re: cops- I HATE when they flip their lights on to go through a red light. We live only a few blocks from a police station and they do it all the time at the one intersection. (Which has a reallllyyyy long green in one direction, but whenever they do that it just effs up the cycle and everyone else has to wait even longer.)
    Posted by Steph+J
I'm still on the first page (just got back from lunch) but this reminded me of an argument I got into with my H. He doesn't think that the police lights affect whether the light is red or green. I said to him "How many times have you seen an ambulance waiting at a stoplight? Their lights change the streetlights so they can get through quickly". He still thinks it's bunk, and asked me to prove it, but I am not a friggin' scientist and it was a petty argument to begin with, so I just let it die. I still think that the streetlights change for police cars when their lights are running. You see it all the friggin' time. And shouldn't he know better? His dad was a cop and he was a military policeman, so uhhh WTF?

Sorry, this topic makes me a little ragey.

I thought they had a sensor in their car that they could push and it changed? Similar to the concept of the buttons on the poles for walkers.
  • I thought anyone could flash their high beams on it to make it switch?

Ok, and now my UO: I absolutely cannot stand all the political shiiiit on FB. I have a relative (my mom's 1st husband, the man who walked me down the aisle at my wedding) who does nothing but post political memes all day, every day. I love the man, but goddamn, he has a new cause to support/argue every week. Last week it was gun control and the Aurora shooting. This week it's Chik-fil-A. I just want to look at him and shake my head and say "Sheep...".

And am I the only one who is surprised that F21 hasn't been dragged into this whole Chik-Fil-A/religious thing? They print "John 3:16" on the bottom of every one of their shopping bags.

Pet Peeve: People who ask me a question and aren't patient enough for me to come up with a solution. For instance, a CW asked me what they should do for a certain person who is trying to bend the rules. I said "Hmmm..." and rubbed my chin (clearly in thought) and she goes "That's all you have to say? 'Hmmmm...'?". Slow your roll, lady, I was thinking. My H does this sometimes, too and it really bothers me. Like he'll ask me if I want to eat lunch in the caf and I'll tell him what they're serving (as if that'll decide whether or not we want to eat there) and he'll be like "That's not what I asked you". Uh ok, fuckface, thanks for making me like like a dumbshit. You can eat in the caf by yourself then.

ETA: Re-reading my post, I realize my UO is much more of a pet peeve, so you get two of my pet peeves, then. Hrumph...

  • I had no idea cops could change the lights from their cars. Shows how much I know. I did read once that if you're in an elevator, you could press the 'close door' button and hold it as you press the floor number and it would go straight to the floor without stopping (apparently so paramedics or cops could get up faster). But I haven't yet been able to actually test that.
  • Ah well of 3M makes it then it would make sense that we have a fuckton of them here, since mn is 3Ms homebase. Erin it honestly is more ridiculous than scary. He's a doofus and annoying.

  • Has F21 come out with anti gay propaganda though? I don't see anything wrong with a store quietly showing their religious affiliation like that. I could be totally wrong and they could hate gays, but Christian does not equal gay haters always. Although I do find it amusing that half their clothes are less than modest and they still put that on their shopping bags haha.

Supposedly. I've tried it only once but I'm pretty sure there was just no one else around, which is why it didn't stop. Any other time, other people have been in the elevator and that would be weird to try it then.

Oh I completely agree. When I brought that up, it was more of a business-pushing-their-religion-on-others sort of thing, not a gay-hating thing. And tbh, I think I've seen at least one gay dude working at F21 every time I've been in one over the past two years. I'm sure F21 is much more accepting, but I have never once heard people bringing them into the business/religion argument like they have with Chik-Fil-A.

WHY DO YOU GUYS ALWAYS DO THE GOOD STUFF WHEN I'M NOT AROUND?

UO: I think it's total horseshit that it's ok to judge how a person with extra money spends theirs, but if a person with less, or not well off, is judged for how they spend money, it becomes a ZOMG YOU CAN'T JUDGE THEM, YOU DON'T KNOW THEIR SITUATION. I also hate the line (someone used it earlier about the Olympics) how "people shouldn't spend so much money on X, there's so many better things that could be done with that money." Really, who gives a shiiiit, and who gets a say so in what the "better cause" is? The other thing kind of recent on TK that reminds me of this is the re-hashing ring topic. If someone posts a pic of a big e-ring, no-one says boo if people comment "it's pretty, but I wouldn't want a ring that big." First I call BS, and second if someone posted a pic of a small ring and someone else said "it's pretty, but I wouldn't want a ring that tiny" they'd be chased off the boards with Steffi's bear mace.

Pet Peeve/Grievance: The fact that it's trendy/hip/cool for people to take pictures barefoot. I have never once wandered around an old dilapidated, falling down house and thought "well gee whiz, I bet this place it way more awesome with my shoes off." it's more likely "eek, I hope the soles on my shoes are thick...when was the last time I had my tetanus shot." Or walking around a park with no shoes on for pictures. Really? Walking around a shiiiiiit filled duck pond with your shoes off seemed like a good idea? When there isn't a camera around how many times have you thought to moisturize your tootsies with goose shiiiit? i'm guessing never. When you're an adult, you're supposed to wear shoes, even when you are getting a picture taken.

  • Dmill, the peeves part just cracked me up. We think alike when it comes to feet. For me though, it's mainly because I find feet gross.

I wear flip flops when I walk around at the beach because I'm always afraid I'm going to slice my feet open. I noticed today that I don't like the feeling of getting my feet wet in flip flops when walking through dewy grass in the morning. I tip toe the ish out of my feet until I get on pavement. I'm strange.
I had no idea cops could change the lights from their cars. Shows how much I know. I did read once that if you're in an elevator, you could press the 'close door' button and hold it as you press the floor number and it would go straight to the floor without stopping (apparently so paramedics or cops could get up faster). But I haven't yet been able to actually test that.

Now this sounds interesting. I have a small cleaning company and have to use elevators in office buildings quite often. Granted, I typically clean after hours so not much hold up in the elevators but I am soooo trying this at my next cleaning!
