WFL and money talk

Re: WFL and money talk

• I think I'm having salad from Schlotzky's for lunch.

I'll spend $60+ on a good sports bra, but no more than $20 on a shirt of any kind. I own 2 pairs of Cole Haan shoes ($$) that I wear every day, basically, until they wear out, and that takes forever. I used to buy tons of cheap shoes, but I find I get better value this way.

I will pay extra for a direct flight, but paying more than $80 a night at a hotel just kills me. DH insists though. I'm a Motel 6 girl, and he's staying at the Hyatt.

I refuse to pay more than $5 for a watermelon, but I will pay $2 for a yellow bell pepper when the green ones are less than a dollar. Just because I like them more.

I found an awesome pair of limited jeans at a consignment shop for like $14.00.  They are amazing but I doubt I could spend more than 50 for a new pair.

• My most favorite pair of jeans come from Jones NY.  I thought that place was old lady stuff but once I got in there and really started looking around I found those jeans.  They're probably the only pair I wear right now.
• H thinks we're going to play the "trade in all the time" game, but he is much mistaken.  I keep cars until they're dead, and even then you can still sell them for something.

I do have some nice jeans. My favorite, so worn out they're see-through jeans are BKE.
• Sarah- I just bought my first pair of Cole Haan's. I love them. They are really comfy and while they were expensive I think they were a great investment.
Sarah - after the ordeal it was travelling to our HM, H and I agreed we're going to try and get direct flights for any future trips. And maybe first class if the plane ride is long enough to really warrant it.

Oh yeah. And DH has said that if Jet Blue doesn't go there, neither do we. We flew United to Hawaii and it was AWFUL. Good thing Jet Blue runs sales all the time to Ft. Lauderdale (where his parents are). <div>

• I didn't think about flights. I don't fly often, but I would definitely pay more for a direct flight.

Most of my shoes are hand-me-downs from my mom, ha. They are dress shoes, so hardly ever worn by either of us and therefore in good condition. I wear flip-flops almost every day, everywhere (assuming I'm not barefoot), and the 2 pairs I have now have somehow lasted like 5 years. I love them.
• oh yeah. Sarah reminded me. Vacations are never a time to skimp. I'll look for good deals on hotels/flights ahead of time, but when I'm there I want to enjoy it.  And, I only fly direct, and will probably upgrade to first class whenever possible (on Sun Country, it's like $50 if you do it day-of, and then you get baggaged checked free so it's totally worth it.)
• I finished breakfast about an hour ago; I will probably have a sandwich and cut veggies for lunch.

I guess we spend a lot on food. We do not eat out regularly but we spend a lot on groceries. It's not really because we only buy name brands, but I hate buying low-quality milk/meat/eggs, etc. We also spend a lot of money on loose-leaf tea, but we don't buy coffee from cafes.

I don't wear makeup daily (maybe once per month?), but the stuff I do have is pretty nice. I buy clothes (especially jeans) on sale if I can. I spend a lot of money on cat food.

In Response to Re:WFL and money talk:
Lunch is a sandwich, fruit and some yogurt. Maybe an iced tea. I scrimp on a lot of things, especially these days. I have a real issue paying full price for things like clothesnbsp;when they'll just go on sale at 40 off or better in a few weeks. We buy groceries at the store with the best sale overall and rarely splurge on anything big, except renovation projects. I don't have an issue buying things at full price if it's stuff I'm using all the time and consider a need contact solution, vitamins, etc. but I do tend to go to Walmart for things like that since I know their regular price will be cheaper than the drugstore or wherever. Posted by september's bride
See, I'd rather pay a few dollars more than EVER go to walmart. I avoid that place like the freaking plague.
• I scrimp on mostly everything! I buy generic groceries or in bulk. I hardly ever shop for clothes or shoes until I reallllly need them, I don't really buy makeup, I don't buy purses until my old one is falling apart, and even then I buy them for like $10 or less. I cant stomach paying so much for purses and clothes. When I shop I go to forever21-type stores and never usually buy any item over $20. I feel like I should be embarrassed saying this!

BUT last year I had no problem buying all new kitchen appliances and countertops. I can buy decorations for the house and justify it. We like to go out for dinner a lot, but I don't think we have ever dropped $100 on dinner. Our "nice expensive dinner out" is benihana and we usually spend about $75 at the most. We only go there for special occasions or for lunch menu prices.

Lunch is udon noodle soup and some edamame beans.

Ditto. The 50 cents here and there is totally worth my sanity if it means avoiding Wal-Mart and enjoying Target. ;)
• Lunch was a bit of leftover grilled pork chop, some butter rice and roasted roma tomatoes.  I wish I had more of it.

I splurge on meat and fruits.  Also, on entertainment:  dinners out, musicals, vacations, etc.

I do skimp on other groceries that aren't fresh.  I have no problem with store brands.

• I find it hard to save money on flights and stuff these days without being at least a little bit inconvenienced. I fly to NC a lot to see my dad, and always try to get a direct flight if I can, but have found a lot of round-trips costing well over $700/pp while a non-direct flight (with a stopover in Atlanta or whatever) can be about $300 round-trip. Sometimes the two-hour stop in Atlanta is worth it for me to save the cash.

When we were booking our trip to Jamaica, US Air had prices that were almost $500 less than other carriers, and when I looked into it, there was an 8-hour layover at JFK. Um. No thanks.

I wish there was a Target here. We do have a Shopko, which I prefer over Walmart.
• On the direct flight- I'm the opposite.  I've been flying back and forth from AR to PA since I was in the 4th grade.  I have always loved layovers and getting to 'explore' the different airports.  I have favorite restaurants in Detroit, Atlanta, and Cincinatti.  I love getting to stop in those places.

For our HM, we fly from LR to Houston and then directly to Mexico.  The layover is short and the AR - TX flight is really short also.

I basically have 2 purses. One is older than I've been with living with adam almost 7 years and the other is almost 3 years old. I don't care about purses enough to spend much money on them. I want a good messanger bag for this summer going to concerts but I will probably buy it on etsy.
• And it sounds like we splurge on a lot, but I cook a lot at home. Our grocery bills are manageable because I buy whole ingredients and use them all for high quality meals instead of buing prepackaged processed stuff. Yes, we still eat out some, but not nearly as often as we used to. I pay more for local ingredients as well. I think its good for my environment, my fellow Austinites, and our economy. Local goat cheese is $2 more per 6oz portion, but it tastes MUCH better than imported stuff, I know I'm supporting my neighbors, and because of the taste factor, I can use less to get the same result.

Lunch - I really want a gyro from the Mediterranean Cafe.  But I should eat my Lean Cuisine.

I'm pretty cheap about most things.  I won't buy expensive clothes or shoes.  DH bought me a D&B bag for my birthday, and Frye boots for Christmas and I almost choked they were so expensive.  I'll spend on a vacation, or a show, or an experience.  I'll spend for a good meal, or ingredients for a good meal.  I'll spend more than average for my gear - bicycles, camping stuff.

DH is funny - he will order water because he doesn't want to spend $2 for iced tea, but then he'll spend $5k on a bicycle.  He's very generous with other people.

I will drop money on Redken shampoo and conditioner.  I used to use Pantene but decided to splurge once on Redken and haven't looked back since.

I only buy Jiff PB regardless of if it's on sale or not.  Same with Dawn dish soap and Cascade dishwasher detergent. I also buy whatever good brand of bacon is on sale, but never the store brand of it.

When I lived in the midwest I would splurge on winter coats.  Here in NC, I don't really have to worry about that though.

I bargin shop for clothes.  I won't buy anything unless it's on sale and usually check TJ Maxx, etc before hitting up the mall.  Or I use the 30% off coupons at Kohls, though those tend to get me in trouble because I end up buying way more stuff than I should there.

I used to only buy the cheap body sprays from B&BW.   I finally decided a couple of years ago it was time to grow up and get "real" perfume.  Now I wouldn't dream of using the cheap stuff again.  I wear Coach Poppy now, and while it's $80/bottle, the bottle I'm on now has lasted almost a year and still isn't empty.

I balk at the idea of spending more than $50 on a purse, and I only buy 1 a year at most.  I use the same purse all the time until it's falling apart.  Partly because of the cost, and partly because I'm too lazy to switch purses constantly.

I have made it a trend to buy myself a new purse every year for my birthday.  So far I love NY&C purses.  I usually get them around $30.00 and they last all year.
