melly- haha Hey we all have our military wines. We're been really struggling late with some military crap, but that's just the way it goes.. Keep us updated! I know that in some ways it's out of your control... :/ That's the frustrating part. Air National Guard would be cool if he ends up that's the only way to go. My dentist is an old AF guard pilot and LOVED it. :P
aww crown that sucks :( I'm with ya only a day behind. Dentist on Thursday :( What are you going in for? blah.  Stupid hospitals... Don't let it bring your whole day down <3 <3  mellybelly- Sorry about the PITA military stuff... So typical... They harass you when you don't want them to, and they are nonexistent when you need them -_- but yay for adorable kiddos!!!!  Everyone talking weather- holy crap -27 sounds awful! O.o So far so good on our weather front.. I mean.. it's grey skies... but no rain, and in the low 40s so I'll take it. Seattle is known for people getting SAD, which is why soooo many people tan and are  hyped up on coffee every day here. lol. I'<strong>m surprised that OK is getting so bad? I didn't realize that it could be that way down there!
    </strong>Posted by firsttimersluck
It isn't normally that bad. Normally by the time I get to work the sun is at least rising and it is normally setting as I walk out the door. But his morning it is cloudy and idark when I walked into work. =(   I'm sure SAD does not affect as many people in OK as it does in WA, but a few semesters ago for my health/disease class, I did a research paper over SAD rates in OK and it is surprising how many cases their are in OK..

Melly - My FBIL is in the Air National Gaurd and works in KY and he seems to really really like it. He's made promotions pretty regularly and it seems like there is a lot of oppertunity all over the place with it.

On the sunshine note, I must say I feel a lot happier in FL. I love sunshine, just going outside for 5 minutes and feeling the sunnyness makes me happy.

Thats too funny. FI grew up about 30 minutes from Louisville, KY.
I don't know why people are so sad! I love the weather here, maybe its the economy? I know it took a really bad hit here a while ago.

It implies that it's more the PEOPLE, and less about the weather. Of course the people must be unpleasant for a reason... economy, less personal space, too long of working hours, etc maybe? Not sure.. I just found it interesting that Seattle isn't on the list.. but that's because we're in crappy weather together so overall it's a pretty friendly place. :P hah

That is interesting, there are a lot of Florida towns on that top 10 list.

I wonder if anyone has ever done a study to see if the lack of real seasonal changes affects people? I don't know about anyone else, but I enjoy when the seasons change.. I love summer time, but I also love crisp fall morning  and the first cold winter snow storm.

Amanda, I think having seasons makes people feel more alive.  Or at least that's my personal feeling.  I lose such track of time being down here, no perspective on when seasons are coming or going, I feel like Christmas just happened or forget that Halloween is behind us.  It's like being in the Twilight Zone, where there's no sense of up or down.  At least when I have seasons, I look forward to something different every 4 months.  On the plus side, it's like everything just blends together and time seems to pass a lot quicker down here because every day is just like the last.

As far as green tea goes, I used to hate it and think it tasted like dirt.  And then I lived in China and realized that we all make it wrong - we use boiling water like for black tea, but that's wrong.  It burns the leaves and gives a bitter taste.  You use hot, but not boiling, water.  Now I LOOOOOOOOVE green tea and don't add anything to it - not even a bit of sugar!  I can drink it all day, especially jasmine green tea.  Yum!

That is what I am thinking. I'm going to look it up on the University's research library when I get home to see if there are any offical studies out there about it. I'd just be interested to see.

C- I live farther north than you, but the lack of seasons here has made me crazy. We have a tree up, but it still feels like September. I feel like we just moved in a few weeks ago even though it's been almost 5 months. The only thing that keeps me thinking it might be winter is that it gets dark earlier. I'm seriously losing my mind about it and really hope that I get to live somewhere with seasons. Even in MS I'd probably get to wear a sweater, but it's so hot and humid here that I have had about 5 total days of "fall clothes" weather. As a larger girl, I really like being able to cover up a bit (not saying all ps girls do or thinner girls don't) and a large portion of my wardrobe is unwearable here.

Dani, to be fair, they judged unhappiness by suicide rates and unemployment.  The south was definitely hit harder with unemployment, and I am not sure about the suicide rates but perhaps people feel more isolated in less populated areas, and the south tends to be mostly suburban/rural?  There's more resources in bigger cities?  I dunno, just speculating.

haha firemed! I know, right?! I had Five Guys for the first time this year... It's pretty amazing... not gonna lie... >_< But I'm not a big fast food person (I kinda count it... I know it's kinda that weird inbetween of being and not being) but man that's good stuff. And they just HAD to put one in my small town.. with that really cool LED soda machine that you press "coke" and 7 different TYPES of coke pop up... you click Hi-C and 6 different kinds pop up.. The thing is amazing. :P

BAHAHAHAAH OMG AMANDA!! Seriously, amazing. and So so true.. Although not completely true about fall.. We have "Indian" summers which means it's nice through September and most of October... but man... 40s and gloomy is pretty accurate. I hate spring here. It's just awful awful rain. H was so confused and upset when he found out that backpacking season starts late July here, since he's uesd to the smokeys and you would DARE go backpack there in late July with that heat.. haha. .. We backpacked in July here and had to ice-pick over snow >_<

</div><div>Now, my sister lives in St. Pete, and absolutely loves it. Somebody posted it on her facebook wall, and she speculated (joking really) that people move down to Florida expecting paradise, and do not get that at all, and perhaps become more depressed. Now, she was clearly joking, but it does make you wonder. Florida is made up of A LOT of transplants from what I have seen, and it does make you wonder if they expected the grass to be greener, and it never was. I think there can be a lot of reasons over all though.

Florida also has an extraordinarily large elderly population, and the elderly do have a fairly high suicide rate.

It's not exactly a fair and balanced statistical evaluation of "saddest cities".

Buffalo has a ton of colleges, but so many grads move out of state because of lack of jobs.  A lot might come back once they are established, and maybe able to get a job, but a lot move as well. Buffalo has GORGEOUS architecture, and great food. And the people are usually pretty awesome too. But it does get depressing. <div>
</div><div>I did a quick google search, and it appears Buffalo is 3rd place behind Seattle with cloudiest days. So you get the idea. I loved my family/friends/food/and atmosphere there. But winter would get depressing and would lastfor a while. My parents had the heat on in June this past summer. This year isn't too bad so far, but last year was just bitter cold and snowy, every day. I had a broken elbow that I got in December. Do you know how hard it is to shovel with one hand???? I just kept repeating to myself, this is my last winter. </div>

It's dark now at 430 and doesn't get light until 9ish. H HATES that about here, but I think he's going to miss this place in a year when we move. I don't usually have issues with the weather depression thing, but I definitely gain the tummy pudge! haha I'm fighting it this year :] Screw you holiday cookies!!

For the past 3 years before I moved, I worked at a job, that 3 days out of the week I worked 12 hour shifts, and then Thursday and Friday, I got out at 2:30 and 1pm.<div>By Wednesday, I would hate life. I wouldn't even have seen gray skies. It was dark when I left for work, dark when I left work. My actual office didn't have windows, so the only time I saw the outside is when I walked up front to get a client, and usually then I was busy so not paying attention.
    </div><div>
</div><div>This job is 8:30-5. I leave at 7:30 so its usually light, and at 5 the sun is setting and when I get home at 6, it is dark. Not too bad at all. </div><div>
</div><div>If I could have screwed shoveling, I would have, but there are no snow days in Buffalo for my job. I was allowed to drive even in driving bans. If I could get to work safely, I was expected to get there. I called in twice due to snow. The first time, I was about to call in (so I guess I didn't call in) when the clinics were closed. The last time, was last year about this time, I got 3 feet of snow over night. My car was snowed in, in my garage. There was no way I was shoveling my entire drive way by myself to make it work, not to mention, none of the streets were plowed haha. </div>

ugh.. awful. It's definitely a hard thing to try to work around. The cold and dark days make it sooo hard to go to the gym. I just want to curl up on the couch with tea... Which I'm doing now (but don't worry, I hit the gym already ;) ) Sounds like you guys actually have darker days over there.. blah. So I take it you enjoy just visiting now? :]
How do you like SC in comparison? (besides the better, light days)

I won't visit in winter. I don't want to risk having my flight canceled due to weather and taking MORE time off of work than I planned. My next visit will probably be in summer, and then I have to go November next year because I'm in a wedding.

I really really love SC actually. I like the climate thus far, my job is ok. I would like one closer to home instead of driving a hour each day. H and I both like the area, and can see settling around this area, whether it be Beaufort, Hilton Head, or even go to Savannah (which is technically Georgia, but not far from here). I like being close to beaches (such a beach girl).
