Re: Stupid Wedding Industry

  • Arod- I agree about the customs thing.

    Gobos = wtf?
  • Anna-how wonderful that your Dad was so able to participate.
    LC-great bouquet

    My dislikes--forced dances, garter toss, strippers, lap dances, "wedding-y" anything really. Any with lace or ribbons on it that shouldn't usuallly have them, like knives and glasses. Clinking of glasses in order to get the couple to kiss. I have lots, those are just some of them.

    Ya. I have no idea what GOBO stands for.....when my lighting company first asked if I wanted one it was a head scratching moment.
  • aprovencher- I said nothing judgmental about how other people spend money. The subject is what bugs us about the wedding industry, not people. What I said is no different than what others have said about frilly guestbooks or monograms. I really don't care how others spend money.

  • Ok I'll bite, GoBo = what?

    I think the thing that is tricky about culture customs is sometimes it's hard to see. For instance if you just looked at pics you probably wouldn't see Native American in my face or dress, but we used readings and much of the ceremony was drawing from that culture because it is a big part of my daily life.

    I agree that it's silly of someone to use something just because it's trendy or cool, but why shouldn't people be able to appreciate a reading just because it's not their culture?

    Um ya you did judge. You said its "wasteful" to have an elaborate cake design since its "just a cake." This implies money is better spent on something else. This is a different type of judging. While I may not like ribbons on toasting flutes or cake knives I wouldn't say that's wasteful since it's just a cake knife.

    Lighting option that is usually a monogram, phrase, design or something that's displayed on the dance floor or wall. I have an example of mine in my bio.

    [QUOTE]Oh.. I dislike guests books and cake cutting utensils, but that's been discussed. I'm currently hating wedding albums that are re-donk-ulously priced ($2000) and "tells the story of the couple's love as it began to the wedding day." <--- please read that in a singsong voice. My parents don't even know where their wedding album is! I just want some nice pictures to frame and a reasonably priced album. Seriously. I also really don't understand why no one will listen to me when I say I don't want/can't have a shower. Please listen to me.

  • I thought of another, wedding chair covers. Whoever thought those bad boys up? Seriously, if a chair is in rough shape, either rent nice chairs or don't have the reception there. Seriously, if you feel strongly enough about the chairs to think about putting ill fitting reems of taffeta into your wedding equation, then just please know there are other less agressive options.
  • Ah! I love all the answers...was hoping for a little more snark, but that's cool! And please, go ahead: judge, isn't that what this board is for? judge, snark, be downright mean - it makes for good reading.

    I agree with using other traditions that aren't yours, it's not okay! I'm in the position where neither FI nor I are religious, we have no family traditions to speak of so we're stuck without any cool ceremony things. That's life :)

    Love it! Chair covers make me think they're painting the room or something. I mean, I would never think to decorate my chairs at home with tulle or draped fabric.

  • When vendors try to sell you things and say things like "well it is YOUR day you should have the finest ..." I said I don't want to spend 700 on invitations or 3k on a wedding cake.

aprovecher- This is what I meant by the fondant cake. I gave a well-known wedding cake baker in my area a budget but when I told him about the simple decorations I wanted, he kept pushing and pushing more elaborate designs that I didn't want, think were necessary for me, and all of which required fondant. We ended up with a quote for a cake that was a hefty amount over our budget, and as it turned out, the cake wasn't even good.
