June 2012 Weddings

What are you doing with your dress after the wedding?

I know now a lot of brides sell their dress after the wedding. What are you ladies planning on? I am undecided right now what I am going to do.

Re: What are you doing with your dress after the wedding?

  • I had been planning on selling it. My FI doesn't want me to sell it. Neither does my mom, she thinks I should hold onto it incase someone I know has a shotgun wedding and wants to borrrow it lol apparently that happened to someone she knows.

My mom held onto her dress for about 28 years and just recently threw it away. It was so dated. I know 30 years from now I'll be in the same place. Why hold onto it for all that time?

[QUOTE]I am really tempted to do a trash the dress shoot, without completely destroying it( I love the beach shots people get!).  If I can get it dry cleaned and back in great shape, then I would consider selling it.

I've also always wanted to do this so at least after the wedding I'll definitely be keeping it to do this but after that I'm not sure what I would want to do.  Part of me really likes the idea of being able to help someone that can't necessarily afford a new dress but part of me wants to keep it.
  • I will be keeping mine. My mom got her's preserved and it's in her closet. I'll probably do the same.

  • I just got my dress yesterday and was thinking the same thing. I doubt I will sell it though. But now I need to find somewhere to store it afterwards cause it is soooo long.

I don't think I could sell it. I know some people make a Christening gown out of the dress, which I think is really sweet. Not sure I'd do that either because we have an heirloom one in my family.

  • Right now I would say my answer is "not a chance," but I marked undecided because I really never know.

I'm also not opposed to the idea of having family members wear it in future years, in which case I would definitely hold onto it :)

<div>That's exactly the picture that I was thinking of when I posted that.</div>
  • I love the idea of my daughter one day playing in my dress. But at the same time I have a really hard time keeping things that don't have a purpose. For me keeping my dress in a closet for 30 years almost seems like a waste. I just don't know what I am going to do yet.
  • Right now I plan on altering mine.  I'm thinking about cutting it shorter and making it into a great cocktail dress.  With the fabric that gets cut I really have no idea what I'll do with it right now.
    image
  • I can't fathom having it sit in a closet.  Six women made that dress.  A lot of recourses went into it.  I want it to have more than one day of use.

I don't know how at this point, but my dress is not sitting in a box.  I have a lot of photog friends who do wedding inspiration shoots and workshops.  One has already suggested that I rent it out for her shoots.  I'm considering.

I think that would be a great idea.
  • As of right now I'm keeping it. I'd love to give my daughter (providing I have one) a chance to wear it some day, or at least play dress up with it. I only paid $99 for it, so I don't think it's worth selling. Besides, I'm also one of those people who has a hard time throwing away clothes even if they're too big for me.

I never thought of that. I really like that idea.
  • From the beginning I wanted to sell my dress, because I feel like it is pointless to let it sit in my closet forever and ever.  My mom and sister said that I will regret selling it though.  I answered undecided as of right now.

Whhat? Those pictures are so disturbing and kind of funny! I think there are some better/more tasteful trash the dress pictures out there. I've seen some in the water, on a beach or just outside in nature where it can get a little dirty...I've also seen some fun sessions with paint and bright colors!

Haha! I've never seen pictures like that before. A lot of couple go out and do nature shots (where they can get the dress a little dirty, without trashing it). Sometimes they'll do beach shots (maybe a little in the water, but not like drowned zombies). Of course, some of them actually do completely trash their dresses, like in those pictures.

Most of the "trash the dress" sessions around here are pretty normal...they aren't about destroying the dress, but about taking pictures in locations where the dress might be dirty and not getting upset about it.

I've seen people in fields, in trees, on fences...

Okay so I am going to revise my answer - I just emailed my photog to find out their prices, they said if I am not looking to destroy my dress, they call it "Rock the Dress".  Maybe search that, the photos are a little more pleasant :)

I cannot get photos to attach for some reason...but something more along the lines of these: (not my photog)
