Re: Good morning!

  • Oh, I am back in this TK universe too!

  • Gurr, you win. *waves white flag* ;) That's seriously awesome for you though.

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised and happy because my phone wouldn't work in there and I forgot my book. Being there for two hours would have driven me crazy.
  • I've heard horror stories of people being in there for 4+ hours. I couldn't handle that.  I'm still dreading going to the DMV, hence why my license is still wrong.

Yeah that was lucky it didn't take so long. Thankfully I had my Nook so I read the whole time.

  • I'm not worried about going to the DMV, as long as going to the same place I've always gone to renew my license is a proper substitute for the DMV. There's only a line on specific days so I just won't go then. Problem solved.

That's good, I think I was about an hour at the DMV so not too bad. We came during a busy time though so that was our fault.
    image
  • it took me 10 minutes at Social Security....and I am not sure why it took that long, because I was the ONLY person there when I went.

I think it took about 45-60 mins at the DMV...but 9 months later, I have been too lazy to change my name on our utility bills. hahaha
  • Mari - Sorry, I was in TK alternate universe while you were discussing this.

My honest opinions, based on my style (you seem much more traditional than me) is the following.

    - Given the darkness of your furniture, the blue is too dark, even with white curtains and trim.  There should be more contrast.  The blue is good, but I would do a brighter, fresher blue.  Dark tones are not really current and unless they are done really well (think light grey or white furniture and bright accents) then it makes a room smaller and a tad depressing.  I would re-paint a brighter colour blue.  Maybe a french blue or a breezy ocean blue.

    - With the style of your furniture and with the older fireplace, those lace curtains will age the room more.  Go for a solid, but still breezy.  Be careful about your curtains if you are keeping the blinds.  The blinds are yellow.

    - To update the fireplace, spray paint the insert black. You can get a product for that.  Getting rid of the brass will do wonders for that fireplace. Otherwise, don't touch the stone or the wood.  I agree with your h to keep it.

    - Is your coffee table real wood?  You could sand it down and stain it something lighter?  To go with the style of your room, I'd stay away from white, modern pieces.  I'd find something older that is real wood that you can paint an off white and distress yourself.  I think a distressed coffee table would brighten it up and fit the style of the room.  If your pieces are real wood, I would paint them and distress them, because otherwise, there's nothing wrong with them.

    - You need brighter throws for your couch

    - Some bright vases as someone mentioned would brighten up your fireplace also.

That would be a start anyway and a fairly inexpensive one.

  • Habs, thank you for your help! I need someone like you I am NOT good at this stuff at all. Yeah I was thinking that we may have to repaint the room, not looking forward to that at all.

Those curtains were an example, but I will look at more solids. We are not keeping those blinds, they came with the house and H is not into home decor so he never touched them so now that i'm living there decor stuff is going to get done.

I wonder if he agree to paint the insert...I don't see why not.

No it's not real and I think it's too big for the space.

Yes we are going to get brighter throw pillows, what color would be you recommend?

    Thanks everyone!!!

  • Good morning. My boss is an idiot. I am looking forward to going to Baltimore next week though. I like Habs' suggestions re: Mari's room. Mica thanks for continuing to play gobetween. I agree it is past the point of getting old.
  • Mari - I hope he agrees to the insert.  It's an easy way to update your fireplace without touching the natural stuff.

I would do white (off white though, not too stark) with some bright accents, whatever colours you want.  Greys, yellows, greens.  It's up to you.  It depends a bit on the room colour you decide on.

I don't think the table is too big, I think that it's too dark.  But if it's not real wood, then it's sort of moot.  I would hit up some antique stores or some garage sales and see if you can find a gem.

  • Habs- Hopefully he will he is more particular about the natural stuff and he has mentioned not liking the brass which i'm sure was in the original house when it was built in 1970.

Okay I will see what I can find. I will just stick those in a yard sale.

Maybe I can find a good one that's a lighter color, yeah we got the furniture BEFORE we painted the room...probably not the way to go.
    image
  • Mari my coffee table was bought at a yard sale for $20 and it's a light birch ball and clawl coffee table. Everyone else loves it. LOL

  • I freaking made it here at last! I was stuck in the other universe.

I have great news. H isn't buying the ugly car. He's buying this:

  • Steffi- I am hesitant to buy a new coffee table because then we would need to end tables as well. So hmmm, decisions decisons.

    Daff that's a cute car!

  • Welcome back! So I ended up getting these curtains off Ebay...what do yall think?

  • Mari - I browsed target, and I don't know what the budget is, but if you go with a brighter ocean type blue (with a bit of green in it, KWIM?) then THIS would look awesome with it.  You could even keep your dark end tables.  But I would paint the bases brighter and change out the shade.

A couple of THESE paired with something with colour like THIS would be a fun punch of colour.  You can pull that pink in with flowers, vases, even your lamps!

With off white, cream or champagne curtains.

I think they are too white for your space, but you'll have to see when you get there.  I go for softer white colours with the deeper neutrals because it isn't so harsh.  Bright white is tricky and needs the right space.

Also, the top of them is pretty traditional.  I prefer the grommet ones, or something less "floofy".

  • Ranch, do you have pics of the bathroom?  I love the modern wall coverings (they aren't called wall paper anymore, because it has a negative connotation).  Done right, they can be amazing.

  • That's cool, Rach.  I've seen some really nice wallpaper lately.

What was the ugly car, Daff?  That one is cute.

Hey, it's a pavement colored SUV! I had one and so many people pulled out in front of me it was terrible.

I like the other one much better.

Be glad you only have one, all of ours are that way. Our kitchen looks pretty cute though. We have worked at it and had to update the appliances some.

  • Mari - If you buy something a bit unconventional like that, you won't have to buy new side tables, which would save you some money.

Yes that's what I was thinking. Would you still put coasters and etc on it or just leave it as it?
    image
  • I would have a little tray on it, that you can put magazines, a candle and drinks on.  I wouldn't put a cup directly on it, because it's plush and the stability isn't as great.
