Seshat- when did you realize you wanted to be a writer. And how did you get started. My DH is a wonderful writer, people love his blog, and he wants to write a book just doesnt know where to start. Any good suggestions?

Jasmine--how on earth can you say 65 is the perfect temperature? That is FREEZING! I must disagree and say that 75 is just right.

Fiction or nonfiction for your DH?

Honestly, I've always wanted to write. I started when I was in elementary school with crappy little 7-page stories I thought were masterpieces. it's the one thing I always come back to. I tried everything, girl scouts, gymnastics, etc, nothing makes me happy like writing does. Eventually, the more I wrote the better I got, and the more I learned how to actually put a sotry together (whether by reading, learning technical elements in class, etc).

It all starts with an idea. I don't think you have to have the entire story thought through to begin, I rarely do. And even if you do the story can change. In my first book, I killed off a character I absolutely loved when I originally meant to kill someone else. It just didn't work out that way in the end. So I suggest just sitting down and getting it started, not worrying about what happens next or at the end, just working in the now. Usually once you get started it just sort of flows out of you and you let the story guide you to the next scene. I don't know if that makes sense, but it's how I work.

It also helps to have a clear idea of who your characters are before starting.

<div>I'm not Jasmine, but I've got to disagree. 65 is perfect. However, when it's below freezing 9 months out of the year, and hits 80 maybe two weeks out the year, I think you develop a different sense of what comfortable is.</div>

I would say 65 is perfect because I can wear a dress, or jeans, or shorts, and go and enjoy the day. If there is no wind, I don't need a jacket. 

If it is above 30F, then I don't think it's that cold. When it gets around 50, I'll grab a coat. Conversely, if it is over 80, I want to die.

I'm currently working for my parents. They're both business owners and work out of the same storefront: My mom does interior design, my step dad owns a plumbing business. I do invoices, answer the phone, order inventory (we carry high end bathroom stuff, like towels and soaps and whatnot, it smells so good in here). The usual kind of secretary-ish stuff.

It was originally a temporary thing, since we initially planned to file for a fiance visa in January, so I didn't apply to school or anything here. We ended up not filing until June of this year, so I'm just working to save some money for the wedding.

I'm planning on applying to college as soon as I can once I'm in the States. I've already put it off too long =)

I work for an electronics company, in the accounting department.  I'm accounts payable, accounts receivable, manager of foreign accounts, purchasing, and pretty much anything else you could possibly imagine.  I describe my position as "office bitch."

He wants to write fiction. He writes for a living as you do, but he believes there is a book in him. I know I enjoy reading his writings. But he reads a lot of biographies, and technical books. I think he should read some fiction, and get an idea of where he wants to take his story.

He knows it will have something to do with the military (his background), and some sort of espionage. He just needs to make time to write.
