I'm lucky if I remember to cut my nails.  They're like claws now.  *Note to self* cut nails when I get home.  I don't indulge in a manicure, I end up chipping the polish by the end of the day.

I get my nails done but honestly that is the last reason I do it... It wouldn't have even occured to me to think about it in that way...

I'm trying!  Doing well this week - some weeks they look like crap.  But I think that's a very reasonable pre-engagement behavior.

We're going on vacation next week, and I'm 95% sure that he won't be proposing on the trip, but it's certainly a romantic trip and at the least I want my fingers to look good holding those wine glasses in pictures.  And, you know, just in case...

I don't think that's true - it's like knowing there's a high probability of rain in the next several weeks, so you keep an umbrella in your car.  That's a more reasonable analogy.  I mean, it's a totally harmless behavior, and if you have a relative idea of when the proposal is coming then it makes sense.

I have never had my nails done - I do too much physical work to worry about them honestly. Even for my wedding I didn't have anything special done , and honestly if I had I think it would have made my hands look fake as it's just not something I have done. /shrug

Nah, it's just not me to do something like that. My nails are kept short and tidy most of the time, but sometimes my fingers are in rough shape (little cuts, etc) or my hands are dry. Oh well. As far as I'm concerned, looking after your nails (engagement pending or not) is wayy too much effort!

I don't wear make up or get my nails did or even wear pretty clothes 9 days out of 10.  If the bf proposes, I think he's going to just get me looking normal ;)  That's okay with me.  I'm kinda a tomboy though.  Or like, just don't like dressing up/getting my nails done, etc.
I guess, to tell you the truth, I've never had much of a desire to grow facial hair. I think I've managed to play quarterback just fine without a mustache. - Peyton

I am not a vessal of patience, I applaud you.  This has nothing to do with engagement, and everything to do with I am generally impatient especially when I know what I want.

I have never considered doing this ritual, however I usually keep my Talons and Claws in a prim and proper state.

I was 98% positive when the proposal was going to be happening. I did not do anything to prepare my nails. I keep them short and that is all the more I do. I hated having to get my nails done for the wedding. It turned out to be good that I did because there were far more pictures of my hands than I ever imagined.

i used to get my nails done all the time... however, it kind of gets expensive.  i get them done (not fake nails, just an american style mani and pedi) for special events and just keep them neat/trim/clear polish the rest of the time.

For me, I'd like to have nice nails all the time.  I've bitten my nails since I was a toddler, so it's just extra motivation to keep them up.  I always feel so ashamed when I go to one of our events for work and my nails are all bitten down and the skin around them is red and raw from being bitten.

It's like girls who exercise before some big event (prom, vacation, wedding) so they can look their best - exercise is never a bad thing, so any reason to motivate yourself to do it is great.  If you don't want to and have fun at that big event anyway, then cool.  But for me, if thinking of potentially having a ring at some point motivates me to keep from biting my nails, then awesome.

Haha... I thought of that as I said it, too!  But I really don't think so - my great-grandma's ring is still where I left it, so he hasn't had the stone reset in a new setting.  So unless he's proposing without a ring, then it's not happening yet.

    But, ya know, I wouldn't be disappointed if it did! <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif" border="0" alt="Laughing" title="Laughing" />

I'm getting my nails in shape at the moment as well. We're going away for a romantic weekend in a few weeks, and I have some strong suspicions that I may return with something sparkly on my finger ;)

But like Calindi mentioned, it's always a good thing to want to keep your nails looking pretty, especially if you're a chronic nailbiter/nailpicker like I am.

Ok ladies, I struggle horribly with biting my nails and picking. My nails never look pretty and I want them too! Soo... ladies please share your secrets to pretty nails with me! I desperately need it! I love getting my nails done, but I can't always afford it. So, any suggestions on how to keep them pretty??

Honestly, the only thing that works for me is a manicure at least every 1-2 weeks!  If they look nice, I won't bite them.  Do you have any friends who are good at doing their own nails?  In college, one of my good friends would do my nails for me in exchange for a homemade meal - an easy trade, since I always cooked!

I like the rubber band idea... I'll have to try it.

I'll hit up my friends and see if anyone can do it... thats a really good idea!

    Thanks ladies!

I'm trying to quit biting my nails, but that's more for the sake of it. Not because of an impending engagement. I think I'd probably spring for a manicure after being engaged to (and before AW pictures ahaha) but I don't know if I could predict when exactly.

What's a good way to quit biting nails? I'm so sick of being grossed out by mine.

EDIT: I just saw the past few posts aha. I did have a kind of "nail polish" that tasted really bad and used to use that. But i really hated it.

    StarGazingHiker,
I keep a container of Burt's Bees Cuticle Cream on my desk at work, and slather it all over my cuticles once or twice a day. They also sell cuticle oils, and I like using nail strengthening polishes. Personally I've found the NailTec ones to be most effective, but they're a little pricey at $10 a pop.

StarGazingHiker I bought this nail cuticle pen at Target that's made by elf (eyeslipsface) its only a dollar and I keep it in my purse. Whenever I'm bored I just take it out and go over my cuticles with it. I've also found that using hand cream often can soften raw or dry cuticles. Plus while handcream smells great it often doesn't taste so good so it may discourage you from biting!

I bite/pick my nails and so does FI...I go through spells where my nails will grow out slightly but it only lasts a couple weeks - guess you can't teach an old dog new tricksWink.  I know it takes a lot of motivation to create a new habit and I guess I'm just not that motivated (if FI quits, maybe I'd think about it - but I don't see that one happening any time soon).

All the bitter/nasty tasting stuff does no good for me.  I sucked my thumb till I was about 4 years old - that's when the dentist told my parents it was time to force me to stop to not cause more damage.  My parents tried everything - hot sauce, bitter, you name it, I would just lick it off and ask for more. The only thing that worked was telling my thumb was going to turn green and fall off if I didn't stop...so, one day at nap time, my mom put a tiny drop of green food coloring on my thumb then made a big deal out of it when I woke up - never consciously sucked my thumb again.  Too bad I already know that trick or I could try it for biting my nails.

I usually keep my nails long and well manicured. Not for the ring (though that's a bonus :P), but because I just love them that way. It's one of the few "girly" things about me.

I hate long nails and always bite mine off. I think long nails would just look weird and out of the ordinary. I am, however, trying to get in better shape physically and loose some of the weight I gained in college.

My nails are short and ugly, and I don't have much hope for changing that, but I do know what you mean.  I have this cut on the back of my left hand that I've been trying desperately to get rid of before I have any reasons to take pictures of that hand...
