  • I will say. I think that the fact that everyone has their own view on the DP is what makes us great. We can all sit here and post our opinions and thoughts, and while we may not all agree on things, we can all appreciate it.

I respect that your views may not be the same as mine. That is what makes the world unique and interesting.

I just wanted to say that bc I didnt want it to come off as I am mad or angry that you dont agree with me. I just wanted to vent about this horrible crime.

Ok, I didn't get through the rest of the post yet, so sorry if this has been addressed, but those appeals?  Part of EVERYONE'S due process rights.  Per the Constitution.  You know, the Bill of Rights?  All that good stuff?  There's a good reason they allow those appeals.

I really think you're going a little far here. I'm all for executing somebody that's been proven guilty, but you're basing your entire "conviction" on a brief news video, not the entire story (Which I am quite sure you don't actually know). This is why trials are held in the first place, so people can't go around just invoking capital punishment willy-nilly on anybody they merely suspect of being a murderer.

And while the kid may have confessed, I've actually heard quite a few stories  (Especially ones involving teenagers) where people being detained were essentially forced to falsely confess to a crime they didn't commit because they were interrogated without an attorney or gaurdian present, and there was a lot of pressure was put on them to "wrap things up".

Plus, there's still some speculation that there were drugs involved and a possibility that this kid wasn't in a right state of mind.

If it turns out later on that yes, he really did kill this kid, and yes, he was fully aware of what he was doing, then fine-DP his ass. But until a judge and jury convict him in a court of law, he's well within his rights to live-and you're way over the line for saying otherwise..

[QUOTE]Based on the information in the article, it's also highly unlikely that he'll even get the death penalty.  He's 19, and he cooperated with police during search efforts.  My guess is he wouldn't have done that if there wasn't a lawyer and deal in place.

Age-wise - he is eligible for the DP.  He eventually cooperated, but initially he did not.  He first admitted to beating the guy up and had the police look for him, but it wasn't the field where he actually left the body.  In fact, he gave investigators several different stories about the entire crime.

Here's a link to the story in the local paper:

  • Capital punishment =/= eye for an eye.

If you're that interested in eye for an eye punishment, perhaps you should move to a less developed country.  There's a reason we don't rape rapists and cut off the hands of people that steal.

And?  Someone else has said it, but to reiterate, INNOCENT PEOPLE DO CONFESS.  You cannot just take a confession as fact that the person is guilty.

  • Isn't the "eye for an eye" type of mentality something we, as a developed and progressive nation, have tried to eliminate through due process? I agree with PP that perhaps a more archaic society would be better suited for you.

Very sad for the family.  Really sad all the way around - as pp post said he ended Josh's life and, essentially, his own, too.  DP or not, he will be in prison a very long time.

Right, and if he was hopped up on drugs, that would make sense.  There are a lot of stories circulating about this guy, and probably a lot of biased reporting (shocking.)  No one knows the facts until they come out in a trial.

    This. Exactly.

A few years ago, my cousin was shot and killed by a police officer. At the time, the papers immediately printed a story stating that my cousin had pulled a gun and threatened the cop with it. The police later showed my aunt and uncle the video footage taken from the cop car, and you don't actually see a gun anywhere ... and they later admitted that they never actually saw a gun or even found one on his person. Basically, they made a mistake. A very big, irrevocable mistake. But the papers never printed any type of retraction, and there are tons of people that still think my cousin "got what he deserved".

Because of this, I never fully trust what the media has to say.

My DP opinion is based mostly on the Constitutional rights, the financial burden of DP, and the fact that it does not deter crime, and in fact makes crime go up for a short period of time.

There's only a little bleeding heartness that comes out in the hypocrisy and "what if we kill an innocent person?" part of my opinion ;)

  • Do you really think that the information given in these articles are entirely what the case is based on? There is probably so much more information involved. (I use the word probably because I know nothing about this case). The police only release such a small amount of information to the media while there's so much going on behind the scenes.

Also, Sarah mentioned CSI. The general public has such a misconception of how things like this actually work. For example, running fingerprints through AFIS doesn't take mere seconds. It takes about an hour per person.

It is true that pit bulls grab and hold on. But what they most
often grab and refuse to let go of is your heart

That's my point. There was never anything printed or released saying "Meg's Cousin Died Because A Cop Made A Boo-boo". They just left the story as "Local Teenager Gunned Down After Threatening Cop With Gun" ... and that's the story that people "just know is the truth" ... I and my family dealt with the internet comments after that, and there weren't people going around saying "You guys, you don't know the real story, maybe there was a mistake ...", just a bunch of ignorant people blowing up the news forums with "Of course he should have died, that's what you get if you're dumb enough to pull a gun on a cop!"
