May 2013 Weddings

New to TK

Hello everyone. My name is Tarren and I am getting the feel of this wedding website business. I wasn't to into it because I am not a girly girl and my wedding wasnt until august 2013, But my FH decided to change it to May. So here I am asking/pleading for advice. I have no idea where to start or what to consider. I know I have a lot of time but I feel overwhelmed. Thank you.

Re: New to TK

  • Welcome! I wasn't that into planning either but once I got started I love it.

Tell us about you and your FI :)

Start with budget and possible guest list. That's what I did first. My planning bio and rdr's planning bio have great checklists in them that are helpful. (I got mine from her)

  • My FI is a police officer of four years and a divorced father of two. I personally will never get divorced but I must say I'm happy he did because now he is all mine :). He knows how to do this wedding stuff and has kind of been helping. Our budget and guest list is set and that is where I'm stuck lol. When ever I ask his opinion all he says is its up to you sweetheart its your day. I could smack him sometimes.
  • Welcome. :) May is turning out to be a pretty popular month. This is my 2nd and my FI's first wedding. I have just recently turned all planning (the big things) over to him. Im doing the fun stuff, cake, dresses, colors and little details. :)

Hi there & welcome!  It's easy to get overwhelmed but remember you have plenty of time to get everything done :)

After we came up with our budget & had a rough estimate of how many guests we'd be inviting, I started researching venues on TK & WW (WeddingWire).  When I found one I liked the looks/sounds of, I emailed them & asked for packages & pricing info.  If they were totally out of budget I deleted the email immediately & if they were within budget I filed them into a folder in my email account.  I showed FI the ones in our budget & we picked ones we wanted to see in person.  We looked at 13 different venues before we found ours.  When we did, we booked through the caterer (not all venues are run this way but my wedding is at a winery & you bring in your own caterer) & our date was set!

Once we booked the venue, we went through a similar process with the photographer, except it was easier because we booked the first person we met with.

Most recently, we booked our DJ which was also easier than the venue because we booked the same DJ that my friend used at her wedding since we had seen them in person.

    I hope this helps!

  • Congrats and Welcome to TK!  Its good to browse through magazines or surf the net looking for checklists.....suggestions at the the 1yr check point...then the 6 month check point....4 month check point......etc.  It helped me out on what I should do first.   Then everything else falls in place.
    Good luck and enjoy!
  • Hi there! Welcome!  After setting the budget and guest list, it's time to find a venue to set a date.  I also searched the internet and made a list of all the venues I liked the look of.  Then I sent away for price lists. If I couldn't afford it, I took it off the list.  The ones I thought I could afford, I priced EVERYTHING out and took it with me when we visited the venues to make sure I hadn't missed any fees.

  • Congrats and welcome! First I'd figure out your potential ceremony & reception venues, because honestly- you can't really do anything else until that's cemented. I'd also have a rough number for your guest list.

I'd really research your options to figure out where and how you can get the best deal for what you want and the size of your guest list. I'd really utilize your local boards for vendor recommendations.

  • I would definitely take rdr's advice!!!

We were engaged for 8 months before I started any real planning everythign was just talk ... I looked online at venues and what was within budget I made appts for us to see ... after 5 venues we found the one we loved, well FI fell in love first with me it took a second time going there but of all the places we looked it was the best!!! Our place provides the food and alcohol which I am sooo greatful for lol that's basically all we are at at this point ... I am currentlyresearching DJ's, photographers, and florists.
