When did you get around to changing your name?

A post on the Paris PPD thread just made this question pop into my head - also, slow day at work ;)

If you changed your name, when did you do it?  We're leaving on our honeymoon the day after the wedding, so I'll have to wait until we're back to change it. It kind of bugs me that I have to wait.

Re: When did you get around to changing your name?

  • I haven't changed mine yet, but I'll be doing the paper work before our honeymoon since we're not going on our honeymoon until a week after the wedding. I won't mail the paper work until we get back from our honeymoon though which is also a week long. So, 2 weeks after the wedding I will submit the paperwork, providing I have our marriage license by then. All of our honeymoon stuff is in my name, so I'm not in a hurry to change everything immediately.

  • I changed mine after we got back from our HM. The city clerks office said it take about 10 business days to process our marriage certificate. So I waited about 15 business days to be safe, went on got cerfitied copies of our marriage license. I went to the SS office that week. It was a pretty painless process. Surprisingly, changing my name on on frequent flyer miles was the biggest pain.

  • I started the process as soon as I got home from the HM (3 weeks after the wedding).  I did that for practical reason though.   The boat was out of the water so I had off anyway.  I needed to renew and/or acquire  some gov't issued credentials so it made way more sense to get it all done at once.

In the case of my passport,  It was to expire in Nov. However SA will not let you into the country if your passport expires less than 6 months (Sept wedding/HM). On top of that I used my passport on a weekly (or more) basis.  So I can't just send it off.  In June before the wedding I was in the states and I renewed it in Philly the same day.   Now they will do a name change for free within a year of the getting the passport.   So I rushed all the name changing so I could get the name change for free and still have my passport back in time for boat season. If I didn't get it done then my next window would have been September but then I would have had to pay more.

I changed it as soon as we got our marriage certificate- about a week after the wedding. I did it that fast because my mother was having serious medical problems and wrote my married name on all of her documents.  I wanted to make sure my name matched just in case something happened.  I still continued to use my passport with my maiden name on it up until it expired, over a year later. (Actually it was only 1 trip, I didn't use it everyday lol) I just made sure to book using that name.

  • I wasn't sure if you could use your old passport. That's good to know. Although I'll be able to change mine for free, I think, since it'll be under a year old.
  • I started changing my name about 4 months after my August 2012 wedding. It took that long to get my marriage cert. However, I am still changing it! I had a work related e-mail account changed just yesterday!

  • I waited until I had a day off of work to go to the social security office and DMV.  It was about a month and half.  After that I started changing my bank accounts, credit cards, work information, etc.  I got married in August and still haven't changed my passport.  I'll probably change that over the next month now that we have a trip in mind.
  • I started the process after I got back from my HM.  I really wasn't in any rush and I figured it would take a few days to get my new SS card so that I could then change my license and everything else.

And just because you get married doesn't mean that your name changes automatically.  You will still have the same name so you can still use your current passport/license to travel.

I still have credit cards and things that are in my maiden name that I will get around to changing one day but now the name really has no bearing on those things.

  • I started the process as soon as I got a copy of my marriage certificate (late June).  I did SS and DMV the same day and then I had to wait about 3 weeks until I had the new drivers license to change my accounts.  I still have not changed my passport for we don't plan on using it anytime soon, but it is on my list of to-do's.

  • I'm still working on it. My social security card is changed. My DL is sort-of changed (DMV and I had an argument about whether I could do what I want to do. I can, but the DMV guy is for.dumb). My bank accounts are changed. Car insurance isn't. Work and work insurance is. Voter ID is.

Well it's suppose to be in your legal name.  If the name has changed so should the passport.   However, it's one of those things that pretty much goes unchecked.  As long as your ticket and/or visa matches your passport you are generally okay.

  • I'm not changing my name but my FI is. It takes a lot longer for men to go through a name change in my state so he has already started filling out paperwork and stuff and we're not getting married until August. Even though he's already started the people at the courthouse said it could take til January or February of next year.
  • I got married in September and still haven't changed my passport, but there are some extenuating circumstances involving the break in of our house in May.  I plan to change it eventually but I do have some time before I'll need it.  I changed everything else as soon as possible after the honeymoon.
  • I waited three or four months.  I was still unsure exactly what I wanted to do with my name.  Also, I didn't want to change it in the middle of the semester because my school email, username and my name on class rosters would change and it would be a pain.
  • I will be changing mine as soon as I have the necessary documents. We aren't having a honeymoon, and it would be local if we did, so I don't have to worry about passports and that stuff.
