[QUOTE]My uncle, who is doing our wedding video said to me "you're not wearing a strappless, right?"  I'm not, but asked why that was even an issue.  He said that most of the weddings he does where the bride is wearing a strapless, she's always pulling and nudging it up while she's dancing.  He said they look stupid on video because thats all they do all night. This was actually the reason I didn't get a strapless, I knew I would always be checking to see that it wasn't falling.

I've worn several strapless dresses and never had that problem. I don't have a problem with strapless dresses, I just think that you shouldn't just get a strapless dress because they are "in" right now. You should go with what looks best on you.

  • Awesome article!  Thanks for posting!

This has given me the strenght to tell my photographer no jumping shots.  I never think they look good, but I sort of figured you have to do it since everyone else does!

I don't even know what kind of dress are "in" right now, to be honest.  But I do know that I have really small boobs and anything strapless just slides right down!  I'll feel more secure in a dress being held up by straps.

I agree - you should wear what is best for you

  • I've never seen the mini top hats.

I don't have a problem w/strapless dresses or birdcage veils.

I've also never been to a wedding w/a photo booth or candy buffet.

  • I also want to add smashing cake in each others face, not sure if it's trend or tradition but I would be so pissed if my wonderful wedding day makeup was messed up, lol.  I would prefer being fed cake lovingly into my mouth and vice versa..
  • loop,

Agreed. I told my FI that if there's any cake smashing, the marriage would be annulled :)
  • I agree with most, but I do like the signature drink idea. I don't want it to be "like Carrie Bradshaw", but rather as a money saving option. I'll have beer/wine, but I don't really want to have an open liquor bar. In the end, I think it would be cute to have a his and hers signature drink. If people don't like it, they can just drink beer or wine. I personally prefer liquor. My brother's wedding pulled it off well, having beer, wine, and a signature sangria using my sister in law's old family recipe. No one complained, and everyone loved it. It gets you to try something new.
  • I think the mini top hat is sort of an attempt at being Steampunk-ish.  The whole modified Victorian thing.

I think it's fitting IF the couple is into the whole Steampunk scene on a regular basis and it's just who they are, but then the bride has to have a Victorian gown, complete with bustle, and the groom needs to dress accordingly as well.  If you're going to go with it, then go with it the right way.

  • I love the birdcage veil (but not having one), love photobooths (can't afford one), love candy buffets (having candy centerpieces instead) and I love the jumping shot, and I really like damask if it's not overdone.

I agree about the props thing.  Strapless dresses?  To each their own, but it limits the choice for women who want straps... (I know straps can be added, but usually that doesn't help the neckline that is made for a strapless).

And, I agree with a pp about the cake smashing thing, if FI does that to me I'll be super pissed.

And about wedding music, our priest specifically told us secular music is not allowed - so that sort of limits the spectrum considerably.  So I'm also considering canon in D.  I don't think that's a big deal.

Sorry this all sounds like random ramblings, I'm pretty tired but bored out of my mind.

Ultimately, I think it's up to the bride and groom to choose what they want for their own wedding - not to do something because it's in, or not choose to NOT do something because everyone else is doing it.

  • I love birdcage veils, and I'm wearing one. But my wedding is also 1940's/big band style, so, yeah, that's kind of part of it...

We're having an open bar, but I don't see anything wrong with signature drinks. Hmm.

Strapless dresses are overdone; but you know your dress when you find it... and if it so happens to be strapless, so what? That's why I love my dress though.. it's got a super weird neckline (Impression Bridal style 3066).

I have not even heard of 3D videography. It just sounds idiotic.

The jump thing is way overdone. And everyone looks like a moron because there's always that one person that effs it up, hahaha. However, I will probably do it BECAUSE everyone looks silly, not gonna lie.

My last thought: if I saw someone wear that mini top hat, I would laugh hysterically. No questions asked. It's just funny.

  • This is a great thread, thanks for posting!

I wish the strapless dress trend was over, I ended up going with strapless because it was my dream dress otherwise but I really wanted some kind of straps when I started looking.
  • What is wrong with strapless dresses?

I hate sliding horizons in wedding/engagement photos, they are rarely done *right* and usually just look like the photographer didn't know what they were doing.

I agree with the rest of the list, but also agree that candy bars and photobooths are only wildly overdone here in the Knot, not in the real world :D

I love the "signature drink" thing for the money-saving reason that PPs have mentioned.  So if I could strike that and replace it with "choreographed dance numbers", that list would be perfect.

Also, strapless dresses.  Ugh.  I had to buy one, and I'll be having the seamstress put capsleeves on it, because it was the closest thing I could find to what I wanted.  Why doesn't anyone make dresses with sleeves anymore?!
