I had to look up what Brill! meant, so first of all I'm a dork.  All of my knowledge comes from the internet, and to prove that I leaned how to type before I leaned how to write because my dad was a computer geek.  Although the internet didn't really exist then, it was just DOS.
I'm 22; I'm engaged; I'm currently unemployed because no one has called me back after my interviews yet and I just moved back from Chicago to the STL.   And I'm totally not into the whole huge wedding thng, but I fall in love with everything pretty I see.

[QUOTE]I mean, I think it's awesome that you can brown stuff on the stove in the same pot and then transfer it to the stove.... But would I put it in my registry? Hell to the no. We have some pricier stuff on there like a stand mixer and a couch, so I'm not innocent, but something about that is just ridiculous. I bet it's almost exactly the same as the $50 one. I think it's interesting how so many people feel like they HAVE to have top-of-the-line, chef-quality cookware. Unless you're a gourmet foodie, you probably won't even be able to tell the difference from a mid-line product.

Poli - We had some more expensive things on ours, like a Kitchen Aid stand mixer and I think our cookware was $400.  But we both didn't have very established houses - hers is furnished with Ethan Allen furniture.

Exactly! And if you want to slow cook something after browning it on the stove, it's called a dutch oven... although those can get pricey too.

we see people on here all the time that want to find some way to spread the word that they would prefer cash, or whatever because they've set up a household and have what they need. invariably, they are chided "who couldn't use an upgrade on stuff you already have?"

based on what was said in op, it sounds like someone did what this board would have suggested. but that's wtf-worthy too. hmph.

Exactly, sucrets. I can see wanting to upgrade certain things, but stuff like that? It just seems like she put in there because she "should" want top-of-the-line everything.

FI moved in together straight from college. Our nicest kitchen implement is a 25-year-old crock pot my mom gave us :) Everything we have is either from a garage sale, family hand-me-down, or the sale section at Target! I'm excited to have a grown-up kitchen :)

ETA: Jill, it seems like the issue is that she doesn't actually use the stuff. It's one thing to ask for really nice stuff that you'll need, but another to put really expensive stuff on there that you don't plan on using.

She seriously doesn't eat fat.  ANY fat.  She was talking about it at Christmas and how she's now getting her FI's sons onto her 'diet'.

Btw, she really looks like she belongs with one of his sons instead of him.  Not that he's bad looking, but if you looked at the table and had to pick who went together, you wouldn't guess the two of them.

I'm so full of judge tonight, but I'm cranky and just don't care.

Daff, my main point is that it's not like she has friends and family dying to give her a shower.  Her mom is grasping at straws trying to figure out who to invite since she has no friends (from my aunt's mouth, not mine).  I just don't get registering for super expensive things when 1. you don't automatically get a shower just because you're getting married and 2. it's not like people are really going to be able to pitch in for a bunch of stuff.

I'd honestly rather give her $ in this situation since I think they can use it more, but I can't exactly give that for a shower.  So it puts me in a shitty situation of giving a $40 measuring cup/spoon set and looking cheap or getting something nicer.

ETA:  and I will reiterate that she will DEFINITELY get cash and checks at her wedding since that is what is done in my area.  We got 1 real present and a billion envelopes, so it's not like she has to spread the word about that or insinuate it from the registry.

Oh, and ditto Poli about her not using the expensive stuff. I think it's weird and excessive.

  • When my friend moved in with his girlfriend right out of highschool, she ran off and spent the day at BB&B and racked up a registry with over $3000 worth of random shiit on it.  They had a house(apartment?)warming to which EVERYBODY was invited, got 3 dishtowels (despite her constant myspace bulletins about the registry) and she passed out drunk in their kitchen sink.

They didn't even have couches and their bed was a matress on the floor.  But damnit if that juicer wasn't super important.

This is my coworker, exactly.  She doesn't.cook.at.all.  She manages to burn water somehow.  Seriously.  So, imagine my surprise when one day she was talking about all this fancy Pampered Chef stuff she has at home.  The really specialty items that are generally used for a very specific purpose.  I'm thinking, "what do you use any of this stuff for?  You don't cook!"  She said she always thinks she's gonna try, but she hates veggies, won't touch raw meat or even want to look at it, ect.  Makes me shake my head.

And, I will admit to having the $40 measuring cup set.  It's All-Clad right?  In my defense, I really like the odd size set and that it's all metal.  Every other set I've had, the plastic has melted or the measurement designations have rubbed off after a year or so.  I love my measuring cups.

BG - you don't understand.  I love getting the updates from my mom...it makes me feel incredibly sane and appreciate my family.

This is the same aunt who told my cousin's FI that "if he wants to play with little girls, he can play with his 13 year old daughter".  Yes, to his face.  He's in his 40s and is older, but my cousin is 34!  She's not exactly a kid.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Are you f*cking kidding me??? (WR!) : BG - you don't understand.

Whoa, that's pretty inappropriate! Yeah, I think once you're past 25 or 30, a 10 year age difference is not that big of a deal anymore. Your aunt seems awfully protective of her widdle girl. I can see how you'd feel better about your own family, haha!
