The stupid pintrest thing that you DID include in your wedding

Re: The stupid pintrest thing that you DID include in your wedding

  • Will DF's red hair win over my dang near black hair?
My sister has near black hair.  BIL is ginger.  Their 2 daughters are ginger.  Their son is near black.

Now my dad has red in his beard and on his arms.  Dad's brother had red hair, as did both his sons.     I'm also near black, but in the sun I get a lot of natural red highlights.  No one else does though.

So there is red in our genes.
Sigh. I stand in the sun, I go vampire. And not the fucking glitter fairy version. I burn up. My hair however laughs at me and stays dark as ever. Why do I get the pale skin but not the light hair. Not. Fair.
oh my dad is the same way.  Dark brown hair, dark brown eyes.  Burns just thinking of the sun. The man is really pale.     My sister use to be really dark too.  When we lived in TX they thought she was Mexican.  Now she is really pale.

Even though all my ancestors come from Ireland, I tan quite nicely. Just like my mom.  Nice olive skin, with freckles.  Lots of freckles.   When I lived in the islands my hair got really light naturally.    I've been told I'm black irish.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Okay I googled related gifs to that image and also almost peed at this picture

I just pooped my pants. Hahahaha

  • I'm not 100% on my ancestors. Near black hair - ok, the deposit dyes that are black don't make a noticeable change at all, light green/blue/gray "sea glass" eye color, vampire pale skin.

Alas I love anything warm and sunny. Can you buy SPF 100 in 5 gallon drums?
  • Um... The ombre on our cake didn't QUITE turn out, but it was tasty, and there was enough for about 100 more people. I told MIL we didn't need that much cake, but she was all "It's your freaking wedding! You need all the cake!"
    image
I also DIY'd the tissue paper flowers for our bouquets, which may or may not be a Pinteresty thing. The hearts on a string thing... That was all MIL, I had no idea about it until I walked in on the day, but it worked okay.

We had the BM carry the rings on a book. My grandparents couldn't make the trip, so I used one of the books that my oupa gave me (one of his favourite poetry books) and it was like they were there.
    image
Photog also did a pic of the rings on a piano keyboard, and I have no idea why since DH doesn't play, and I haven't played since high school. We didn't ask him to, he just did it. I guess because they were all getting ready at BM's house and he plays, so there was a piano there?

The waxpaper backdrop was a super Pinterest move.
    image

Our tables were named after authors (Dickens, Wilde, Anderson, Austen, Pratchett), and the table names were in mismatched frames, some of which were "vintage-y". And our centerpieces were book towers tied with ribbon. Another Pinterest thing.
    image
And yes, there are birds all over the freakin' place because apparently I am a hipster. I both love and am horribly afraid of birds, but they're kinda my thing.

MIL also surprised us with "Hooray" sticks. Little wooden dowel thingies, with ribbons and bells, and "Hooray" flags on them. Not really my thing, but again, I didn't know anything about it until I walked into the venue on the day. So the photog insisted we do this Pinterest-y picture:
    image
I'm not mad though because the sandstone wall behind us is a pretty distinctive feature of the town where we got married, and we don't really have any other photos that one could look at and go "Oh, that's there!" Also, my dad's family used to have a beach house (way back before the economy went screwy) and whenever anyone in the family got married or had a baby or anything, we'd all line up on/around the wall for a picture, so I feel like a tradition was upheld - even though my dad and his family are no longer in my life.

Oh, and our favours were also our place cards, which were bookmarks that I designed. I was going to do a typewriter guest book, but I kept forgetting to ask MIL if she still had a typewriter in storage, and then I just kinda forgot about the guest book altogether, so we don't have one.

For someone who hates Pinterest and has spent maybe two hours total on the site (not counting work, when I was an SMM), I seem to have a heck of a lot of Pinterest crap in my wedding. I'm so ashamed.

  • In my defense, I originally found this on some other website. But later I found it on pinterest. And I totally did it for my place cards. I like to paint. Whatever.

I am now super irritated with myself for buying table numbers already. Maybe I can do that with the escort cards. Hmmmmm.

  • My venue is called The Stables. It's an old Polo field in a fancy neighborhood. It's every rustic chic lover's dream.

For our wedding I made glittered table numbers, they turned out well.  We also weren't allowed candles in our ceremony venue so we "tied the knot" and I found some inspiration for that online.  It was different and fun and we made it work for who we are.  And lastly... we did a sparkler farewell at the end of the reception because you know, pictures.  The pictures didn't turn out well, but our friends semed to have fun with it.  IMO I wish I hadn't wasted the time or money on it even though it wasn't a lot.

  • My step mom is recently OBSESSED with pinterest. I know we're not supposed to ask for anything related to our bridal shower, but when she asked if I'd rather have a "rustic chic" or a "vintage-y" shower, I knew that if I chose the first I'd get burlap EVERYWHERE. I absolutely loathe burlap.

So far she has suggested: Flower girls holding sign saying "[Fi name], here comes your bride", cutesy names with signs for sig drinks, "pick a seat not a side", unity ceremony, more chalkboard signs, sparkler sendoff, and others I just can't think of right now.

I will be having one sign over our escort cards that says, "Time to drink champagne and dance on the tables". That's my only downfall. She is telling guests we're having a "Gatsby themed wedding" because we're giving champagne as favors and our colors are black, white/ivory, and metallics. Sure stepmom. Whatever you say.

It was really fun to do! I made about 140 and painted them all within a couple hours. And thanks to the way watercolors are, even when you mess up, it just turns out even better :)

  • Guilty of the brooch bouquet too...  It is really gorgeous and it's a forever momento.

  • I'm having a destination wedding, so I can't do too much crafty stuff because I can't fit it in my suitcase, but one thing I am taking with me (that was purchased, not made) are little bride and groom signs for FI and I to hang on the back of our chairs at our reception dinner after the wedding. They're light and small enough to fit in my suitcase. Other than that, I don't have anything super pinteresty in my wedding.

I do love Pinterest though, and crafting non wedding stuff :)

  • Well damnit my work is blocking all the pics so I can't see the cutie redhead babies!

Honestly, I think the only Pinterest items I had were the lantern centerpieces and on the card table 6 frames of parents'/ grandparents' wedding photos.

And mason jars on the table and wooden cut outs:

And my favorite was the mason jar display with my dad's antique blue mason jars and crates my FIL built:

Love all of this! Especially the wood slabs.. very cool.

  • Thanks @plainjane0415! The wooden cut outs came from our farm and my brother cut them and sanded then down for me.

  • OMG I FORGOT ABOUT THE WOOD! We did that too. At the request of H's mom's BFF, who made our cakes. She actually had her husband cut them down on her farm and then showed them to us. They were SO lovely but we already had a cupcake holder purchased, so.... we put champagne glasses on them which was cute. But she did have my H's grandfather cut ANOTHER piece from the family farm, and the day of our wedding she went out and collected greenery from around the pond where our proposal was (this is in December, I was so impressed at how much greenery she found) to put around the groom's cake. It was SO pretty. And soooooooo pinterest. And I LOVED IT. And as soon as I get the pics back I will show them. There will be such an AW moment!
  • Does it count if my mom went on a Pinterest bonanza and not me personally....?

I had a slight travel theme going on for my wedding, so my card box was a vintage suitcase decorated with faux-vintage luggage tags. The suitcase came from my parents' attic.

She made my bouquet and we almost went with a broach bouquet and had a million relevant pins, but in the end we just did something far simpler.

  • Guilty on so many counts. But honestly, I don't care, My wedding was beautiful and amazing and we had the best day ever...so if anyone judges us and doesn't want to be my friend anymore because I had some burlap and lace (GASP) then so be it.

Our floral décor on the staircase in the venue's entryway, yes, that's burlap AND lace:

    image

Holy shit it's a chalkboard!imageOur cake was totally inspired by Pinterest.image

    Mason jars AND shepherd's hooks...sweet Jesus!image

I made the flowergirl basket and ring box based on some inspiration from Etsy, which might as well be Pinterest at times. This was one of my few DIY projects.image

    image

Our gourmet cookie favors came in kraft paper boxes:

    image

I also exchanged the white chandeliers at the venue for large black lanterns hanging from the ceiling.

I bought a personalized hanger off of Etsy with my new last name and our wedding date twisted onto it with wire.

Our tables were overlaid with a champagne tablecloth and chocolate brown burlap runners.

  • Guilty! We included our furbabies in our engagement photos and made one wear a sign saying "Our humans are getting married!" for the STDs.

We also made a Thank You sign.

I don't have a good photo of it, but I had a bride hanger made in purple for me as well as put the bridesmaids names on thier dress hangers.
    image
  • Luckily for me I did not discover Pinterest until AFTER my wedding was over with.  If I had discovered it before I would have been an even more crazy crafty DIY bitch then I already was.

  • Our cake was originally found by us in a picture our photographer took at a wedding at our venue a few years ago. I showed it to then FI and he really liked it vs other ones we were looking at. I made some modifications to it when we sent in our order. Later I found it on pintrest. Oh well. It was delicious and no one I know IRL has ever done it.

The photo is a pretty popular thing lately I think but I loved the idea of having something to later display in our home.

I also made little envelopes with tissues in them for the ceremony. I didn't find it on pintrest but my boss gave me one from her daughter's wedding and said she got the idea from there. Our moms loved them! I don't have a picture on my phone though.

  • I did the DIY photobooth. I spent a lot of time on it, but I don't think it was used too much. Though my younger cousins had a ball playing with the props, so it helped achieve its purpose---to help all the guests have fun as nobidy was going to be bored at my wedding!
  • @LaPeanut1018 - I think your decor was beautiful and I will admit to liking lace and burlap together (if done well) especially in the banister garland you had going on.

  • In all fairness, there are some legitimately gorgeous things on Pinterest that haven't been completely overdone yet. In that sense, it's no different getting inspiration there versus a bridal magazine.

Yup.  And things were overdone way before pinterest or even the internet became popular.  So to blame Pinterest is just silly.  Trends happen, whether they are good or bad or just down right ugly.

This is so true. Some of my inspiration came from Pinterest, but I also pulled a lot from Southern Living Weddings and the main Southern Living magazine. That magazine helped pull me away from doing a fall wedding into more of a "lots of texture, soft neutral colors with Southern elements" wedding.

@Maggie0829 Thanks! I'm probably being obnoxious, I just get tired of the burlap/lace hate sometimes and I just want to show that it can be done well. I feel so lucky we had the florist we did because she took all my vague ideas and pulled them together into something really beautiful.

  • Is this a Pinterest thing? It might be a Pinterest thing.

  • We had a cookie bar with a sign that said "All you need is love...and a few cookies". No shame here.

I think the burlap and lace hate comes from the fact that it is now seen as "overdone."  The same with mason jars.

  • Guys I love this thread.

    That is all.
