We cut 35 people from the guest list so we could afford to host better (also because of the venue we wanted). We may have to cut more, which upsets me, but we wouldn't dream of cutting SOs only for any reason.
My vision: As long as it doesn't break the bank and everyone is happy, we're happy.
Perhaps "serious relationship" was not the right phrase. The point being, we are not inviting SO's of under a year, or that we've never met. Though in this case, it's not actually an issue.

I married Mr.Wench one year to the day after we began dating. A few weeks into our relationship his SIL's brother got married. I attended the wedding with him, and the RD was the first time I met not only the couple, but several other members of my now extended family.
