Question about table linens...

Our venue has large rounds that fit 8 people per table.  We are doing white tablecloths, and I bought this fabric to make table runners:

Should I stick with the regular long table runners, or should I make large squares for the center of the table?  I read some feedback on the DIY board about how long table runners look awkward on round tables, and now I'm second guessing my choice.  I have enough fabric for either option (the squares will actually use less, I think).  Thanks, I appreciate your thoughts!

Re: Question about table linens...

  • I actually bought some bandanas at Hobby Lobby that I will be using on our round tables that seat 8. I wanted to do runners but they just didn't look right to me. I prefer the squares it fits the tables better. I say go with the squares but it's really up to you and what you like best.
  • I am doing squares for our round tables, and the long ones with our rectangular tables..
I think the long looks a little strange on round tables, it splits it down the middle, which leaves guests on the sides of it stuck trying to balance their glasses/plates on different layers of linens, etc. If it's in the center as a square, you get the same decor without messing with practicality.

Or so I think, atleast. :)

  • I'm starting to lean towards making the squares.  I think I'll have enough fabric left over to make the long runners for our extra tables (i.e. cake, buffet, escort cards) that are rectangular. :)
  • I think it would depend on how wide your runner is... Also, how big would the squares be? Just big enough for the center, or would it be more like an overlay that hangs off the edge of the table?

    I love that fabric!

  • Probably just big enough for the center, maybe 2'x2'?  I'd have to calculate how big I can actually make them based on how much fabric I have.  It's cotton fabric, so I think making them big enough for overlays might be too "heavy" looking?
  • I think squares will look better and I agree then you don't have to deal with plates on the edge of the runner if your a guest.  I think we are either doing squares or circles in the center.

  • I would just do the square piece in the middle, a table runner might look weird on a round table.

  • I'm going to be using burlap table runners for my round tables. (72"). I personally think they look fine. I orginally wanted overlays, but couldn't find them in the size or fabric I needed/wanted.

Here is an example of runners on round tables. Just my 2 cents.

<div>I'm doing this as well. I personally think the squares look better on the round tables. And I'm doing just a 2' X 2' square as well, just to give the table a little pop of color.</div>
  • i never thought the runners looked weird on a round table, and if you only fold the edges over once and stitch then there shouldn't be a weird bump on the edge for people to have to move their glasses to keep from wobbling. (but i can see how that would be a problem for a thicker hem)

we have white tableclothes and i made small squares (14"x14") for my centerpieces to sit on, and i made green napkins for each place setting, so we'll have color all over the place  haha!
  • Personally I would go with the runners. If the square is small then your centerpiece will take up most of the square and the patterend fabric would go mostly un-noticed. If it was a runner you would get more of a statement. You made the effort to get something different so I say show it off!
  • I'd go with the squares =]

This. And I'm personally not a fan of the squares; for some reason, it looks unfinished to me.
