In Response to Re: I am feeling judgemental : I judge people who don't use all of the roadway available, and just cause more traffic back up. ;) EVEN MNDOT SAYS TO. So there. (I get in this argument with people all the time.)  I mean. I'm not one of those people who's going to toe-the-line and wait until the last possible second. But I'm also not going to merge when I first see the sign either, if I know there are 3 miles of drivable lane left either. If they wanted you to merge into the other lane 3 miles before, they would've ended the lane 3 miles ago.
Posted by Steph+J
<div>No, they warned you 3 miles ago so that you have time to move safely over into the flow of traffic in the remaining lanes. Zippering is fine when two lanes merge to just one, but on a highway with four lanes going down to three, the other two lanes are still going 60MPH and the only delay is the lane beside the ending lane because some fuckface tries to blow past at 90MPH and then cut everyone off at the last second. </div>
• Stef- I judge the drinking age too.  But I think it should be higher, lol.

I don't know why but I just got wicked deja vu, so if I've said this before I am sorry. I judge people who aren't aware of noises they or their property makes. People who are so inconsiderate as to be regularly loud or let their dogs back all night or be obnoxiously loud an inopportune times should be throat punched. I'm very sensitive to noises and its a constant annoyance to me and I assume they are the worst people on the planet.
• Maybe we're looking at the merging differently then. Because here, it's one of two things:

1. everyone tries to cram over in the first few feet of the 'lane ending' sign, which forces all lanes to slow down.

2. People actually USE the damn ending lane to get up to speed and use that 3 miles to find a safe spot to merge.
• I think people who use mass transit should be able to drink at work. I'd find a bus or train to get me here if I knew I could pop one open at 3pm. :)

<div>That makes sense, Steph. Here most people use the lane to get up to speed and merge well before, so that traffic flow isn't interrupted, but then a few asssholes ruin it by flying to the very end of the lane and cutting people off, causing that lane to slow down. My particular commute has a lane that ends, without being an onramp lane for about 3 miles. The lane that's closest to the lane ending then turns into an exit lane, so people need to get through both those lanes to continue on that highway. So jerks not only cut off people in that lane, but also people in the next lane who aren't exiting in the next .5 mile. It's amazing when it backs up and no one lets the asshole over then HE flips you the bird. And 99.999% of the time the fuckingfuck is texting or talking on the phone and fidgeting with the radio. </div>

NO. We're doing it right. I mean, even here if someone flies up at 90mph, they'll still get cockblocked. But for the most part, USE THE DAMN LANES THAT ARE AVAILABLE.

I'm obviously sensitive to this, but where I used to live had this 3 mile (no joke, thanks Bec) on/off lane. People used to try to get over in the first two feet to the exit lane (even though there was a steady stream of cars actually driving in the lane trying to eventually merge onto the highway.)  That just caused this awful backup. When 500 feet ahead, the lane was empty. That freaking lane is 3 miles for a reason, assholes.
In Response to Re: I am feeling judgemental : I think voting, military and drinking age should be 19. And for me, it's 19 because I don't think high school students should be able to legally drink, and pretty much most kids are out of high school at 19. PS eta - there is a difference between having an opinion on a lower drinking age and yelling at a server who won't break the law to serve you, IMO.

I'm not sure, since schools are constantly changing their admissions policies. My birthday is in early September and I started kindergarten in CA, so maybe that's why it seems I graduated a year early. In my HS, it was actually more abnormal for students to be 19 when they graduated than 17.

And I'd say that in the almost 10 years that I've been in, I've met quite a few folks who joined at age 17. It's just that some of them chose to do basic training the summer before senior year, then once they graduated they went active duty. I'm not sure how long they were allowing folks to do that, though, since we were hurting for recruits back in the day way more than we are now.

• LHT, yup, I had to have both parent's sign a waiver in order for me to enlist.

I remember my lead company commander (drill sergeant) at boot camp had joined when he was 17 and he made it to E-7 in less than 10 years. That gave me hope, but alas, I'm only an E-5 at 10 years.

Same here. Started kindergarten in CA, moved to MN where the cutoff date is much earlier, so I was the youngest in my class through high school and into college. I'm not sure if it's unique to CA, but the only 17-year-old grads I knew were from CA.

I don't know how I feel about the drinking age. On one hand, I totally agree with the mostly European idea that you introduce alcohol gradually so kids respect it and don't see it as a "forbidden fruit." But on the other hand, binge drinking before age 20 has major effects on the brain. Although it's not like legality is going to stop teens from drinking.
