How do you address envelopes? My friend is offended

My friend made a post on FB today. What are your thoughts on addressing envelopes to married couples? Isn't it etiquette to address the couple by the male's name? Or am I just old fashion? You know what I really can't stand?! When Steve* and I get mail and it's addressed: "Mr. and Mrs. Steve Smith." I'm sure gay couples…
