Found my dress! Should I order a smaller size?

I started dress shopping 5 weeks ago and I've found the one! I should be sooo excited but instead I'm nervous. I'm already down 20lbs in 5 weeks and my goal is another 30. I am ordering my dress tomorrow and am not sure if I should order a size smaller or order the size I am now?

By the time my dress comes in in Dec., I will be down another 30lbs...I'm averaging about 3lbs a week now. I dont want to look a mess in my dress if I get the wrong size. How many sizes can the seamstress take the dress in?

Re: Found my dress! Should I order a smaller size?

  • I don't know how much the seamstress can take it in--I'm sure it depends on the style of the dress and how much fabric it has when it arrives.  You should really ask the store you are ordering from.  Congrats on your weight loss!  However, weight loss does slow down when you start getting near your goal--have you ever heard people talk about those "last 10 pounds?"  I'd really caution against ordering much smaller than would fit right now-I understand you're still losing, and maybe ordering one size down from what fits now would work for you, but more than that would be a huge risk.

20lbs in 5 week is 4lbs a week.  That's not average and I would expect that to slow down if you are doing it in a healthy manner now (ie. diet and exercies and not pills/extreme fads/etc).

With that said, I would order the size you fit into now.
  • Check and see how much it can be taken in, but seriously, weight loss slows as you lose more and more and with stress and parties and holidays, who knows what can happen. Order the size that fits you now.

  • Probably the best choice would be to have a corset. It will be the easier way as whether you lose or gain weights, you still have the chance to fit into it.

    Just my opinion :)

1-2 pounds is average, so don't be surprised or disappointed if it slows even more.  What are you doing that you are having such success?!

<div>I am doing a program called Ideal Protein. My friend has been very successful with it. She has lost 50 lbs in 4.5 months and has kept the weight off for 4 years now. I saw her for the first time in 5 yrs and I just had to know what she did! I will lose about 8-10 lbs p month. That's just how it will work. So I know by for a fact by Dec. I will reach my goal regardless of what others say or think. :) I will not be disappointed at all!</div><div>

  • I agree with what others have posted- it's not worth the stress incase weight loss doesn't go as planned. It's great that you're committed and confident about your weight goal, but, like others have said..sometimes thinks don't happen the way you want. It sounds like you want people to tell you to get a smaller size the way that you're responding...

<div>Just want people to give their opinions.  I was going to order according to the size I am now, but friends are telling me to order smaller...just wanted to know if that makes sense or if I should stick with my inital plan.</div>

I think people gave you some opinions that you shouldnt order 1 or 2 sizes smaller, you should order what fits you now...

  • You may want to ask the shop how to alter the dress you love and what you will need for alterations. If it is easy to alter, then ordering your current size makes a lot of sense. But if it isn't easy to alter, it would be good to know that going in. I'm not suggesting ordering a smaller size, but rather knowing in advance if the alterations are going to be super expensive. And it's not just the bodice either; if you have any detail along the bottom it may not be able to be shortened easily. Congratulations on your weight loss and finding your gown!

<div>Good idea! Thank you so much! I'm so happy about my weight loss, but I'm also trying to avoid expensive alterations! I don't have detail along the bottom so I hope alterations will be pretty simple.</div><div>

  • The problem with ordering a size smaller is that you may not shrink in each area the same.

I lost 25lbs after trying on dresses, and I still wore the same size because of my ribcage, chest and shoulders. My waist and hips were a size smaller.

    <div>Good point...something I didn't think of. </div><div>
</div><div><span style="color:#000000;font-family:Arial, verdana, sans-serif;font-size:12px;line-height:normal;background-color:#ffffff;">Two weeks ago I went to try on my dream wedding dress in a sample size I had to squeeze into.</span>

<span style="color:#000000;font-family:Arial, verdana, sans-serif;font-size:12px;line-height:normal;background-color:#ffffff;">Today, I went back to the boutique and ordered my wedding dress! The consultant asked me if I wanted to try the sample on again and I said sure.</span>

<span style="color:#000000;font-family:Arial, verdana, sans-serif;font-size:12px;line-height:normal;background-color:#ffffff;">I reminded her how tight it was 2 weeks ago. I put the dress on and it fit perfectly!!! She and I both stared in amazement! The cousultant suggested that I order 1 size up from the sample (which is 1 size smaller than what I currently wear) to make sure I have enough coverage for my girls on top! </span>
Order what fits now!  I lost 30 pounds between buying my dress and my wedding - my seamstress was able to take it in no problems.  Seriously, you'd much rather have the problem of your dress being too big than being too small - there are a ton of ways to work around too big, and not nearly as many as too small. Plus, as others mentioned, your weight loss slows down as you lose more, so while you can certainly aim to lose the additional weight, it might come off slower.
    Posted by kwitherington
This. I lost 40 lbs AFTER buying my wedding dress. I had a total of 4 inches (and counting) taken out. I lost 15-20 lbs right away. It took me almost 4-5 months to lose the other 20 lbs. I hit plateaus and my weight loss simply just slowed down. Order what fits you now and find a good seamstress. If the bridal shop is doing the alterations for you (mine is) make sure they know your intention is to lose an additional 30 lbs that way when the dress comes in they can get you in right away for a fitting.
