Time for another, you know what really grinds my gears?

Re: Time for another, you know what really grinds my gears?

  • I got the related, "But you don't have kids, so OF COURSE you wouldn't understand!" from a parent of a student in my class a few years ago. And it wasn't even over an issue, it was on a beginning of the year survey. Boy, it's nice to meet you too...
  • I don't know if this is common where you guys live too. But I notice that instead of kids standing out at the bus stop, parents will park their cars at the bus stop and the kids will wait inside the car. And not just when it's cold - I see this year 'round. FI and I live in literally one of the safest areas in the country (it's been voted in the top 3 safest places to live more than once) so it doesn't seem like a safety thing. I just seems to weird to me. Why can't those kids wait out at the bus stop? They're not standing out on main roads either.
  • On the parents driving their kids to school note..

I live in a condo complex and one woman NEVER walks her daughter to the end of our driveway to wait for the bus; or when she picks her kid up from the bus.  It is not more than 200 feet, stop blocking the driveway asshole.

  • My annoyance also stems from the fact that the parents can walk with their children but don't.  We live in a crappy world with child abductions, and that sucks, but why is that preventing parents from walking with their kids down the street to school?  Why do they have to drive?  And after a certain age (say 10), the kids should be able to walk a little ways with less of a fear of abduction.  Mommy can't hold their hand forever.

  • My biggest current issue is when I send out communications (usually work related) and people respond asking questions that I've already answered.  I try to be really positive and nice, but remind them to read what I've sent out previously that answers the question.  But it REALLY annoys me.

I tried walking with FI's son the first few weeks of school. He called a family meeting explaining it was embarrassing and that my time could be better spent doing homework, cooking, and cleaning lol. We live in a really small town and there are no main roads he needs to worry about so we caved...and now I get the wrath of his friends mother

That sucks - you can't win!

  • And here's another thing that pisses me the eff off. It's snowing today. Nothing crazy. They're calling for 3-5 inches. The roads will most likely be clear by the time we leave. And my assistant is telling me she's going to have to leave 30 minutes early. This girl lives 15 minutes away.

No I really can't :( I've decided it's more to do with me being a soon to be step mom. All the REAL moms have been horrid to me since day one...the only one who likes me is another stepmom.

we're getting the same in MASS and I left at noon hahaha

It's not my fault- I used to live on the west coast so I don't have an appropriate snow/ awd vehicle yet. Last storm I spun out on the state's biggest highway and it seriously traumatized me. Now I have severe anxiety attacks about driving in the snow so I had to leave work early. But I am working from home!

At least you're working from home! :-P
  • Can I add a "grinds my gears"? All of the above. Plus, there is this phenomenon in my city where people forget how to ride a bus during non rush hour. During rush hour? Everyone fills in the seats quickly and then fills back to front so everyone can get on. Saturday night? Nope, you can't split up groups!! Meanwhile we can't move while people struggle to board. Monday night after a b-ball game? I told off these guys who were clogging the middle of the bus. It was so packed up front that people, out in the cold snow, couldn't board. I watched these jerks observe the chaos and meanwhile we're not moving. I said, "if you guys just moved back here so many more people could get on!!" They replied, "uh yeah I guess we can move back." Problem solved, jerkwads. I'm normally not confrontational but jerks with rocks for brains Grind My Gears!!

    What grinds my gears:

People who invite their entire FB friends list to an event.  If I live 1,000 miles away from you, no, I'm not coming to your event.  Why did you invite me?  Oh yea, I know, because you're too lazy to go through your guest list and only invite the people who might actually be able to attend and/or care.

Also, people who re-friend after you deleted them.  I went on several short-term service/mission trips when I was in high school and college.  I friended most of the people in my group and I was friends while on the trip, but we live all across the country and were only together for a few weeks so we just didn't become BFFs.  So a few weeks after the trip, once we were all done uploading pictures and tagging each other, contact dropped.  I see their updates but don't ever like them or comment on them.  (I should add, I don't post much on FB - less than once a week and I don't comment or like stuff very much either.)

So anyway, I regularly purge my friends list of people I don't know.  And about 1.5 years or so after one of these trips, I deleted most of the people.  But there's this one girl who re-friended me.  I don't get it!  She has almost 500 FB friends!  Why and how in the world is she keeping such close tabs on me that she realized, within a week, that I had un-friended her?!?!  Kinda creepy actually. We haven't seen each other or communicated in any way, shape or form in over three years.

I dont blame you for leaving early, it can be scary when you are not familiar with snow but what makes a appropriate snow vehicle? AWD does not make much difference when driving on snow covered roads. Experience will be the most helpful.
  • I think the only thing that really stuck out to me that I heard was bad luck was to put on your wedding band. I told my friend how my FI and I sometimes sit for a couple hours at home with our bands on and she was like, "THAT'S BAD LUCK!" I was in complete shock that she said that.

Snow tires help too. We have an Outback and a Honda S2 with snow tires and a Saturn S2 with all season tires. The Honda with snow tires beats the Saturn.
  • What's grinding my gears right this second are people in other departments at work who refuse to understand how long it takes me to accomplish certain tasks. There are standard timeframes for things, and there's no way you can give me a week's worth of work and expect it done by noon tomorrow (especially when it's not end-of-quarter critical). My computer and my brain do not work that fast. UGH.

Did you not read where I said I moved here from the west coast? I bought a stupid little front wheel drive coupe a few years ago THINKING I was going to live in the desert my whole life. Had I known that I'd be here, I would have gotten an AWD SUV with snow tires, which I plan to trade mine in for next fall but can't afford it yet.

My boss is really understanding though, and like I said I get work done from home on my laptop, I'm just an accountant I'm not saving lives lol

My FI's ex from high school did the whole re-friend thing with me recently and I'm just confused as to why, she hates me XD  (Before I say anything else I'll mention my issue with her is NOT just that she's an ex- He and I still hang out with one of his other exes and I consider her a really good friend, she's awesome, and will definitely be invited to the wedding) Anyways in addition to hating me her Facebook news feed is nothing but notifications when she listens to Taylor Swift on Spotify an updates on every time she loses a single pound.  And she's not a large girl, it's not like her losing weight updates are us watching this awesome transformation, it's more like "I lost a pound today, the one bagel a week diet works!"  I deleted her because literally everything she posted was something I did not care about whatsoever.  Then she refriended me :P  Who keeps tabs on someone they don't even like so closely that they'd notice them going missing from a 200+ friend's list?

  • Overpopulation of SELFIES on my FB Newsfeed grinds my gears. Especially if they are formatted with those pic stitch things...
Why do I need to see 4 versions of someone in 1 post?

There is a really sweet girl I know but she is a selfie overloader. All with the same face. They really all look like the exact same picture of her just with a different shirt on in each one.

Also how the new 'duck face' is a fake surprise/caught off guard face.

I think your situation is totally understandable but unless you're leaving out details like you had no choice in the move, the blame for lacking the appropriate winter vehicle isn't on the shoulders of someone else.

In all seriousness, a FWD car can do well if you have snows. I've lived in CT my entire life and I was 30 before I drove a cat with AWD.
  • @aefitz29-you beat me to it, that's kind of what I was thinking! ;)

Driving cats is better than cars anyway!

You know what's really grinding my gears today? The fact that it isn't Friday yet...
  • This week sucks. I've been a day ahead of myself all week. I keep thinking it's Friday.
  • My Honda Accord coupe is pretty darn awesome in the snow (the anti lock brakes and traction control help a lot too). We don't get the same kind of snow amounts that you guys up north get, though. My car sits so low that I start having trouble if we get more than about 5-6 inches, but that's not all that common. We don't get enough or frequent enough snow to make snow tires sensible, though, and studded tires aren't legal here. @xmobergx , is there someone who could take you out in your car sometime, like to an empty parking lot, and work with you on your snow driving? If you're planning on living there for a period of time, there's no better way to learn what to do than to actually do it. I still hate driving on snow because I just don't get that much experience with it, and I don't trust anyone around me. A FWD car can work just fine in snow, but you might need to add some weight to help get traction. And it really grinds my gears when people say stuff and then refuse to take responsibility or the consequences for what their words create.
