Hillbilly/redneck bride costume

Hi knotties, I'm getting married next Halloween so of course need to dress up as something bride-related for this Halloween.

I think I'm going to go as a "redneck bride" ... cowboy boots, lots of camo, trucker hat with a veil, bedazzled fake rifle, one of those solo cup-wine glass things. Does anyone have any other ideas?

PS-- totally not trying to offend anyone, just doing this to be fun. (I know it's actually a thing in some regions to wear camo for your wedding. I stumbled upon this site: http://camoformal.com/wedding.html which was... interesting.)

  • I think it's hilarious! You could also put your hair in pink sponge rollers and wear mismatched flip flops!
  • What if the veil was also orange tulle?

  • That is hilarious!  Can you carry around a stuffed animal doctored up so it looks like you just hunted and killed it in the woods?

You should work in a stupid poem to your costume somewhere.  Honeyfund jar?

"I'm not a rude bitch.  I'm ten rude bitches in a large coat."

  • Let me think on the suggestions.  I'm just blown away by that website!  How have I never heard of this before?

You could drag out some of the old stereotypes.  Color some teeth in black (I'm sure you can a real product for this at a costume store); have your hair in two braids (if it's long enough); include some reference to your FI being your brother, or other close relative.  I also recommend plaid and straw hats.

Sorry, not terribly imaginative on this one as I've never met anyone I would consider a hillbilly and most of what I do know of hillbilly culture comes from satirical websites, or is incredibly outdated (one of the many problems of having studied history).

  • Something like this should work well:

  • Get a trashy white dress (maybe even a white nighty) at walmart.  Stuff a beach ball under it.  Have a fake cigarette hanging out of your mouth and only drink cheap beer from a can all night.  Or just google "redneck bride."  So much good stuff!!

Also, it is not a "thing" in any region to be a trashy redneck.  Trashy rednecks can be found all across the US.  There are plenty of country and southern people that aren't horribly tacky.

    You win!

  • haha yes to all of these. Thanks girls!

  • OOOOOOOH my god.

All @lurkergirl's suggestions are great. Get the tackiest, cheapest, most obnoxious dress you can find, shove a beach ball in the middle, carry a can of Nasty Lite, get a HUGE, obviously fake ring, fake cigarette (although be careful - this might be a know your crowd thing. Some smokers might be offended by your accidentally associating them with redneckery), get some tooth black, put your hair in foam curlers or in ridiculous, uneven pigtails.

Camo ribbons if you wear pigtails. A camo bandanna if you wear curlers. Camo ribbon around the top of your beach ball pregnant belly. A camo garter peeking out under your dress if you get a short one. Cowboy boots. If you can get your hands on some antlers (deer shed them naturally although I don't recall if they shed them in the spring or fall; I think spring) I would glue them to a itty bitty Rudolph toy or something.

Dude. The thing is, all this shit. It's real life for some people. It's every day. Welcome to Podunk, Alabama.

  • What about outdated thrift store wedding dress?

  • Omg!  Love this look if your FI is doing a matching costume.  I'd call it bogan, but sometimes bogan and redneck are interchangeable.

  • Ok, I'm going to be the voice of reason here. This is offensive. You are essentially asking for help to design a costume that mocks a certain group of people. Bad idea. It's incredibly disrespectful. Also, it's a bit insulting to infer that hillbilly and redneck (which are not the same) automatically equals trashy. And if you have to add "I'm not trying to offend anyone", then you probably realize at least subconsciously that it is offensive.

If you really want to go as ____ bride, there are plenty of other ideas that don't involve mocking another group.

    1) Corpse bride
    2) Zombie bride
    3) Vampire bride (think Bride of Dracula- instant couple's costume as your FI can be Dracula)
    4) Bride of Frankenstein

I could come up with more, but you get the point.

I think this is a know your crowd thing. We threw a "white trash" party once (which was borderline this theme), and it was hilarious. The guest of honor had always referred to herself as white trash and she thought the party was a riot (the theme was a surprise to her).

I have redneck family. I have a cousin who totally had bedazzled boots and a cowboy hat on her wedding day, and that's just who she is. She is not a trashy person, and I would never dress up like she did with the intent of mocking her.

The OPs idea is over the top enough that no sane person in their right mind would do that.

But it's not really that over the top. It takes things associated with a specific group with the goal of putting them together to mock said group. If you were to take a stereotype from any other culture, it would be offensive.

There's a big difference between giving a party a theme specific to the guest of honor and dressing up for Halloween. So while your story is funny, it's not really relevant to discussing a Halloween costume.

  • Um...why is a pregnant bride trashy/tacky/hillbilly/redneck? Because what? We have proof the bride did the deed prior to getting hitched? Come on, are we all saying we're nice and virginal on our wedding days? Getting knocked up before getting married doesn't make you trashy any more then having sex before your wedding day makes you trashy (and we got a whole TMI thread that'd paint all of us as trashy if that were the case).

I did slutty bride once. I wore a really veil attached to a penis crown, a white nighty, thigh high fishnets, a garter, and some of highest stripper heels. It was fun, I was freezing my ass off by the end of the night and falling off my shoes, but it was fun. And I did an 80s bride too, just wore a dress I found at goodwill and an 80s wig.

Yeah, the pregnant bride part was the only thing that really skeeved me out, especially with the addition of the cigarette and beer. We don't need to imply that rednecks are terrible parents for it to be funny.

Just a redneck bride? Camo, trucker hat that says BRIDE in bling, cowboy boots, solo cup wine glass (honestly, pigtail braids aren't even a redneck thing anymore). You wanna go shotgun wedding, be a teen bride with a varsity jacket over your shoulders and a big fluffy cheerleader bow in your hair. Trashy bride with zebra print, mile long french tips, blue eyeshadow and a cigarette. 80's bride with giant puff sleeves and crimped hair. Virgin bride with a chastity belt with a giant padlock on it and a turtleneck under your dress. GFM bride with a sign around your neck and change jar asking for donations, plus a couple NASCAR-esque bumper stickers on your butt.

But when you mix all those things together, it just seems like you're trying to offend as many people as possible. More accurate mockeries are funnier, IMO.

So do you find Jeff Foxworthy's stand up to be offensive?

My point about the party is that OP probably knows the Halloween party guests better than you do. If my redneck cousins were attending a Halloween party, I wouldn't do the redneck bride costume. If the guest of honor was somehow ashamed of her past, we wouldn't have done the white trash theme. But this is something that the people present found funny and it was a hit.

Hell, I've seen plenty of pregnant nun costumes. I wouldn't exactly wear that costume to a church Halloween party.

    Seriously, RajahBMFD. Chill out.
