Re: Worst Baby Names

  • You want to talk about made up first names? How about made up last names?

    Oh, yes.

When my stepmother's kids were born, she didn't like her own last name and she didn't want them to have a connection with their father, so she made up a last name. Bronwyn. It may have been the last name of her Second Life character, or she may have straight up imagined it, I can't remember. But either way, their last name is connected to literally no other person they are related to.

Also she calls my stepsister by her middle name. I don't know why. Her first name doesn't have anything wrong with it, though when I look at her I think the middle name suits her better.

My own name, Rachel, was incredibly popular the year I was born. Until college, I had zero classes where I was the only one with that name. My mom recalls choosing my name thinking it was pretty unique, and then three other women in her maternity room named their babies the exact same thing. Because I associated it with people my own age, I had a hard time imagining myself as an adult with the name because as a kid I didn't know any adult Rachels. So I thought I would change my name when I got older because "it's a kid's name."

WEIRD!! I've heard of reverting back to a grandmother's maiden name or something but never just plucking a name out of thin air!

  • Bronwyn is the name of a waitress at DH's country club.  She is from South Africa.  Apparently it's a Welsh name.  I love the name because of her.  She is such a nice, pretty person with an amazing accent.  It's crazy how knowing a person with a certain name can either make you love it or hate it.

  • My dad's family is from a very tiny town in Louisiana. The last time we were visiting they were having judge(I think, definitely something political) elections and one of the candidate's name was LaLa. I was informed it is a family name.
One of the courts I work in has a Judge Dumm.

I do not understand this reference. Who is or was Bruce Wayne?

    Batman

Oh, I once saw a kind of dark Michael Keaton movie Batman. Never remembered the name. THANKS

Wouldn't it be easier just to google it? I am really not trying to be snarky but by the time you wait for the answer you could've found it in .0047 seconds or whatever the time it is to do the google search.

Not on this mobile. I hope answering did not extremely inconvenience the person who answered.
I simply wonder why you wasted your time responding instead of scrolling on by. Why do you care if I get the answer from another poster instead of Google?

I got "Kateland" on my cup last time I went to Starbucks. Apparently I'm an amusement park now. Names are not that hard.

Right? It totally sounds like an amusement park. When someone wrote that on my cup back when FIL's mistress was calling me Kaitland intentionally, I had to not look at it. It made me mad that someone else would (unintentionally) address me as a damn amusement park.

  • My parents were thinking of naming me Susan. I don't mind it, but definitely doesn't fit me.  My name is not very common, though not unusual enough to make people think.  If I hear it, I turn cos generally I'm the only one of me there.  It's confusing when you're not used to it.

DH was named after his Dad.  His parents called him by a Spanish nickname, and still do to differentiate between them both.  It's an actual nickname, not a different name (kinda like how the French call kids petit chou/little cabbage).  He swears he'd never name a kid his name cos it's Spanish and not common out here.  He was always a bit embarrassed of it growing up once he left Chile.

My cousin is named after his Dad, but is called by him middle name to tell them apart.  He's only even been know to everyone as his middle name.
My grandpa/uncle did that. I was probably in my late teens before I found out that my Uncle Steve's real name wasn't Steve! He goes by firstinitial Steven lastname in his law practice. But I don't know anyone who calls him realfirstname. It's kind of weird.

The first Batman comic came out in 1939.

There were few other movies prior to Michel Keaton. And a handful since.

I guess this is not something you and your brother compared notes on.
Don't forget the campy TV show with Adam West!

  • I'm soooo late to this thread.

I work at a University office I once saw the spelling Kryst'L for Crystal.

I also have cousins who have named thier kids. Jaxyn, Camryn, Dexton, Dylan, Kinslee, and Khloe (This one may be right) ?

My name is Caitlin.  I consistently have to spell it for people.  And the nurses at the hospital where I as born tried to tell me mom that she spelled it wrong.

We haven't talked much about about baby names, just because that a good 7-10 years from now.  We do know that if we have a boy,  his middle name will either Roy, or Glen, depending on his first name.  These are the first and middle name of FI's late father.

I want names that are classic but not super popular, just because I don't want to have to put a child through that.

I like Charles, Phillip (Not going by Phil), Wesley and other kinds of classic names for boys.

For girls I like, Julia, Cara, and a few other classic but not super popular names.

H once suggested we name a son Logan Xavier, as in two characters from The X-men.  Since they both seemed like perfectly fine names to me, I made the mistake of saying, "Okay. You get to name one of our children and you can name him after comic book characters if you really want."  He now goes around telling people that when we have kids, one of them will be named Deadpool Doctor Octopus Lastname.

that is the correct spelling of Dylan. Dillon is the spelling for a last name but some people use it as a first name spelling too.

I really like the name Dylan. And now I like Kyle after seeing it mentioned earlier (not KYLER, just Kyle!)

  • @falsara another Caitlin! And spelled just like mine!

There's a danger in doing this. My name is Elizabeth. And my mom hates that people call me by a nickname but I don't go by Elizabeth expect with my family. So just because you say,  not going by X nickname doesn't mean it will happen. IMO, if you really hate a nickname, don't name your kid a name where it's a possibility.

  • @lolo883 To be fair if I heard your name, my first instinct would probably be Laurie.

^^ agree with the above. My mom HATE the name Katie. People would try to call me Katie (or Catie since I'm a C) and she'd quickly correct them. This rubbed off on me and I spent YEARS correcting people. It got tiresome and I finally resigned to being okay with being called Cait. People always want to shorten other people's names, which I do not understand at all. If I introduce myself to you as Caitlin, please don't ask me if I go by Catie, or just assume that I like it and start nicknaming me. I would've introduced myself that way if I did.

My teacher friend told me about a girl she had whose name was La-a.  When she read (Lah-a) the girl snapped back "It's (La-dash-a)".  So there's that.

Boxesssssss Oh I totally know the danger with that, people want to shorten my name, and it's not even that long. I think though that if the kid want to make the decision to go by a nickname later in life that's their choice, but I will be using all the syllables. Like a lot of ladies have said, if you want your kid to go by a nickname, then just give them that name.

I'm Laura. The number of times that people have said, "Laurie?" or written that down when I tell them is absurd. I have never met or heard of anyone, of any generation, actually named "Laurie" so I don't know why it happens. Laura seems much more common to me. If people say, "Lauren," that I can understand. "Lori" I know, at least.

Yeah if I get Laurie, Laura or Lauren I understand... because at least those are all common spellings. Bur Lauri, Lorri, Lorie, Lorrie, WTF?

My SIL is an Elizabeth and her whole life she went by Beth. But when she met my brother she introduced herself as Elizabeth and that's how we know her. Her dad called the house one time for "Beth" and I was like, "Sorry, there isn't a Beth here" and hung up the phone.

Yea, that name is an urban legend. Someone here was saying that there's actually no one registered with the SSA under that name. It's always some second hand account - someone knows someone.... ehhh no they don't.

    Naming trends I hate:

"Cutesy" or "creative" spellings of regular names. I don't even like certain fairly common alternative spellings, like "Allyson" for "Allison." I especially hate it when the letters k or y are used where they wouldn't be.

Names from Game of Thrones or other sci-fi or fantasy series. Sometimes I like reading or watching them, but when I meet a living human with one of those names, I think their parents are having trouble determining whether or not they are living in reality or the books or shows.

The "aiden" trend. I have a nephew named Zaiden. Blech.

Last names used as first names: Travis, Hunter, Tanner, Taylor, etc.

Names of places or things used as given names that aren't usually used as names.
