  • It's a shame I have to go to work now, cause I really want to start drinking.

Came home to a wedding invitation from an old "family friend" of FI. Knew it it was coming and already anticipating a shit show because said friend is a hot, hot mess. But I had NOOOOO idea just how bad it was going to be. Grab a glass of wine, sit back and behold this etiquette train wreck….

    1. Back of the envelop has a sticker that says they messed up on the postage so peeps will need to add an extra stamp to cover the mailing of the RSVP.
(defendable since postage just increased, but tacky nonetheless)
    2. First thing in the envelope is a 5x7 photo of the bride and groom ~ engagement photo perhaps??
(it's actually a decent pic, but screams AW)
    3. Invitation states it's a 6 pm ceremony and no mention of reception &/or dinner afterwards, but…
    4. There is an insert that states "no children under ten/cocktail attire/there will be a cash bar available"
(surely they are feeding guests, given said cash bar...right??)
    5. Second insert is their registry information
(yes, we'll get you a gift. no need to fret)
    6. and a THIRD insert stating that in lieu of gifts, they have chosen to register for gift certificates to their venue to 'help them make their wedding the most special day in their lives'!!
(so you want a gift. no, wait…you want a gift card…no, wait….you want us to pay for your wedding??)

Now, I know I'm new on TK, and I am **FAR** from an etiquette guru, but in my short tenure I've learned a looooot and I know that there is so, so, SO much wrong here...I'm not sure if I should laugh or cry? Really, I think I should pat myself on the back for trying my damnedest to host a wedding that is worthy of our guests, and thank all you wonderful Knotties who have unknowingly helped to guide me in planning and see the etiquette light. IOU all a stiff drink.

ETA - sorry about funky formatting

This doesn't scream AW to me.  Every invitation I've ever gotten has included a picture of the B&G.  We sent a 4x6 photo with our 5x7 invitations.

I would think people, especially extended family or old friends, who maybe can't come would love to see the photo.

  • Omgomgomg. I'll be sitting at my SS's wedding on Saturday, checking for updates on this wedding. Yay!

  • What exactly are the gift cards going towards, exactly? The rented chairs? We know not alcohol. Maybe the non-alcoholic drinks. We're not even sure there will be food... Maybe the bride's second wedding?

This! I totally broke not one, but TWO glasses at my college roommate's wedding. Not even drunk, just bad luck…and my bubble butt. Pretty embarrassing. Glad I'm not the only one.

Anyone remember this "Hello Kitty/help me pay for our wedding/cash bar/may or may not be dinner train wreck of wedding" post from earlier this year?

Well guess what Saturday is?? Shit show time! My camera battery is charging and we've stocked up on granola bars. Game ON!
    YAY!!! Keep us updated!!!

  • This is the most exciting thing that will happen to me this weekend.

I'm not sure if I should be eager or depressed.
  • So they sent invites almost 4 months out, shocker!

Can't wait to hear about this.

Really? My parents, FI, and I (in whatever configuration was appropriate for where I was in my life) have received well over 50 wedding invitations, and none have ever had a photo. In the thank you card, yes, but haven't gotten one in an invitation before.

  • I think the photo invitation thing is relatively new, i.e. since digital cameras make it a lot cheaper & easier to make a zillion copies of photos. I also think it is part of the trend of narcissism- "today is about the BRIDE and groom!" Like all the cute pinterest ways of displaying your "story" on decorations or putting your pictures all over the place (baby pictures etc.). I don't disagree with the idea that weddings should be about the couple...'s marriage & new life together, but I think it gets pretty ridiculous to assume that your guests are really interested in this:

And if they are interested, they probably already know!

I find it hilarious that pretty much everything on this chalkboard is supernormal. They mention watching sports like three times. At least if you're going to do one of those, I would hope that you met while scuba diving, climbed Mount Everest together, rescued another climber suffering from hypothermia, and then sailed around the world. That I might read.

I haven't received that many. We've received 6 or 7 and all of them have had photos.  Personally, I really like seeing the photo and putting it on my fridge, especially if they're close friends (and if I'm invited to the wedding, I usually am.)

    Different strokes, I guess.
  • And let the updates BEGIN!

FB status update just posted by bride (at 11:00 am MT): In 6 hours I'll be married!!!

…ummmm, the wedding starts at 6:00 pm. Math is either off or they are getting hitched before the guests show up. Oy vey.

Is it sad I don't even know my own dates/things on half of those mentioned above?

I've been attending weddings since the 70's.  Never received a photo of the couple in the invite.  STD?  Yes.  A few TY notes?   Yes.  Invites?  NEVER.   And those pictures we did get were small.  I have no need for a 5x7 picture of a couple.  I have a few 4x6 pictures of some family around.   But even then it's limited.  5x7 takes up a lot of space.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Me, too. As a hobby photographer, I looooove pictures, but I have no use (or space) for a 5x7 shot of an engaged couple. The one sent with this particular invite is sitting at the bottom of a junk drawer.

the different usernames confused me at first.  LOL

For the record, my own engagement picture is a 4x6 and that is up in the spare bedroom.

How is the weather out your way? It's pretty crappy here.

Oops - forgot that the user name switch could be confusing. It was only a nickname, but figured better safe than sorry given the crazies who have been popping up around these parts as of recent.

It's not bad down here yet, @Lyndausvi. Overcast and cool, but dry. Gus is pissed - he had planned to pass the afternoon sunbathing on the deck. News just said to expect 4 - 9 inches in the metro area. I'm predicting either 2 or 12…crazy spring storms. I'm going to be so mad if this damn wedding is outside and we freeze our asses off.

What are y'all getting up there?

  • We just have passing showers right now.  Suppose to continue throughout tonight and tomorrow.    "Problem" when it comes to the weather is we are in the same county as Vail.  Sometimes the warnings for our county are really directed to them and not us.  It seems like we will get the rain, then it goes over the mountain and dumps snow on them.
