Tattoos.

Re: Tattoos.

  • I don't have any and wouldn't get any.

My little brother told everyone when he turned 18, he was going to get the ALOHA monkey tattoo (Google it if you'd like, NSFW) and "THUG LIFE" across his stomach. Luckily, he didn't.

I'm late in the game but I have a lot...

What is it/are they of? My last name, two hearts, lillies, italian script and a koi fish

Where is it? my last name is in script on my lower back, one heart on the top of each foot, the lilies on my side, the script on my upper back, and the koi on the thigh

Why'd you get it/them? I'm not gonna explain them all because it'd be a novel, so I'll tell ya about my two favorites.

My dad was an avid gardener, and I was big into photography. After he passed away I was looking through a box of pictures and found one I had taken of some orange lillies he planted. I got those on my side, along with his name and dates.

I got the koi piece on my right thigh. My ex had given me a painting one birthday that I loved. Its a multicolored koi, waves, and a cherry blossom tree. It represented change and rebirth, and I was at a point in my life where those themes meant a lot to me.

What was the actual being tattoo'd experience like? A rush of adrenaline. The back and feet didn't hurt. My thigh got a little tender towards the end, it took about 12 hours separated over two sittings. But, the lillies on my side were awful. It was the worst pain ever, I cried like a baby and I don't reccomend it to anyone who is thinking of getting one on your side as a first tattoo.

Do you regret it? Not at all. I got them from a few different shops, and I wish I found the guy that did my thigh a lot earlier cause I love his work. The shop that did the lillies messed up on the dates, which they fixed, but it was a hassle and should have been caught before they started. I actually can't wait to get more.

Any additional tattoo-related advice you have to give? Don't get one before thinking about the consequences. I knew I would probably need to cover them up for any job, and while I have them in places that make this easy to do, it can still be a bit of a struggle. I have a few cute shirts and dresses that I love, but don't wear to work because they expose the one on my upper back.

  • I agree with Jenn in regards to be able to hide them. Also, think about getting them places that aren't going to be affected by gaining/losing weight like when (if) you have a baby so they don't get distorted.  (Although that doesn't happen to everyone depends on your skin)

A friend of mine's son got KISS ME tattooed on the inside of his lower lip, and upside down so when he pulls his lip out and over, it is readable by whomever he's showing it to.  He says he picks up tons of women at bars with that; I just nod in agreement...  lol

One, that seems like it would hurt a lot. Two, I really hope someone would tell me if my idea for one was quite that...well....you know.
  • If you have one:

What is it/are they of? AND Where is it?
I have 2 - One is on my right side and is Chinese Cherry Blossoms with lettering that says "beautiful but fragile". Representing Life, Love and just about everything.  The second and most recent is on my inside wrist and in white writing (it is more or less invisible unless I show it to you) it says "she flies with her own wings" in Latin

    Why'd you get it/them?
I had just always wanted them and the sayings mean a lot to me

What was the actual being tattoo'd experience like?
The side wasn't too bad but the wrist hurt really bad.

    Do you regret it?
    Not at all

Any additional tattoo-related advice you have to give?
Really think about what you are getting, get something that has personal meaning, not just something for the sake of doing it

    ETA: Bonus for pics!

My brother is hell bent on getting a tattoo in honour of his Irish heritage, despite being told MANY times... were scottish. Weve stopped arguing him and at this point are encouraging him to get it, so that we can make fun of him afterwards. My brother is an idiot.

  • If you don't:

Would you ever consider it?  I've thought about it on and off

What would it be of, and where would you get it, if you were to get one?  Would get a  small cupid below my wasit line. Have considered the eternity symbol on ring finger or wedding date.....

What is it/are they of? It's a maori half sleeve.

Where is it? Down my arm.

Why'd you get it/them? I got it the day I scattered my grandmothers ashes, because she forbid me to cut off my hair.

What was the actual being tattoo'd experience like? My experience can't be used to make a decision about whether or not to undergo the process, because it is different than the average tattoo. Mine was a 8.5 hour custom draw on the arm, followed immediately by a 12.5 hour ink session. It was an ritual tattoo and was treated as such by the artist. It hurt, all tattoos do, to some degree. I went from itching, to burning, to pinching sensations, to flat out trance state with no pain at all. Someone asked me a question and I came out of the trance-like state in time to look down and see the last few inched of fill work on the point of my shoulder. That part truly hurt, because my body was so done producing endorphins by then.

Do you regret it? No, but in retrospect, I would have just done the line work around the edges. Instead of a solid fill, I would have chosen to 'fill' with something like a filigree version of the same design. If that makes any sense. While the design if very flowing, it does have a chunkiness about it. But, the artist saw me as a very strong person, so he chose to do a very bold design and I accepted it.

Any additional tattoo-related advice you have to give?

Getting a tattoo: Don't ever pick something from flash (the sample stuff on the artists wall). Artists sell flash in shops all over the world. If you walk in and pick a Leo Zulueta tribal blackwork turtle, you can bet that there are hundreds of other people with the exact same tattoo.

After care: Contrary to many/most artists after care instructions, the best way to care for a tat is the following.  Go home immediately, remove and throw away the covering the artist taped on. Get in the shower, use a soft stream and increase the heat until comfortably hot. Let the hot water run over the area for 15-20 minutes. Blot dry with clean towel. Blot again with a lint-free paper towel wet with the amber-colored Listerine. It does not sting. Let me repeat that, it does not sting. Your skin is not mucous membrane and the alcohol in it isn't enough to burn like when you use it as a mouthwash. Then cover with a very thin layer of A+D ointment. Repeat the Listerine treatment and A+D every time it starts to weep.

Repeat the hot water treatment as often as possible while it's weeping. Don't let the weeping liquid ever dry on the tat. Overall, keep the area moistened with A+D until after the tat sheds a fine colored lace of skin. Then move to your favorite lotion.

     ETA: Bonus for pics!

OK, so I don't actually have any pics showing the whole thing, and it turns out to be impossible to photograph a half sleeve by holding the camera in your opposite hand. So, this anatomically confusing pic was taken by holding my camera above my head, and looking down the arm towards my wrist.

  • Thanks again for all the posts guys, they've been really informative.

Petra: Thanks for the heads up about the after care, I'll be sure to do that if I do go through with this!
  • What is it/are they of? Shooting star, fairy sitting on the moon, drama masks and music notes

Where is it? Hip, Shoulder, Lower back (tramp stamp!)

Why'd you get it/them? The fairy is representative of the first "novel" I wrote at 7, it's about my writing basically, shooting star just because I was 15 and I'm a dreamer, drama masks and music notes because theatre is a passion of mine

What was the actual being tattoo'd experience like? The hip and back hurt. The shoulder was a breeze. The outline hurt more than anything else

Do you regret it? I don't like some of the coloring on the back one. I would have given more specific instructions.

Any additional tattoo-related advice you have to give? I would really consider your professional goals. H has tattoos from elbow to wrist on both arms. He can never wear short sleeves and always has to be aware of whether or not they are showing.

  • If you have one:

What is it/are they of?  I have one and it is my sorority's flower with my chapter's Greek letters.

Where is it?  On my left hip area

Why'd you get it/them?  To constantly remind myself what my sorority taught me, that I have sisters, etc (all that cheesey stuff)

What was the actual being tattoo'd experience like?  Painful at points but fun.  My artist was great and my friends were there with me.

    Do you regret it?  No

Any additional tattoo-related advice you have to give?  Get something that means something to you, do your research to find someone good, and relax.

<div>Yup, it's a fan-freakin-tastic sterilizer and because it's formulated for mucous membranes it isn't too harsh or drying. The amber-colored one doesn't have menthol on it, or any other mint derivative. Mint in a cut stings like bjtch. I also recommend using it as a soak for any type of fine puncture wound. Step on a nail? Get bit by a pet snake? Get your hand caught in a mechanical wool comb? Yeah, I've used it for all of these and more.</div><div>
</div><div>The hot shower forces the body to flood the irritated area with 'weep' in an hurry, so when you get out of the shower, you get a nice window before it starts weeping again. Dry weep = scab = scar. Glad to hear the shower thing is catching on. When I had my tat done, it was forbidden. No shower, no hot water for 3-4 days. The guy who did my ink work pushed the shower idea very hard in the industry. it works great. After a week, I got out of the shower, patter dry and the entire tat shed a fine black lace of top skin and that was it. Fully healed tattoo, all at once.</div><div>

  • If you have one:

What is it/are they of?  It's 2 intertwined dragons in mirror image, an eclipse fading down (up?) to a pink/blue/purple sunset over a desert with the album artwork from Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" (man on fire) reconfigured to have him on fire on one side but holding a fish bowl with a gold fish in his opposite hand.

Where is it?  It covers most of my back, but the dragon wings are still outlines since I haven't figured out how I want them finished yet.

Why'd you get it/them?  I'd always wanted one and got this started about 8 years ago.  "Wish You Were Here" is my favorite song, and dragons rule.

What was the actual being tattoo'd experience like?  Not too bad, except for the tiny detail work that was concentrated in one spot for a really long time.  Other than that, it's pretty easy to get into the groove of it and just let it happen.

Do you regret it?  I do not regret getting my tattoo, but I do regret the size of it.  I should have gotten it about 1/2 or 2/3 as big as it is.

Any additional tattoo-related advice you have to give?  Don't put one in a place you can't cover if you need to.  Anything that peeks out over a collar or below the cuffs can limit you professionally.  Also, don't get the name/face of anyone you're not related to by blood put on you, it's a curse on your relationship.

And no swastikas on the forehead.

  • If you have one:

What is it/are they of? I have a moon and stars on my neck, a sun and moon on my lower back, a four leaf clover on my right ankle, the libra scales on my left calf and a memorial tattoo on my foot for my grandfather.

    Where is it? see above.

Why'd you get it/them? After the first one, I honestly fell in love with them.  All of them represent something about me and my life.

What was the actual being tattoo'd experience like? The only one that really hurt was the one on my foot.  It's also the one that means the most, however.

Do you regret it?  Not at all.

Any additional tattoo-related advice you have to give?  Really thing through what you want to get.  My brother got some tribal band around his arm that he is now considering getting removed.  Check into the shops reputation and their cleanliness.

    The tattoo for my grandfather....

  • If you have one:

What is it/are they of? Trinity symbol on my front right hip, "hope" on the inside of my right foot ( below my ankle), "faith" on the inside of my left foot (below my ankle), cross with vines and flowers and the lower left hand side of my back

Where is it? see answer above

Why'd you get it/them? Trinity symbol bc it stand for 3 as one so me and my two sisters got it bc we are the 3 and my mom got it bc she is what connects us so it is a family thing. the "hope" and "faith" so i remember to never loose hope and life and to always have faith that no matter how bad it gets things will always work themselves out. The cross is to show my beliefs.

What was the actual being tattoo'd experience like? A little painful and nerve-racking but worth it

    Do you regret it? No

Any additional tattoo-related advice you have to give? make sure you know what you want and that you can live with it for the rest of your life. I waited a min of 6 months after I decided what I wanted before I got the tattoo so i was sure it was what i wanted.
  • I have 4 tattoos... one on my wrist so it is not in your face, but it's there. It's a swirl of hearts about 6 inches long. This is the only one I ever thought about regretting because in a sense, it appears immature, but in the end, I got it at a time in my life that I needed to remember where my heart was in life, so I think about the reason of why I got it and I'm okay with it. My other tattoos are in non-visible locations on my body (side, back and hip), so unless you really know me or see me at the beach, they are for myself and my fiance to see.
So my advice for those of you thinking about getting a tattoo is to make sure it actually means something significant to you, and it's not just a picture of winnie-the-pooh or something everyone else has that you think is "cute".
  • I have 3. A chinese character on my ankle, a set of shamrocks on my upper back/shoulder blade and and two flowers on my wrist.

I got the first one when I was 18. I just wanted a tattoo and I went with a couple of girlfriends who also got inked.

For me, everytime I've gone to get them I stand in the waiting room and feel a mix of anxiety and excitedness. I know it's going to hurt but I am also looking forward to the end result.

I don't really regret getting the tattoos in general, just some regret over what kind of tattoo I got. Really, just the first one. It's the chinese character on my ankle which I picked off the wall when it was trendy at the age of 18. I chalk it up to not knowing what the hell I was doing. At the time I really wanted to get a tattoo but didn't put much thought into what it would be. I am arranging to have this one covered up with something else soon.

As far as advice, take plenty of time to think about whether you really want one (obviously it's permanent) and spend a good deal of time considering what you want. My theory is, that if you get something that is truly meaningful to you, you'll always enjoy having it. Also, if you decide to get one, research the places where you'll be getting it done. Pick a place that's clean and that has artists who truly are artists and don't just stencil things off the wall. Finally, listen to the instructions on how to take care of your tattoo as far as cleaning it and making sure it heals correctly.

I'm sorry if some of this is a repeat of other comments I have to rush out and pick up FI and couldn't read everything.

    Good Luck!

    What is it/are they of?
I have two: A tiara and angel wings on my right hip bone and the word "Breathe" on my left wrist in white

    Why'd you get it/them?
Honestly the first one (the angel wings) was a spur-of-the-moment type of thing. I said "Hmm I think I might want a tattoo" and my roomate was like "Let's go get one then," and I said "Okay." The second one was supposed to be a reminder to slow down and take it easy. I get stressed really easily.

What was the actual being tattoo'd experience like?
I'm terrified of needles to it was pretty scary the first time around. It hurt but not as bad as you might think but I was so nervous that I was all hot and clammy the whole time.

    Do you regret it?
I don't even think about them anymore but the first time I saw myself without clothes on (like the day after I got my first one) I cried hysterically wondering why the hell I did it. Eventually I started to really like it but I'm thinking of getting it removed because it never really meant anything to begin with.

Any additional tattoo-related advice you have to give?
It was important to me to get them where no one can see them for multiple reasons. As far as getting them goes, relax your body, it will hurt a lot less if you're not tense. Also, it really helped me to have a friend with me to distract me.
  • If you have one:

What is it/are they of? I have a sun with a pieces symbol in the middle on my upper left shoulder.

Where is it? Upper left shoulder

Why'd you get it/them? Cause my mom told me not to and I thought it would be cool at 19

What was the actual being tattoo'd experience like? I acutally don't remember it...so I can't say if it hurt. I am sure it did some at the time, but being that was 11 years ago...I just don't remember the pain...

Do you regret it? Yup. And I am answering this post partly because I am in the process of getting it removed. So...it just seemed like a bit of a different perspective. Getting tattoos removed is 100 times more expensive than getting the stupid thing in the first place. It takes a long time and it is painful. Both during and for a couple hours afterward. So...advice, which is coming next...just be 100% certain of what you want and where you are getting it.

Any additional tattoo-related advice you have to give?  So...repeat - be certain. I thought my shoulder would be easy enough to hide...but it isn't In Texas it is freakin' hot, any time I wear anything sleeveless you can see it. A lot of my friends have really awesome tattoos that are totally them, their personality, etc. Mine is not me...I don't know if it ever was. So just really think it through. I think it is really smart that you are having a friend design it...then giving it six months.

And AFTERCARE. I agree. My friends with really bad-a** tatts took really good care of them, and they are very vibrant. And do your research on your tattoo artist, that can make a huge amount of difference as well.
  • What is it/are they of? I have 9; On the back of my neck, on my shoulder, on my lower back, on my hip, on the other side of my back, on my ankles, on my chest. The back of my neck is a heart with tribal, on my shoulder is an Autism ribbon, my lower back is a tramp stamp, on my hip is my FI's name, other side of my hip is a heart with tribal, on my ankles are my maiden name, my youngest's name, a tat my FI and I got together symbolizing us being Gemini's and an M for our initials and on my right boob is 2 hearts with my older 2 boys names.

    Where is it? See above

Why'd you get it/them? Mainly because I wanted them, obviously. The most meaningful one is my Autism tattoo to represent my devotion to the disability and for my son TJ. The names have a clear definition and the others, I just really loved the designs.

What was the actual being tattoo'd experience like? It's a natural high, and addictive! Of course it's not without pain, but for me it's a good pain.

Do you regret it? The only one I regret is the small heart with tribal on the one side of my back. I got it when I was 16 in a tattoo shop in the Village in NYC and it looks pretty damn bad now, 14 years later!

Any additional tattoo-related advice you have to give? Be absolutely sure that you want it! It's not something that is easily taken off. Also consider placement. I work in corporate America, and every single one of my tattoos can be covered.
  • I cant tell you how many I have because Ive stoped counting Haha

What is it/are they of? Where is it?:  i have a Dragon protecting a rainbow heart Covering my entire back, 7 stars on my left arm and a snail on my left wrist, a peace symbol on my right wrist, a biohazerd symbol on the back of my neck, a star behind my left ear a base cleft behine my right ear, Gir from Invader Zim on my calf, a broken heart with wings that has a chain around my right ankle, and a lilly on the inside of my left ankel..

Why'd you get them?: Most of my tattoos ive designed myslfe or workd with my artest on exactly what I wanted, not all of them mean somthing profound, I find its more expression of ones self.

What was the actual being tattoo'd experience like?  Personaly The only 2 that really hurt bady were my back piece and the one on my ankel, but thats because its right over the bone. other then that i find getting tattooed to be relaxing

Do you regret it? No, When I look at certain tattoos Im reminded of a time in my life when I felt a certain way, some of thoes not being good feelings at all. and I remember I made it out of that time in my life and it reminds me of how far ive come
Pluse I decied at a young age I want my body to be covered in tattoos haha

Any additional tattoo-related advice you have to give?  Make sure you go someplace clean, dont get tattoed by an aprentice unless you have absolute faith in them! as for that matter dont get tattoed by anyone you dont trust!

  • What is it/are they of? I have a tramp stamp, a paisley (dog's name) on my inner ankle, gerber daisies on my right rib cage, and lotus and cherry blossoms on my left shoulder blade

    Where is it?

    Why'd you get it/them? I wanted them

What was the actual being tattoo'd experience like? The actual tattooing happens in spurts of 5-7 seconds. Depending on where, it feels like a needle dragging on your skin (duh) but doesn't really hurt a lot. The pain ends at the end of each spurt. And then your skin gets tired and irritated and it burns. Laying there bored is the worst part, in my opinion.

    Do you regret it? No

Any additional tattoo-related advice you have to give? Nah. Just make sure you want it. I made sure to get all of mine in places I can easily cover.
