  • Ugh I miss FFF every damn time.  Why do I have practice at 12? When am I supposed to eat lunch? Never.  It's their way of slimming me down.

It should come as no surprise to me that I don't mind smoking bans. This year, for our regional NCAA meet (xc in Maine) I stayed in a SMOKING hotel room/hallway.  I have asthma.  The door did not lock either (safe!) so I complained and they said they could give me another room.  It was even smokier.

WHO PUTS RUNNERS IN SMOKING ROOMS FFS.  Still bitter.

Its worse when it's a non-smoking room and people have clearly been smoking.  I don't just have a preference for non-smoking, i require it.  To breathe.
  • In CA, bars and restaurants where the entire staff owns a part of the business can allow smoking.  I think the goal was to protect waiters/staff from involuntary second hand smoke or something.

According to the CDC, 21% of U.S. Americans smoke.  I'm guessing that it's different proportions in different regions.  But do you think that in regions where smoking is more prevalent that most restaurants and bars would chose to allow smokers?  Would nonsmokers in that area make a big stink about not having places to go out?  I wonder how it would all shake out.  Ponder, ponder, ponder.

(anyone see my Miss South Carolina reference?)

  • Prior to all of these smoking bans, people could smoke anywhere.  I'm not sure when it all changed.  But if an establishment had wanted to change to fully non-smoking would they have been subjected to lawsuits?

I'm just wondering why no one was smoke free (at least in Ohio), before the laws went into effect.
  • Probably because they'd lose a lot of business, MP. Referring to bars and restaurants anyway.

  • The last time I went to Cracker Barrel at my lake house (western Kentucky) they still asked you if you wanted to sit in the smoking section or not. So weird.

I like smoking bans and I do (socially) smoke.  But I can agree with the bolded.

When I go and gamble over in Indiana, I hate how I stink like smoke.

I think now that there has been a smoking ban non smokers would make a big deal about it being repealed, but before then it was just always how it was.  You want to go out for a drink?  Inhale second hand smoke.  Want dinner? You'd get asked what section you want to sit at, and pretend that you were safe from 2 tables over.

We have a good friend that owns a bowling alley.  He didn't ban smoking because he didn't want to lose business to the only other bowling alley that also allowed smoking, but he wanted to.  He was all for the smoking ban.  He hated the way smoking made his building all gross, and how bad it was for the kids that went there, but so many of the regulars smoked.  Now he has all his old business and no smoking, but I get that not everyone feels that way.

Why not err on the side of non-smoking for athletes?

Also, shouldn't your coach be aware of medical conditions his athletes have?

That's true.  I know there was a big stink about it when West Lafayette went non-smoking.  I don't think the bars are hurting for business, though.

But this makes me feel like the smoking ban was necessary then.
  • I remember pre-smoking ban days very well.  Remember airplanes?  How can there be a non-smoking section in a closed box with recycled air?  Those 13 hour flights to Asia were killers.  I can only imagine how asthmatics managed to fly in those days.

  • Oh man, when Fargo went non-smoking, the bar people got UP IN ARMS, ZOMG, your business is gonna go down!!! CRY TEAR WAILING.

When in reality? People who go to the bar, still go to the bar. You can't smoke in ANY bar in Fargo, so you're NOT gonna lose people to other bars because..well...You can't smoke ANYWHERE.

And? People who used to NOT go to the bars because of the smoke, all of a sudden started going out more.

Actually, back in those days, we were generally left out in the wilderness to die.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: What happened : I do think it's ok for a hospital to ban smoking. There are patients who are not necessarily choosing to be in the hospital, but have to be there. Their safety shouldn't be in danger when they cannot or do not have the choice of leaving the hospital.

Exactly. I never understood why hospitals weren't the first place for smoking to be banned once they found out the health risks. You're a hospital!

  • Because a huge percentage of nurses smoke?

I dunno.  I agree that it doesn't make sense that hospitals wouldn't all ban smoking.
  • Mica, you must be old.  I don't remember smoking on airplanes.  That sounds like an accident waiting to happen.  "Let's light something on fire in an enclosed space with pressurized air!"

I do remember "Smoking or non?" at restaurants.
  • I actually thought the town next to us was the only one that still had smoking, but I met Rach in Ft Worth a few weeks ago at a bar with smoking. So I think there's actually quite a few cities in DFW that allow it.

  • I don't think you have to be all that old to remember smoking on airplanes.  I don't think they completely banned it on all flights until '98 or something like that.  I know it was around my senior year of HS.

I think they banned it on domestic flights in the late 80s - I remember the outrage.

  • Personally, I go out far more now that I don't come home reeking of cigarette smoke, or have to leave because I can't breathe.  The girl huddled in the corner of the bar with her inhaler?  Doesn't have to be me anymore.
