The Gemstone Debate

Re: The Gemstone Debate

  • hey y'all - I am for sure going to do some more research on rubies and sapphires for sure.

@vulpiepop - I am very rough on my hands. I work in dental offices and animal clinics. Constantly washing, gloving, getting messy, trying not to bang my hands too much situations. And I'm not much more gentle at home.
I know I'm going to talk to the jeweler about mid-low profile settings as opposed to the high profile ones.

  • Many less expensive shops sell laboratory grown rubies.  They are pretty, but do not hold the value of natural rubies.  Also many rubies and sapphires are "color enhanced".  Ask questions!

Your ring is STUNNING! I love the blue diamond!

This is not a cheaper option, but I love canary diamonds too... If it has a definite color to it, I love it.

I once was on a spiel to get then Fi to get a really low color diamond so that it DID look yellow. He ended up going in way the other direction.. Silly man and their "perfection" ideas.

  • Definitely agree with PPs on the ruby thing. Real rubies are expensive and there are some sleazy people that are passing off fakes as real. Ask questions, look at it through a magnifying glass if you know what to look for and if you can, see if they have a certificates or appraisal documents that they can show you (FI got one from the jeweler that made my ring; it has everything from where the stones were mined to how many carats, etc).

Ask where the gems were mines, if they're lab made, how durable, what alloy they mixed with the gold, etc. It doesn't hurt to ask too many questions but it does hurt not to ask before throwing down so much money for the ring.

OP, here's another idea. It doesn't solve the E-ring problem since you're very active with your hands.  Since my E-ring is large, I asked FI if I could get a second, inexpensive wedding ring to wear to the gym, out running, or to less-safe places (we live in a major city and like to travel too).
If I'm going to damage or lose a ring, I'd prefer it to be a $50 sterling silver piece than the platinum/gemstone creations.
I'm calling it my "placeholder".  Perhaps you could get something simple and inexpensive for work, and get whatever your heart desires for when you're not at work.

ETA: My dentist has a massive, blinding diamond creation on her hand. I guess if she's ok with it....!  Lol.

  • I might make one more suggestions here if you aren't set on a diamond - you might look into reputable antique stores and/or estate rings. If you're into history at all, it might be really cool to have a piece of it as your ring.

  • Man you guys are great!

And yes- one of the dentists I work with has a HUGE rock and she's ok with it, the other dentist I work with is the husband - but his wife has a huge rock also. But she doesn't work with her hands as much as he does.

  • I have a yellow sapphire surrounded by white sapphires. I adore it, and people always mistake it for a yellow diamond - including at jewelry stores! Yellow is my favorite color and I just didn't want a diamond, so this was perfect for me.
  • I love sapphires. Unfortunately, the first ring FI was drawn to for me was pretty much identical to a ring that an ex bought me. It's gorgeous but because of the connection, no sapphires for my ring finger. Fortunately, he's ok with me occasionally wearing it for dress up since it matches the sapphire earrings he bought me!

I love my ring but will want something with sapphires down the road!

  • I too don't have a white center stone, mine is a yellow diamond. I like it's unique-ness. I like the front and center attention that the yellow gets.

  • I have a morganite with a diamond halo/band. I also knew I didn't want a white diamond - and I love the color of morganite with rose gold with my skin tone.

  • I have a Forever Brilliant-enhanced moissanite in a low-profile setting. Love. It. I wanted something that would "fire" and this seriously does.

  • @KeptInStitches - that sounds like everything I want!!! And its beautiful!!! You love the fire from it?? I think I've only seen one in person so I'll have to look for that when I do see one again.

Did you get the stone from one of the moissanite websites or from a jeweler?? I've heard this is one where it is actually better to purchase via internet - and MoissaniteCo.com seems to be a fairly reputable website. . . . from what I've read thus far.

  • @LabLove86, I got mine from MoissaniteCo.com and had no problems with the purchase. The picture is in interior light - sunlight is much, much better.
