I just moved to. That also covers where my aunt lives, and my brother and SIL. This woman is straight up terrible, very unintelligent, and knows nothing about how government works so I'm sure she'll win.
  • Congratulations, @levioosa.  I'm so excited for you!!!  Send pics, of course, when you can!  Have a lovely time traveling and have so much fun.
  • @levioosa ahh! Have such an amazing time! Congrats!!

I'm right there with you on this. Unless I'm going out of my way for some specific reason, I prefer to do everything at one store. I'm pretty much a Publix person because it's the best produce, deli and most organized store. I'm willing to pay the extra dime per pound of chicken in exchange for that.

    Congrats @levioosa!!!!!
  • @VarunaTT we're similar.

Costco and our grocery store are in town.  Costco is also the closest gas.  It's nearly a coin flip to go to one vs. the other.

We'll do Costco for a quick meal (like a $5 chicken) and will stock up on items we use a ton of there: Frozen fruits for smoothies, frozen meatballs (kids eat a TON of them), boneless skinless chicken breasts, thighs and our meat roasts are all generally from there and their prices on block cheeses can't be beat.  We get our Parm. Reg. there at prices much lower than in the regular grocery plus toilet paper and power towels and laundry detergent. That sad - if you're in an apartment or do not have the extra space for storage in a basement freezer and shelving it's not great.    We basically use it for the bulk stuff every 2+ weeks and then the grocery store is weekly.

And while I am a CT raised on New Haven style pizza my kids love the Costco pizza and it's super cheap to pick one up on the way home.

Wait why? I haven't heard of this being issue

Idk if this is the issue. Walmart here is just small container and terrible price.
  • @levioosa, Congrats!  ((throwing virtual rice))

I love Publix!  For the three months I lived in Miami, I made a nice side gig income doing mystery shops for that chain.

Friendly employees.  Clean stores.  Good prices.  But they don't have any in Louisiana.  Meh.

  • It's a rainy Tuesday here and all I want to do is curl up, watch TV and nap.  But I'm working.  It was gorgeous here yesterday, sunny and 70 degrees.  I broke a molar over the weekend and spent part of yesterday afternoon having a crown prep done.

My BFF called me as I was on the way home from the dentist to say she was on her way to MN. Her mom had fallen and broke a hip and is having surgery today.  The mom is very active and healthy for an 80 year old so I think she'll have a good outcome from the surgery.  Fortunately, they had done some rearranging and remodeling on her home last summer to allow for one-level living.  Having a home where you can age in place is no joke.  BFF will likely be in town for a couple of weeks to help out.

Nothing too exciting here.  We have a SimpliSafe camera on our garage that keeps going offline so I need to troubleshoot that again.  The wifi signal is great but I wonder if it gets too cold where it is placed?  It's rated for -4 F but tends to go out when it gets in the teens.  We've had it replaced under warranty once already.  Last weekend I changed out winter/snowman decor for Easter/spring things.  I found a couple of things I missed so I'll get those put away tonight.

I made tacos last night so might have leftovers as nachos or taco salad tonight.  We'll see what we feel like.

I miss being able to buy in bulk.  I just don't do it much anymore b/c of both storage and it doesn't really offer savings when it's for one person.  I did the math b/c I kept my Sam's membership for a year after the divorce.  Even with K living with me, it did pay for the Sam's membership and save money, but it wasn't enough to really keep justifying the extra trip, extra money pushed out sooner, stress, plus having to figure out storage issues (though now that all of K's copious amounts of crap is out of my apartment, it might be easier).
