Do I need a host/hostess?

DId you are or are you having a host and hostess? What are their duties? We are having a plated meal, so I've been told that we don't really need them. Thanks!

We had 2 host couples because our cocktail hour actually started while we were finishing up photos at our ceremony site.  We wanted to be sure that there was someone "in charge" if anything came up at the party before my parents could get there.  They basically just made sure people found their escort cards, they knew where the bar was, where the coat check was, etc.  Once my parents were there, they were off the hook.  DH and I both chose the parents of our best childhood friends to fill the role.

My caterer requires a host and hostess.  I am having my aunt and uncle who live in my home town where the wedding is so they will know there duties.

Where I come from you don't have plated dinners it's always buffet style so the host and hostess release the tables to get there food.

We had a family style meal but still wanted a host/hostess. In my eyes they didnt do anything with the meal part of it.

We choose a couple that be both were friends with and they stood at the door, greeted guests, and directed them to things like the guest book, escort cards, bar, and bathroom. I had guest tell me how nice they were and how nice it was to be greeted at the door - made it more personal. It is not a long task. They were at the door with maybe a 1/2 hour to an hour as people are entering the reception.

I had never even heard of such a thing... I will have to ask around and see what we would want to do.

We didn't even think about it.  Everyone seemed to find everything just fine, but I think the venue coordinator may have helped facilitate.

YES. We are absolutely doing a host/hostess. But we are also not having a DOC, so they are basically serving as that. It's a friend of my FMIL and she plans events for a living.
