I know I could post this on the NYC board, but I like everyone here more and it's way slow over there.....
Anywho, has anyone seen anything recently? I know there are a few people on here that have traveled to NYC and seen theater. DH and myself are going to see Ragtime this weekend!

When is Ragtime closing, the 10th? Friends of mine had tickets after the New Year and were bummed that it was closing...but were ecstatic when they found out it was extended!
From what I've heard from my theater friends, Ragtime is utterly brilliant. I loved the original show and I can't imagine how they could make it better, but I guess they did!
I've also heard raves about Next to Normal, which won a bunch of Tonys last year.

Ragtime is supposed to be da-bomb. There's a new Twyla Tharp dance show of all Frank Sinatra music opening in March. I'm biased with that one too though.
I want to go to Broadway. I even want to go to the touring shows. I've only been to one, and it was basically for FI's niece--101 Dalmations. on my list: Phantom of the Opera!!!!! Wicked Lion King Chicago West Side Story Rent Mamma Mia Les Miserables Miracle Worker *sigh*

I saw Phantom twice, but want to see the new one, so add in the *cough* not <em>real</em> Broadway show of Avenue Q and you have the list that I want to see.
Pooh the only one on your list I haven't seen on Bway is Miracle Worker, but that's opening soon! With Abigail Breslin as ms. Keller. I can tell you right now that Lion King is one of my fave shows. DH doesn't even like musicals (he tells me that he likes plays and drama musicals) and he said that Lion King is in his top 5 theater experiences ever!

Lion King is visually stunning!

Stina, my audience wasn't so bad, except for the girl sitting next to me, who was the most annoying audience member ever - playing with her phone, sighing, twitching, flipping through the program, shaking her leg. I don't know how anyone could be bored with Leonard Bernstein.
Pooh, you should just go! I've seen a lot of those shows and others in community theater productions, and even with community theater you get a sense of how the play works.

Huh? New Phantom? Like the Yeston version vs. the Lloyd Weber?
Ave Q was on Bway for awhile, but closed and then moved off bway.

*pout*
I would go to the shows when they come to Houston, but I can't afford them right now. when I become a nurse and start making the big bucks, I'll grab my best friend and go. she's as obsessed with the shows as I am. FI won't take me. another *pout*.
Ragtime got extended to the 10th. I went to Broadwaybox.com and the tickets are ridiculously cheap. I guess no one is seeing it and that's why it's closing....we're going to see it for $70 a piece in the orchestra.....which is a steal!!!
Posted by stina93446
Oh. my. god. I want to see it sooooooooo bad. *pout*
I've played it twice regionally (flute/picc) and adore the music and the show in general.

<div>I think she means new Avenue Q, not new phantom.</div><div>
</div><div>And sucrets, I agree about LK being visually perfect! I can always cry during the first scene. I have a friend who has visited 2 times and she refuses to see LK because of the "weird masks" (I kid you not) and she doesn't want to see Avenue Q because "I can't focus on the puppets if I see the people on stage." I've tried to persuade her otherwise.....sigh</div>
Sucrets, Billy IS amazing! I saw it with the newest Billy though. I went with my FIL and he was such a bad audience member. The kid was so talented....and all my FIL could say was "he's not really a kid, he's a midget." He was trying to be funny, but I was not amused and I nearly slapped him. My DH liked the ballet scene, so I think we can attempt going to the ballet and he won't kill me!

1. That's shitty. Those kids are ridiculously talented!
2. That's awesome! I do love ballet - my mom and I went to see The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center over break and there were tons of well behaved little girls there, all dressed up. It was the cutest thing!!

$$$$$ is the only thing standing in the way of me going to shows. that, and time. *sigh* all in due time.

Ah, okay. Comprehension fail on my part.
That's odd about the masks...they're quite beautiful!
I can somewhat get the puppet thing, but you totally get used to it. Like the revival of Sweeney Todd - as much as I am a pit musician and an actor, it took me a good 20 minutes to get used to the cast playing the instruments on stage themselves.

<div>I am so excited because I have a feeling that DH will like it. He is not into the campy musicals....he liked Hairspray because the music was good. But he was not a fan Chorus Line, Spamalot, etc.</div><div>
</div><div>He LOVED Spring Awakening though. And Gypsy.....he liked WSS, and then to throw my whole theory off, he just claimed that he liked Xanadu! WTF DH!</div>

They (Andew LLoyd Weber) are coming out with a sequel to the Phantom (Phantom:: Love Never Dies) and it will be set in NY. I don't quite know how I feel about it but maybe if I saw it I would be ok with it.

<div>Yeah, I know. Sometimes I want to bop her on the head and say "no!"</div><div>
</div><div>I loved Sweeney Todd! I loved that the actors were the musicians. I didn't see Company though so I didn't get to see if it worked in a different musical. </div><div>
</div><div>Another musical that takes a few minutes to get into is Naked Men Singing. When they come out with nothing on, you kind of have that "why aren't you wearing clothes?!" moment....when the show is near the end, there is a scene where a guy is wearing clothes and he just looks silly because you've been watching naked guys for an hour.</div>

No I don't mean new Avenue Q I mean new Phantom, sequel, set in Coney Island. ALW put out a ton of cash to move teh plot from Paris to NY.

My friend programmed the keyboards for Company, but I didn't get to see it. Is that the one that they released on dvd through PBS? I'm pretty sure I bought it, just haven't watched it yet. Oops.
My friend was in Naked Men Singing. Go him! I certainly could never do that.

Okay, Phantom was the first Bway show I saw, back in 1992ish, so it holds a special place in my heart. But I've seen it a few times since then and it was just awful. I can't imagine a sequel being good. At all.
Haven't we learned our lesson from Annie Warbucks and Snoopy?
