[QUOTE]In Response to Re: New at this : Wha?!  Why?  I'd have a serious talking to with that professor. Actually, this very issue had me getting a D in my 6th grade English class.  I kept flunking our papers because she took off five points for every time I used the Oxford Comma.  Well, and I also got in trouble because that teacher wanted us to ONLY read 60 pages per week of the book she assigned, so we could predict what would happen in future chapters, and I read ahead.  I'd usually finish the book in a week. So I got a D. Stupid teacher.

AP style is for newsroom. I guess the theory is less printing/characters if that makes sense. It's stupid I even have to take this class because I'm an advertising major and it's all journalism stuff

</div><div>Ahh and that's the beauty of college. As an education major, one of my required classes was a physical geography class, to learn about rocks, and such. Seems like I should know some things for science right? Except the professors way to teach? Show slide shows of all the places he visited and talk about them. Except, it was always just pictures of rocks, nothing else. This class was 3 hours. I hated life during that time.

Wow that sucks. This class is 2 hours 10 minutes Tuesday, Thursday. We turned in our last big paper last week, got them back today, and she said no final. So we watched a movie for the whole class period. I fell asleep haha

The ladies here have really great advice. I think we were just all so surprised at that question because no job will pay for someone's wedding. I hope you stick around because you'll learn a lot from these ladies. I know I have.

My college is really dumb. I have to take a music theory class for my account major... How does that even make sense?

I had to take 122 hours to graduate. 40 of those hours had to be general ed requirements (1/3) in Social Science, Science, Communication, and Humanities.  I have taken classes in Health and Disease, Native American Music, Geology, Creative Therapy, Sociology, World Music, Human Geography, and Ballroom Dance to name just a few.  I am getting a Bachelors of Science with a dual major in MIS and Accounting. Native American music is NEVER going to help me in my field.

The point of college isn't to learn exactly what you are going to be doing in your field (unless you are going to a vo-tech), half the stuff I learned in my classes my Supervisor has told me is completely wrong. College is about learning to learn. It is teaching you to think on your feet and use analytical reasoning to approach a problem. It is also about being a well-rounded individual. Additionally, I am also fairly certain having that many gen eds has to do with accreditation too.

I agree Amanda. College isn't just to learn what you are going for. It's also to help you because knowledgable in different things- to become a well rounded person.

Haha. I totally get that but it makes sense to have one class is a core area like science or history or government.

To be honest, I don't think any of us were trying to be mean, just funny and sort of sarcastic.  I personally am sorry if it hurt your feelings, it wasn't my intention.  We just all thought it was a bit of a silly question if the military would pay for your wedding, which I'm sure you'll understand if you stop to think about it - what other job would pay for a wedding?  We also all know each other, so we tend to joke around a bit.  If you stick around, I'm sure you'll see that, and in the process learn a LOT more about the military, and the Marines specifically.  My FI is a Marine, as I know a few others are engaged/married to Marines.  I've learned basically everythign I know about the military and the lifestyle to expect from these wonderful ladies.

OP- ditto everything C said.  Nothing was said to hurt your feelings or make fun of you.  I am sorry that it came across that way.

Zim, I know what you mean.  I work with college students and hear them complain about the "core" requirements.  Since the US (college) education system is built on liberal arts which is developed to create a "well rounded" person upon finishing a degree program.  It is also to create critical thinking skills.  (Look at me sounding all "College Admin" HAA).

Haha yeah my credits are all weird lol. I had some trouble with my 4 year plan. My program is in the college of liberal arts and sciences then the journalism school is within that. So I have to have a certain number in my journalism school, in LAS but outside of my journalism school, certain number of non-LAS, etc
