How did your FI propose?

We were on vacation and went to the Grand Canyon.  Windy and cold (below average temperature in April), he ushered me off the beaten path to get a closer look of the Canyon.  As I gazed at this natural wonder, he called me over and motioned me to sit next to him on this huge rock.  He proposed right there.  I can't ask for a more memorable (and beautiful) location.

I tried to call my dad and couldn't get in touch with him, then FI told me my dad already knew!  He already had his blessing :)

I called my mom later in the day:
Me: Mom, I'm engaged!
Mom:  Does "J" know (my FI)?

My mom thinks she's a comedian :)

Re: How did your FI propose?

  • FI and I were in CT visiting my parents.  After dinner he asked if I wanted to get ice cream so we went to get ice cream.  He then said he wanted to go to the beach.  It was about 7:30 at this point and we were supposed to meet my friend at the bar around 8:30 so I didn't want to go.  I gave him like 3 excuses as to why I didn't want to go to the beach but he drove there anyway.  (I still didn't suspect anything at this point.)  We finally get to the beach and sit and talk for awhile.  Then he starts "the speech" and the rest is a blur.  It was right around sunset too and it was perfect.  I kept asking if my dad knew (I had told him it was important to me he ask for his blessing) and then he pulled out the ring which was my great grandmother's and I knew obviously my parents knew because they gave him the ring.  I had left my cell phone at home so I couldn't call anyone!  When we got back to my parent's house they were waiting to hear the news and then had champagne ready to toast us and I could finally call people!  It was perfect :)

  • No "cheesy" story from me. LOL. We were talking about it for a while, then one day he says, "Well, we need to go to the store today and pick your ring out." Yup, that's him. No hopeless romantic or anything. But, in his defense, this was a year after I gave him a ring for Christmas (which he ended up losing), so we already knew we were eventually going to get married again (second time for both of us).

  • Well mind is kinda TMI not many people know the real story but I feel I can tell you ladies because we've all gotten close. FI just finished basic training and was deploying a month and a half later. We went to the mall with multiple jewelry stores we had looked at and I was hoping hed pick the one I found with him and fell in love with. We split up and met up when he was done. He put it in his pocket so I was so antsy! We got a hotel room because well lets face it it was his first full day back and we had been apart for 4-5 months ;) FI set up candles and everything. It was so romantic. Unfortunately after going that long without sex it hurt and I felt so bad we got a hotel room and couldn't do much. I said sorry I ruined our hotel day and he said you didn't ruin but you know how you could make it better? He pulled me to the edge of the bed and got the ring out of the end table. Then he said you can say yes, will you marry me? Of course I said yes and was bawling lol. But that's the story lol
  • Aww I love reading these!! Mine's copied and pasted from my planning bio.. haha, it's kinda long..

Well, let me just say I was COMPLETELY dumbfounded. I had NO idea!! It was the weekend of Bikes, Blues and BBQ, a huge motorcycle rally in Northwest Arkansas. Austin's parents wanted to come, so we set it up where they could ride with us and stay at my parents house that weekend. Little did I know they were coming because he was proposing! The first day that we were there, Austin took his dad in my dad's convertible (which he drives all the time when we go up there) to my dad's work to look at my dad's business. Nothing weird about that. Little did I know, he was asking my dad for his blessing!
He had mentioned earlier in the week before we came to Fayetteville he had wanted to go see the chapel where I wanted to get married. He had mentioned it before so I thought it was a little weird but didn't think anything of it. That day he brought it up again, so I just said okay and off we went, to Chapel on the Creeks. I've wanted to get married there since I've known about the chapel. I honestly thought he just wanted to see the chapel. We went inside, looked around, went outside, looked around, and went back inside. I looked once more towards the front... He asked how much I loved it. I told him of course I loved it, I had for forever. I turned around and he asked if I wanted to get married there... to HIM! And then he reached in his pocket and knelt down. I instantly put my hand over my mouth and started bawling. I couldn't even speak, I just held out my hand.
Little did I know, EVERYONE knew about it except me. He had had the ring of my dreams for over a month.

We say he proposed at my favorite restaurant. We were gonna go to that restaurant after but I wasn't super hungry and I was so excited to tell my family
  • It was my birthday and he had made me cupcakes (which he does every year). And at one point he was icing them and I walked over towards the kitchen and he FREAKED out and motioned for me to stay away. Then he told me I was not allowed to open the fridge. And in the back of my mind I thought "what, did he write 'will you marry me' on them? But I pushed that thought out of my mind because he was acting so...normal.

HOURS went by, we made dinner, watched a movie, etc. Then he said it was cupcake time, so he went and lit them and carried over the tray, singing happy birthday. And instead of the final "Happy birthday to you" he sang "will you marry me?" and got down on one knee, holding the cupcakes.

After I asked him are you serious? about 15 times, he put down the tray and pulled out his grandmother's ring. And that is when I burst into tears because I realized it was finally real.

  • FI surprised me when I came home from work. When I walked into the apartment there were pictures of us plastered everywhere in the kitchen and living room (see below). Along with the pictures he had hand-written notes to me that were about the significant points in our relationship from his perspective (the first time we met, our first date, our trips to the Bahamas and New York, ect. I walked around the path he had laid out for me and eventually came to the bedroom door and when I opened it he was down on one knee and asked me to marry him. There were candles lit, champagne on ice and he even made a "Marry Me" playlist with all my favorite songs on it.

It was perfect. I just wanted to be surprised (we had already talked about getting married and looked at rings so I knew he was thinking about it but didn't know when it was going to happen or if he had bought the ring yet.) It was also the week of Christmas 2010 so we were able to surprise our families over Christmas weekend

  • My fiancee and I are both University of Tennessee fans, so every fall we make a trip to Knoxville to cheer on the Vols. One of the pre-game festivities is for the band to march down to the stadium and "salute the hill" where all the fans stand. While the band was playing "Rocky Top", I am taking pictures and singing along not even paying attention to Bradley. He puts his arm around me and says, "you know I love you right?" I replied, "sure, and I love you too". He then said, "well I have a question for you." I turn to look at him and he is on one knee with the ring in his hand, and says "will you marry me?" I grab the ring, he stands up, I jump into his arms and start crying. I had no idea this was coming!!!! We called our parents who knew all along what was going to happen that weekend.

    The Proposal

So, I knew the proposal was coming, because we talking about marriage. I just had no idea when and where and it was driving me crazy! When Omar and I went shopping and I knew he found the perfect ring because when he put it on my finger I cried like a baby!

On the day of our one year anniversary, I called Omar and let him know that I was on my way over to his house, after work. He told me that once I got there that we were going to a store because he wanted me to help him pick out cabinets. Now, I was confused because I thought we were going to dinner to celebrate our anniversary.

Once, I got there, Omar was still getting dressed and I was anxious and ready to go. I sat down on the bed and tried to wait patiently. LOL. Omar came in the room and asked me if I was ready for my anniversary gift. I said yes and got very excited. He went over to the corner of the room and pulled out a Littman Jeweler bag and I immediately thought that this was IT! He pulled out a Littman Jewelry box and just handed it to me and said "Happy Anniversary". I thought it was strange, but did not comment. I opened the box and noticed that there were earrings in the box.

Being the goofball that Omar is, he asked me if I liked my present and I said yes. I am not going to lie; I already knew the expression that I had on my face because I just thought I KNEW that there was an engagement ring in that box. To this day, Omar still says he wishes he had a video camera to record the look that I had on my face.

Omar then said to me, that I was just playing; here is your real gift. He went back in the corner and pulled out another ring box and handed it to me. I looked at him and opened the box and saw that there was a silver necklace inside. I think I looked at the box and the necklace in confusion because I could not understand why Omar was playing with my emotions. After letting me be speechless for a minute, he said to me, "Let me stop playing with you, here is your real gift."

I turned my head away for a second and when I turned back around, Omar was on one knee with a blue box in his hand. I started to cry before he could even ask me anything. He opened the box and there was the ring that he picked out for me. He asked me to marry him and I said YES!!!!!

  • FI wanted to give me an early Christmas present. I opened up the present, and it was a great black purse (that I still use today). He then opened the purse, and pulled out my ring :) It was so unexpected, I love how he planned it out. Tears were flowing, but I called my parents and MOH, who knew it was happening that day. Perfect for us!

  • I'm gonna c&p mine too.

Chelsea and Alex had their first kiss in a room in the campus center at Lawrence University (where Chelsea went to school) called the Esch dance studio. It is a big room with huge windows over looking the river (very romantic). That night, Corey (Alex’s best friend) and Chelsea had plans to hang out, but little did she know, he was actually playing wingman for Alex. Corey asked for a tour of campus, so as he and Chelsea walked through the campus center, Alex was patiently waiting in the Esch room. When Chelsea got to the room with Corey, the lights were dimmed and there was a huge blue teddy bear sitting in the middle of the room holding a red bag (see picture). She immediately figured out what was going on, gave Corey “the look” and walked in the room by herself. “Then” by Brad Paisley started playing (their song) while Alex hid behind a pillar (she seriously had no idea where he was haha). She opened the bag and pulled out the ring box, but there was no ring on it. He came out from behind the pillar and they danced to their song. Then he got down on one knee, pulled out the ring and asked her to marry him. :)
  • Hmm. It was one month after my birthday and a month before our 3 year anniversary.(Everyone expected the birthday, when he didn't, they assumed our anniversary. He always said it wouldn't be on a already special day.) I came home to work to find out that he had came home from camping a day early. He had been camping 4 hours out of our city. I was already surprised and happy to see him. He had bought me a ring pop and put it on the island in our kitchen. (I'm a candy fiend, he knew I'd go right for it.) He was sitting on the couch and told me to go get the treat he bought me on the way home. I went and grabbed it, came back and sit down on the couch, opened it up and started eating it. As I went to put the wrapper on the coffee table, a little note fell out that said Will you marry me? I started crying and he hugged me. He told me he loved me and that he decided the night before while he was camping. He made me finish the ring pop (no biting it) before I could call anyone! We have the wrapper from the ring pop and the note in a picture frame with a cute pic of us on our mantel. =)
  • These are all such great stories!! Here's mine (also copied and pasted):

Justin bought the house in October 2010 and he had asked me to move in with him. We had been putting a lot of money into it so we decided not to exchange Christmas gifts. About a week before the proposal he had asked my parents for their permission so they knew it was coming, but didn't know when.

On Christmas morning around 8am Justin went downstairs to feed the cat while I was still in bed. He came back upstairs and excitedly said "Santa came! I brought your stocking up for you." I responded, "Santa wasn't supposed to come, you broke the rule." He said "yeah, I know but I saw this had had to get it for you" so I told him that I broke the rule too and that his gift was in my car. As I opened it he was kneeling next to the bed. I saw it and was like "nahhhh, is this what I think it is?" He said yes and asked me to marry him. The whole time I was opening it I wanted it to secretly be a ring but we hadn't seriously talked about getting married, had only been together a year and living together 2 months and he had been known to take things extremely slow.  I thought it might have been earrings that he bought me on a cruise that I had to return because they were defective and anytime I asked for new earrings he kept saying no.  But of course I kept my mouth shut JUST IN CASE until I actually opened the box.

It was a huge surprise to everyone, my parents were the only ones that knew. Many people were expecting it to be soon, but didn't know that it would be on Christmas morning. I decided not to tell anyone in my family and to let them see it at 5pm when I got to my cousin's house. I even lied to my cousin when she texted me asking if I got a gift. I felt so guilty, but I thought for sure she would be the one to notice. Surprisingly, she didn't notice even when my hand was practically in her face. I ended up telling her and the news was now public. It was so difficult to keep that a secret for 9 hours!

    Everyone's stories are so cute!

    Here's ours from our website:

    My version:
I was on vacation with my family in San Francisco, CA, visiting the WInchester Mansion. I had always wanted to see the house and so was already excited about the day. We got there and started to tour the grounds, while my dad went to go take an important phone call, or so I was told. When he got back, my mom told us to all take a family picture in front of the house. My sister set the timer on the camera and was like "Wait, there's someone in the background!". My dad just told her not to worry about it and to hurry and get in the picture. After the flash went off, I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned around to see that FI had snuck up behind us and was standing right there, in California! I was so surprised and happy to see him. We had talked about getting engaged before, but I didn't expect him to fly out to California like that. He got down on one knee, and the rest is a blur. I, of course, said yes and started to cry.

    FI's version:
I finished my internship on August 10 and boarded a plane to San Jose that evening to surprise SJ at the Winchester House the next day during her family vacation. On the way to Las Vegas, where I switched flights to reach my final destination, I sat by a younger couple in their 20's. We started talking about why we were heading out west, which I responded by saying I was going to meet up with my girlfriend's family in San Francisco and the girl randomly asked me if I was heading out there to ask for her hand in marriage. After I told them how I was planning on proposing, we celebrated and had a few drinks on the plane. I got into San Jose a little after midnight local time and texted Sj's parents to let them know that I made it in town. We had mildly setup a plan of how I wanted to propose, by surprising her in the grounds of the Winchester Mansion (since photography was not allowed inside). The next morning, her dad came and picked me up from my hotel that was about 10 minutes from the Winchester Mansion. After we got to the mansion, heand I walked around the grounds looking for SJ and the rest of her family. After we finally found them, I hid behind some shrubbery waiting for the right time to sneak out and surprise her. While her family was posing for a picture in the front courtyard of the Mansion, I came out and crept up behind them. Right after the picture was taken, SJ turned around and saw me and said, "What the heck are you doing here?" I proceeded to get down on one knee and told her that I loved her and wanted to spend the rest of my life with her and asked her to marry me. After she said yes, I shakily placed the ring on her finger and listened to her repeatedly say "What the heck" and tell me that I'm crazy. It was an awesome proposal and I'm glad I was able to make it so memorable for both her and myself.
  • Mine wasn't a surprise, or super romantic, but I was still excited nonetheless! FI and I picked out my ring together, but he had it for for over a month before he proposed. Since I don't work during the summer, I used to stay at FI's house for days at a time when he lived here. One night he not so discreetly told me, "You're going to have to go home at some point so I can propose to you when you come back." He's not very subtle, is he? =) He ended up just asking me to leave the house for a couple hours the next day and told me to make sure I came in the front door when I came back (we always went in the side door).

When I came back (after a text message that said, "You can come back now." Again, very subtle he was!) I opened the door to see a bright pink (my favorite color) ribbon going throughout the apartment with notes attached to it. FI had a projector screen that he used as his TV, but was also connected to a computer, and there was a powerpoint slide with pictures of us and a message that said, "I always tell you you're my FP (which stands for favorite person), follow the ribbon to find out why." The notes attached to the ribbon had qualities that he admired. When I got to the end, he was waiting and got down on one knee.

So, although I knew I was going to be proposed to that day, I was suprised with how he went about doing it and it was really cute and sweet.

  • During our senior year of high school, a group went on a trip to France over spring break. FI waited until we went to the top of the Eiffel Tower at night and then he proposed surrounded by our group and a bunch of facinated strangers. He got down on one knee and everything and when he slipped the ring on my finger everyone cheered. :)
  • Everyone's stories are soo great! What a happy time :D

Copied from our wedding website :)

Alli had spent 3 months at a traveler's resource center in Peru. Practicing her spanish and getting some event coordinating experience.

At the end of the 3 months, Kyle planned a trip down to visit Alli which included a , Machu Picchu. . We woke up the morning of our trek to Machu Picchu at 3:30am to be sure we were one of the first people in line to get "stamped" for the climb up Waynu Picchu...the sister mountain with the perfect view of the ancient city.

We made it up in time and then got in line at the trail head to begin our trek! Because kyle's much longer legs (and probably his nervousness) he was racing up the hill. Alli could barely keep up. AT the top, Kyle took her around to a little side area of the mountain where nobody was. He got on one knee and explained how much of an adventure our relationship has been, how awesome this Machu Picchu hike has been, and how much he wants to have many more adventures together for the rest of our lives....some other sweet stuff....and then after a few "What are you doing?!?"..."are you forreal?!?"..."WHAT?!?!"...I finally said "YES!"

We got to celebrate our engagement hiking around the beautiful ancient city. It was an amazing and beautiful experience!

The middle picture in my siggy is from the day we got engaged :)

  • I love reading everyone's story!

We were in Kaui, Hawaii with FI's family for vacation. There was one activity that we wanted to do and no one else wanted to go. Mountain tubing through an old sugar plantation. The whole time FI was playing with his pocket on his swimsuit the whole time... it was weird but I just ignored him. At the end of the trip we all stopped for lunch in front of a watering hole. FI walked down to the water hole while they were cleaning up lunch and getting ready to go. He thought I would follow but I didn't he waived me down. I was slightly annoyed because we were getting ready to leave. I walked down and he looked out over the view and said "Isn't this beautiful?" I was like yeah yeah pretty lets go there are gonna leave us and I started booking up back the hill... he yelled slow down sparky... and I turned around to encourage him to hurry up.. he stood there with a huge grin on his face and started putting the ring on my finger as he asked "Will you marry me?" I looked at the ring looked at him and jumped on him.. and then I said "You are not screwing with me, right?" (he had told me when we first started dating he wasn't sure he ever wanted to get married and we had been dating for 5 years) It was so awesome! Here is a pic right before we got engaged.. I looked real hot (LOL) swimsuit, keens, hat...  But it was perfect!
  • I knew he was going to propose to me that year.  We'd been ring shopping together, because it was important to him that I liked the ring I was getting; we had picked a few settings and he was going to make the final decision...but I had no idea when.

His niece's birthday party was the day before Easter, and that Thursday he suggested we go for a walk after the party.  On Friday, he asked if I knew when the sun was setting on Saturday evening, and when I didn't know he downloaded an app to his phone to find out.  He was very persistent about this, which got me a little suspicious but again, I tried to put it out of my mind.  After his niece's birthday party, Hunter and I came home but he was impatient to go on our walk.  He went and put on a sweatshirt, and drove us out to a local beach.  We strolled along the beach for a few minutes, enjoying the fresh air and beautiful ocean sunset, when I realized his hands were shaking and a little clammy, and his heart was nearly pounding out of his chest!  About halfway down the beach we stopped to enjoy the sunset, at which point he wrapped me in his arms, pulled out the ring, and asked me to marry him.

We told his whole family the next day, and I was TERRIFIED.  I cried and hyperventilated the whole way up to see them, and kept asking him the craziest questions - what if they really hated me, what if they thought I was too fat to marry him, what if his nieces and nephews held me down and beat me up, what if I got possessed by a demon?  But they were SUPER excited.

We wanted to tell all of our family in person so we waited until the next weekend when we saw my parents to tell them.  I'm glad we told his family first; mine weren't upset, but their reactions were basically, "Oh.  Okay, whatever."

  • I c&p from my bio:

    Well ... It's a three part story ...

In June of 2010, we took the saphire pendant he got me for Christmas into the jewlery store to have it's semi annual looking at. While we were waiting on the lady to finish looking it over and clean it, he pulled me over to the glass case full of diamond rings and asked me which ones I liked. As we looked over the diamond rings, he asked me which one I would like to have with my wedding band ... After we picked up the pendant from the jewlery, we headed out into the mall and continued to talk about "what if" ... That night, he kissed my hand and moved my Claduagh from my right hand to my left hand, his Cladaugh to his left hand, and asked if he could spend the rest of his life making me happy ...

SO we began to talk and plan ... kinda ...

For my birthday (Oct 14), he and the children took me out to dinner. After the food arrived, He pulled a ring box out of his pocket and gave it to me ... I was "surpised" by a pair of Steelers earring that fell out of the ring box and into my fetucini Alfredo ...

On October 16, around 9:30 pm, my beloved homebody declared that he wanted to go dancing ... So we looked up places to "go dancing" and drove up to Roanoke to hear some live music at some establishments in Downtown. After some snacks & Dr. Pepper (and a little dancing) every where was closing down and we headed back to the car. As always, he opened my door to the car and I got in a buckled my seat belt ... But he didn't close the door as I was buckling. When I looked back to see why the door was still open, he was down on one knee with a beautiful wooden box in his hand. As he opened the box, he said "This isn't eactly how I planned it, but ...I love you and want to be with you always ... Will you marry me?" It was perfect to me ... no matter what he says ... and he says he has now officially changed my birthday ot Oct 17 because he proposed and I accepted at 1:30 am on Oct 17, 2010 ...

*He showed the ring to my oldest (and asked her permission) when he bought the set in August. She helped him plan the birthday dinner and the weekend proposal ... 17 year old girls are clever children if you raise them right(she's 19 now) ... The boy (12 then, now 13) is grinning from ear to ear ... and the little one (7 year old girl, now 8 yr old flower girl) has decided it was her idea that we get married and now has her own "wedding planner"

  • FI and I had discussed marriage for quite awhile, went to look at/try on rings but I thought it would be awhile still!

We went to Puerto Rico on vacation together in April. We LOVE traveling...this is going to sound crazy but one of our first "dates" was a random trip we just decided to take together to Seattle even though we had just met each other like 2 months before and live 5 hours apart.

Anyway we go to San Juan and it was fabulous. On our first full day there we decided to walk to Old San Juan from our hotel because we didn't want to spend money on taxis or wait for the bus. It ended up being a great idea..it was  a long walk but we discovered this cute little park and walked along the coast during the sunset. We ended up over by the Capitol building which is very close to one of the old forts that are gorgeous. We climbed up this hill that was fenced off (oops haha) and we could see the whole city and the ocean it was just amazing. As I was getting my camera out of my purse FI swooped in and gave me a hug..and didn't really let go. I could feel him tryiing to get something out of his pocket while he was hugging me..he told me how much he loves me and that he wants to spend the rest of his life with me and then got down and asked me to marry him! I was surprised--I really didn't think it was coming that quick after looking for rings but it was everything I wanted in a proposal. I just wanted it to be us. I was really proud of him because he "waited til the moment was right" and really nailed it.

I went to call my family and turns out he didn't ask my dad's permission!! HE KNEW he was supposed to but didn't want to because he knew dad would tell mom who would tell everyone and I would find out. Soooo we didn't tell anyone for 2 days. I made him call my dad and "ask" the next day and then we pretended like it happened the day after lol.

  • Aw, what cute stories! Here's mine:

My fiance and I had both been up in my home town (5 hours away), visiting my family for a week. He took the bus back early, on Wednesday night, because on Friday he had a tour for an accounting company that he wants to work for when he graduates. I drove down on Friday and arrived at his house around 9pm. He let me in the back door and I stood inside the kitchen, which was spotlessly clean. He was dressed up, but I was expecting that, because he had been visiting that company. He had me wait in the kitchen for a few minutes, and then brought a blindfold for me to wear.

He led me into the living room, and when I removed the blindfold, I saw a table with a bottle of wine and two glasses, and a wooden platter covered in tiger lilies (which I have been obsessing about for the last few months!) Under the flowers, there was a ring box. I opened it, but it was empty! Then I turned around, and he was down on one knee holding a vegan chocolate cake that he'd made himself. With icing, he'd written "Marry me?" with two boxes underneath labeled "yes" and "yes" (I really couldn't say no!)

I said "yes," then he put the ring on my finger and led me into the kitchen to "make things official." He gave me a little ziplock bag with red frosting in it to squeeze check marks into the "yes" boxes on the cake! This was followed by a blur of wine, tears, photos, and barely comprehensible phone calls to family. THE END :)
  • We had been discussing it and looking at rings for about a year. We finally found one that I loved. FI knew that I was done waiting, we had been together over 4 years and I was getting impatient. (He is one of those guys that don't see the rush and like routine.)

Thanksgiving 2010 he proposed. It was really late and we were headed to bed ;) I finished brushing my teeth and we were standing in the living room just snuggling and I started to go to our bedroom. He said "Wait, I have to do something" and he got on one knee and asked me to marry him.

He had the ring for about a week before he proposed and I thought he had bought it. He put his checkbook by his coat so he would remember it. He never takes his checkbook. I tried not to read into it too much because I have had my hopes shattered for about two years.

  • We were walking around at a Gem and Mineral show and I was looking at various cut stones most of the day. Chris asked me which ones I liked best and I pointed to a lot of tanzanite, sapphires, and amethysts. I ultimately fell in love with a blue diamond. At one booth, we found various settings and Chris agreed to buy me a ring "just because". After looking at various stones and settings for over an hour, we agreed on a ring together that I thought was a "just because" ring. After watching the setting being buffed, polished, and the gem set he let me wear the ring for a few hours. Once I was fully attached and in complete love with the ring, he took it to "re-clean it" for me and "make it really shine". Later that night, we were playing a video game together that he edited to check the settings. After getting frustrated with the lag on my computer, he came over to "look at it". While he was down on one knee he told me he loved me and wanted to be with me for the rest of his life. As he pulled out the ring he asked if I would marry him. With one of the biggest smiles ever on my face I of course said yes.

Mine is also C&P from my bio. I added some more details though if you've read it before.

It was a busy day for us, but a wonderful one too. We started the day in the county Matt works in at the soccer invitational, covering it for his job. We got to watch both High School teams win in a row before we had to leave to go to the golf course. The boys were hosting an invitational tournament for golf and it was my first time ever in a golf cart. We found the coach and some of the players for information and photo ops.

After that, we headed to the park for a benefit for a student in the county. It was really nice and we were all dressed up because he wanted to look professional for the interviews he was conducting (and little did I know, so he could propose to me later). We stayed there for a while and participated in the raffle drawings and the silent auction baskets.

We left there and headed to Oktoberfest in Cincy. We parked in the Tower Place parking garage and he asked if I wanted to go to TJ Maxx. Of course I excitedly said yes, I used to work at a different one and had never been in that one. We shopped around there for a while and then headed out. Matt kept looking at his watch and I had no idea why until later. He was nervous that the tower would close before we got up there.

I just thought we were heading out to Oktoberfest, but we took a detour to the top of the Carew tower. He had been planning on taking me up there at some point, so I didn't think anything unusual of it. We looked around for a while then he gave me a quarter to look through the long distance binoculars and said he would be right back. When he came back, the binoculars had already shut themselves off and I was just looking myself. He told me that he had something for me and proceeded to get down on one knee and ask me to marry him. I of course tearfully said yes and gave him a big hug and kiss. He put the ring on my finger and I haven't stopped looking at it since that moment.

When he walked away, he had given his camera to a gentleman to take pictures of us and they turned out wonderfully. Some adorable old lady that was with him gave us a little money and said "Go to McDonalds on us".

Afterwards, we walked down to Oktoberfest and met his sister and her boyfriend (now husband) and some of their friends. We hung out there for a while, mainly resting our feet from all the excitement of the day, until the time for our reservation at Via Vite arrived. Matt had put notes in the reservation that we were celebrating our engagement and we received two glasses of champagne and our dessert for free!! It was such a wonderful time with wonderful food and service!!

Matt's next column was about proposing to me, so this is all in print from his point of view as well. :)

  • Here's mine from my bio:
We got engaged on March 16, 2010 in a very quiet way that greatly showed both of their personalities. As it was Scott's senior year in college and he was on spring break, I took a day off of work so we could have a day together to relax and do whatever they desired, as I was working 7 days/70 hours a week at the time. In the morning we got up and went to get coffee before heading over to Castle Island in South Boston to spend the morning walking along the water. It was actually a beautiful day for the fact it was still winter in Boston, getting up to about 70 that day! In the afternoon we bummed around getting a few things done at home in our new place, trying to make a really small place work for the 2 of us to live there for the next few years. That night we went into Boston to walk around the Boston Commons and then go out to dinner. Unknown to me (well sort of, I have to admit I started to figure things out the few days before that as he was planning and never plans like that!), Scott had an additional agenda besides walking and dinner. After walking around the Commons for about an hour we sat on one of the many benches in the park right near Frog Pond. We proceeded to watch young children, all around 5 years-old, ice skating; it was special for us as Scott teaches and coaches hockey and it's one thing he truly loves to do. While sitting there we began to talk and it was at that point I was definitely sure of what was going on. It took him quite a while to ask the question and in the meantime I kept thinking "I know what you're going to say, just say it!" Finally, after starting and stopping for close to an hour he very quietly and personally pulled a ring out of his pocket and proposed. It was picture perfect for both of us since neither of us really like to be in the spotlight and tend to enjoy keeping things privately between us. Making it all the more special is the fact that he used his grandmother's diamond and knowing just how much she meant to him, she was a second mother to him, it meant more then anything to me that I had the honor of wearing his grandmother's diamond on my engagement ring.

Midge I'm jealous of your awesome pictures!  The only pictures I ahve from the day are of my hand when we went to dinner after he proposed and one of us in the morning before he proposed. :)
  • Thanks Sleblanc! I'm so thankful he did that for us. He knows how much I love pictures. He even gave the guy his professional work camera knowing that he'd be able to edit the pictures to perfection. :)

    I love everyone's stories BTW!

Awww that's so sweet!!  Ya, I would have loved the photos but I'm also glad it was just between us with no one else around.
  • Long story short - at a restaurant with his family and my family there.
