[QUOTE]Side question - what do you ladies think of telling people the name before the baby is born? Jemmini's post made me think of this - I'm going to tell people we haven't decided on a name even when we have. I don't want anyone's opinions on my baby's name. Once the kid is born and named, no one would be tactless enough to say they don't like the name, but you wouldn't believe the things people will say before. My friend made the mistake of telling her friends what she wanted to name her baby - one friend went on and on to tell her how horrible the name was, how the kid would never find a job (the name was Jordan, btw... her *ridiculously racist* argument was because of Michael Jordan, everyone would assume the kid was black... yeah, I know, TERRIBLE). Meanwhile, another friend went and named her baby boy Jordan 2 months before my friend had her baby, so she felt the name had been "stolen." So yeah, until the kid is breathing on his/her own, I'm not telling anyone the name.

I had a friend who wouldn't tell me their baby's name for this exact reason. They named her Ella, which I love, but I guess he didn't want to take any chances. Personally, I'll tell people because generally speaking I don't give a fvuck what people think. *makes sweetest face possible*

This is exactly why I want to give my kids Vietnamese middle names. There's probably a pretty good chance they won't know how to speak it or understand it at all, so at the very least, I want them to have a little bit of my culture in them. I mean, even my brother, born from two immigrants, can't speak it (although he's gotten better now that he started working for the Garden Grove PD, haha). I can, but since I moved away, it's gotten so bad.

There's a tradition in my family to name the first son Robert. So that's settled. lol

FSIL just named her son Owen Robert. I LOVE it. They were 2 of our top picks. Love the name Owen...love my new nephew too! <3 But she knows that we are probably going to use Robert if we have a son. Probably Robert Joseph, after my grandfather. I also like William. For girls we've talked about Madison Elizabeth, Kennedy, and using our mother's names somehow (Linda and Heather).

Its the strangest thing trying to balance every culture. American, Vietnamese and Danish. FI already has four names in his name. FOUR names on his passport. Yeesh. Our poor kids... But I totally agree, that at least their middle name should be Vietnamese. I can speak but being away from my family I've gotten worse. My older sister and brother who live near my parents speak fine and tease me about my poor pronunciation. I might give my kids my parents first names as their middle. My parents gave me and my two siblings similar middle names. For instance

Annete Van Anh (older sister)
Linda Van An (ME)
Allen Hoang An (Younger brother)

On another note if your brother works for the Garden Grove PD, I've probably come across him when I or my friends get pulled over on our motorcycles

How do you guys feel about 'popular' names? My friend is due next month and she doesn't have a name picked out yet, because her favorite boys name that she's loved for years is now all of a sudden one of the most popular boys names.

I don't blame her...I don't like overly popular names either and I'd probably change it too. She's been looking for anything below the top 50 for names. (her name was the most popular girls name for most of the '80's and she hated it, so I definitely understand her not wanting to do that to her son).

I don't like the idea of popular names... but at the same time if I still loved the name I don't think I'd scrap it just because it's really popular for now. Those things change.

I think girls care a lot more about this stuff than boys do. If anything, having too unusual of a name as a boy is a bigger deal. I knew 5 Andrews in the same fraternity in college, and it didn't bother any of them a bit. However, people wondered how my best friend Katie and I could handle living together when we both had similar names (didn't bother me, but still).

I wouldn't worry so much about giving unique names as much as ones that fit. I don't want it to sound too trendy 20 years down the line, and I don't want teachers to wonder whether it's a girl or a boy when they are calling attendance. Those are bigger concerns for me.

That's cute what your parents did. My name "matches" my mom's, so if I have a girl, it has to be a name that starts with a 'T'. Her's is Thuong, and mine is Thu. Our first names both start with 'J' too, but I couldn't find a J name I liked for my kid, so I think that'll end with me. My brother's is Nguyen (original, huh?), so I think if I have a boy, his middle name will be Nguyen too, after my brother even though it's SOOO overdone.

And if it was a Viet guy pulling you over, it was most likely my bro. I think he said there's only like 2 dudes on the force that are Viet, which is weird for the area lol.

This is the only thing in this post I can relate to. I'm a big family name person. All my brothers and sisters have family names, including me. I would really like to use Atkinson. I think it could possibly work as a girl's name, but it will be weird and different for sure. Maybe as a middle name?

For a girl: Elizabeth Michelle. Elizabeth is my gramma's name (and my middle name) and Michelle is in honor of my mom's best friend.

For a boy: I have no clue. I like the names Michael and William, but I'm not set on any names other than the one above.

For a girl Lillian (nicknamed Lily/Lillie).
My aunt who passed was Lillie Marie (which she hated btw and went by Marie) but I wanted to incorporate her name somehow and then BF fell in LOVE with it and refuses to budge. So I'm thinking Lillian Ava...maybe?! We don't have a specific middle name picked out yet. We've also thought about a few russian middle names since BF is Russian. Lillian Karina?! I don't know...we have years to figure this out anyway!

For a boy possibly Dominic? We haven't really found a good boy name we like yet. Plus BF really wants a girl first so she can be 'daddy's little girl.'

Yea he couldn't exactly hide the reason for this name. I told him it is open for discussion. I think it would be a pretty unique name. I like unique name.

[QUOTE]I don't know...we have years to figure this out anyway! For a boy possibly Dominic? We haven't really found a good boy name we like yet. Plus BF really wants a girl first so she can be 'daddy's little girl.'

FI doesn't want the 1st name to be Luke for that reason - he doesn't want people saying the whole "Luke I am your father" thing. Therefore, we like Matthew Luke (I'm good in whichever order it is) or Kyle Martin for boys. I also have a family name that I've wanted for a long time - my great-grandfather and another great-great (4 or 5 greats, I think) middle name was Hampton. I like the name Randall Hampton (call him Randy).

For a girl, FI really likes the name Faith, but I just don't like it as a 1st name - I've told him we can use it for a middle name, though. I had really wanted to name a girl Emily for years, but it's just gotten so popular and one of my best friends just named her daughter Emily, so we've thrown that name out. We've thrown a bunch of names in the mix at different times, but nothing is screaming at us yet (good thing we don't need a name yet). Morgan, Amanda and Samantha are nice names and Veronica and Camile are ones I've just added recenlty as names I like.

We're still on the fence about having a kid. I definitely do not like the idea of being pregnant and childbirth scares the crap out of me. Also, I'm not the biggest fan of children in general. But we like to pretend.

In Judaism we name in honor of a dead relative, usually the same first initial if not the name itself, i.e. I'm Belinda in honor of my mother's grandmother Bertha.

For a girl, we picked Shoshanna. Our favorite movie is "Inglourious Basterds" and the heroine's name is Shoshanna. I also love the name Sadie - it was my paternal grandfather's mother's name - but of course FI had to say that his uncle used to have a dog named Sadie, so he would never name his daughter that.

For a boy, we like Isaac or Gabriel. Isaac means "laughter". Gabriel I have loved for a very long time (and the nickname Gabe is so cute!). My mother's father's name started with an "I", so Isaac works. However, we don't have any G's =(

We keep having fights about a middle name for a boy. I want David, after my father who passed. But Steven is a family name in FI's family. It's his middle name, his father's first name and his grandfather's middle name. We are both very stubborn about a child that might not ever exist.

If we ever do spawn, I hope we have a boy. I feel like I would handle having a son better than I would a daughter. Plus the color pink makes me gag.

BF and i have talked about names before and have actually came up with a few that we agreed upon. For a girl we like the names Savannah Grace and Lyla Lee (Lee was my grandmothers middle name). For a boy we like the name Landon Michael or Kaleb. My brother and SIL just had a daughter and they were going to name her Riley Anne, but we said the full name so much that they decide to name her Rileyann Faith. Using both names as her first name and Faith as her middle name. I love the name and it fits her perfectly. I like more uncommon names for some reason. One of boy names I liked that BF didn't like were Colton Preston (Preston after my grandfather).
