  • Well I am relaxin for 30 more mins then I have to go to a quick meeting then lots and lots of studying

Most of the wedding planning is done, except for the photog fiasco which we are dealing with.

FI and I are starting to think about where I would want to apply for residency so we can start researching about cost of living, land costs, etc. Also lots of financial planning on our part.

I'm going to see my BFF's foster kittens tonight. Their eyes just opened and they're wobbling around drunkenly on their little legs and they are SO TEENY. I'm way too excited. She's a foster for a local cat rescue and has six of them and their mom living in her home gym (because they're too young to be vaccinated, they have to be quarantined from her own cat) until they're old enough to be adopted.

Will you post pics of these little guys later, maybe??

  • It was too foggy for school today! I'm enjoying a day full making plans for my classroom next year and my massive lab trying to convince he is still small enough to be a lapdog!

I'm honestly surprised you didn't make a NWR post to ask for the best way to get her out from under the bed! We could've provided you with so much insight!

I need to know the best way to keep her from getting under the bed again. I should make a NWR posted...

I was just in the living room and all of a sudden I hear "Fi? Uh...I need you to come in here...now! FIONA!" and so I stop doing my super important screwing around on the internet stuff and go see what she's doing and girlfriend has herself stuck under the bed!

Like, her top half and some of her booty and she can't wiggle back out! She was trying to reach something and decided it was best to just try to get under the bed.
  • So today has offiicially been my worst day of the week so far. I mean, considering, it's not that bad but I'm still ready to go home. It started when I had to give a survey in a class and the teacher and I got conflicted information about whether or not underage students could take the survey. My info said no, but they have to stay in the classroom, and hers said they could take it. So we went with my info but I guess one of her students was, in her words, "very upset" that she had to not take the survey and couldn't leave, and the teacher was just super stressed about it to a point where I started to wonder, does she have a panic attack whenever one of her students is upset about anything? Eventually, the student basically stormed out, which I could basically give fuck all about, but the teacher was still upset about it. I find it really hard to believe the student had literally nothing to work on quietly for 25 minutes. If it were my student, I'd tell her, "You might be under 18 but you're still in college so you need to act like an adult and not throw a tantrum over something so small if you want to be taken seriously." I let slip to the teacher that I thought the student was overreacting, and she was clearly not pleased with my observation. It's like, lady, chill out.

Then one of my tutors quit. I have had like five tutors quit this semester, and every time it happens, I see it coming. It's always a student who's overtaxed themselves, keeps having to miss work, but insists they can still do it, then at the last minute they're like, "Yeah, I can't. Bye." I don't expect them to be able to juggle a million things and I completely understand their situation, but they hardly ever bother to come to me beforehand. Instead of coming to me and giving me the opportunity to help them work through problems, they basically lie to me, tell me they can do it, and then panic and quit when they realize they can't, leaving me with a gap-filled schedule.

To any college students reading this: If you have a job, and you need to quit it, GIVE NOTICE. If you don't give notice, it will severely impact whether you'll be able to get a reference. Not a good plan.

Damn. I can't believe a college student stormed out of a classroom. Well, I kind of can. People of any age can be immature, dramatic assholes. But come on.

As for your tutors quitting, that sucks. I'm sorry. Could you maybe give them that talk before you hire them? Like "Now, a lot of the time this gets to be too much to juggle, and if that happens please come talk to me before you up and quit. It's ok if it's too much to juggle, but if you quit with no notice, it screws everyone else, yada yada." ?

I actually do that. During their orientation, I make a point to say, "You're students first, so if you have to quit to maintain your grades, okay. But I'm here to help you, so please don't wait until it becomes too much. Let me try to help you rework your schedule." Some of them do, and we either can work it out or we can't, but at least we tried and I was prepared. But a lot of them are just stubborn and think they can do it all. This particular tutor is taking classes, is in the honor's society, and also has some family obligations in addition to working for me. He's old enough to know that just walking out of a job is a bad idea, but I guess he really thought he could do it all.

But this incident has really made me think I need to warn them before I even hire them, like in the interview process. Some students handle it just fine, but I think I'm going to add an interview question along the lines of, "While most students have no trouble juggling this job among their other obligations, some have found it more overwhelming than they expected." And then a follow up question about how they deal with stress or something. I'll have to give it some more thought.

But it's all good. I'm being proactive and starting the recruiting process early, which makes me feel a lot better. We might not be able to fill the schedule, but at least I know I'm doing what I can to solve the problem.

  • I accepted the job!

And it looks like the house sellers accepted our offer! We just need to get a new approval letter that isn't conditional upon the sale of our current house, which shouldn't be a problem.

  • Yay jobs and babies! And omg, I can leave the house without snowpants! I packed up my snowpants and coat and wool socks yesterday and it was the best feeling.  That's my favorite.

Took my pup to herding and there's lots of baby lambs. Lambs are the cutest. Spring is awesome. The adults aren't used to the warmer weather though and we had to switch groups out a lot because the poor girls would start panting after a short time.

  • I'm super excited because I get to move from teaching third grade to first next year!!! I'll miss my buds I teach with but we'll still be in the same building. Now I get to read and share all of my favorite books. Mo Willems will be all over my room. Also, I get to say good bye to so much standardized testing! Wooohooo!! I'm going to go back to Teachers Pay Teachers now to look at the fun stuff I get to do next year.

Storming out was stupid, but if she's in college, why couldn't she leave? You can't force people to stay in your classroom.

Why type of survey was it.
It was for some research institute. I honestly have no idea why the students were supposed to stay if they aren't taking it. It doesn't seem to serve a purpose and you're right, we can't force them. The most that could happen is they get in trouble with their teacher, like in my classes I take off points if they decide to just up and leave. But I'm just the lowly survey administrator, so I can't do anything about it, which is why I really don't care if they decide to leave. What am I supposed to do, hold them down?

All classes also have to give the college's internal research survey at the end of the semester, and students are free to leave if they aren't participating or whenever they finish, so I really don't see why for this other survey they're supposed to stay. But again, I don't think the freakout over it was warranted, but maybe there's factors I don't know about.

But that's all done now, and thanks everyone for letting me rant. It helped a lot.

Today I'm focused on two awesome things. First, FI and I decided to do an impromptu weekend in Tampa to see Jemaine Clement's new movie and have fun hotel time. We used Hotwire's mystery deal thing and got a pretty cheap room at a super cool looking vintage hotel. Then we had to ask around to see if anyone was willing to either watch our dog or come over a couple times to walk him. Most people said they couldn't, and I started to get super annoyed because he's such a chill dog and he'd only need to be walked twice. Then I pretty quickly realized I had no right to be annoyed since we'd made these plans before making sure we had someone to take care of him. "Your poor planning does not constitute etc, etc." But this morning FI's sister, who'd initially turned us down, said she could do it after all, so yay!

And also a friend I used to be super close with but haven't seen at all or talked too much in several years messaged me last night to ask if she could come visit some weekend. I'm so excited! Hopefully we'll hammer out the details this week.
