I want to know

Since it's Friday (and I feel like it), I’m bringing up the death panel controversy. I’m confused about this, it seems like a lot of people think the healthcare reform bill will put grandma to sleep. I genuinely need someone to explain to me how it’s possible so many people believe this. Is there anyone here who believes it? All it is is an advanced directive, which has been a recommended best practice for doctors for decades. The language in the bill is clear as day about this. Obviously I am missing something, or people just don't read anymore and base opinions on what they see on foxnews.

Re: I want to know

  • people just don't read anymore and base opinions on what they see on foxnews. And some people just make jabs at foxnews anytime they have something to say. Classy.
  • No one reads anymore and if they do they have little or no comprehension.  Reading comprehension is seriously lacking in the U.S. IMO.
  • What do you mean put grandma to sleep? Like putting her lights out? All I know is that AARP is opposed to the healthcare reform because in order to do what is suggested for the reform would require cuts to Medicare/Medicaid, which the seniors are very protective over and don't want there to be any cutting to their working program.
  • I want to strike Sarah Palin in the face repeatedly with my shoe.

  • And some people just make jabs at foxnews anytime they have something to say. Classy. Considering Fox news personalities are the ones who keep bringing it up, I'd say she's pretty spot on.Unless you want to yell at Sarah Palin, who was the person that said it in the first place.  Right after she brought up her disabled child (again) to make a point to the media, after yelling at the media for bringing up her children too much.  She can see Russia from her house, you know.

  • No one reads the darn bills anymore. Sarah Palin called it a death panel & then all of the news channels ran with it. Again most people don't read, let alone think. Now they are taking it out of some of the versions of the bill.

  • None of this even matters since Obama isn't even a US citizen and is going to get thrown out of that White House any day now.

  • What?!  You mean socialization of our healthcare is going to KILL EVERYONE!?!SarahSmile, even the BBC has been doing stories over the inaccurate stories and commentators on FoxNews.  So... yah.
  • TLV, I don't know much about medicare, but according AARP, they really like it and don't want money to get cut. And I can understand that even a program that's not great is not going to improve with cuts.

  • I like you LPSTL,  but that was kind of insulting. Have you really sat down and watched Fox news? Or are you getting your opinion of Fox news from another news source?  Yes, there are some extreme right wingers like Hannity and Beck who have one-sided thinking, but not all of the new casters on Fox are this way. If I am not mistaken, MSNBC is very left sided. Why don't they get trashed more for being this way? Oh, it's because it is not popular to disagree with Obama and his administration. Also, I am a Republican and although I do not like the reform bill in it's current form,  I do not feel that the bill will put grandama to sleep.

  • I can understand that too, and I'm not surprised AARP feels that way.  I'm looking at it from my own and my mom's perspective.  I'm going to go back to yesterday's argument though and use sasha's words: I'd rather everyone have mediocre health care than only the lucky ones have good health care.  Young people need help too.

  • TLV, I don't know much about medicare, but according AARP, they really like it and don't want money to get cut. I was watching one town hall meeting with AARP reps (I think they were AARP reps) and an old guy got up and started yelling about how he didn't want the government involved in this list of things, (I know one of them was money, and another was his house or something) including his Medicare.  And the person kept trying to tell him that the government WAS Medicare, but he just kept getting more agitated and angry.  Seriously, these are people that vote.  Freaks me out.

  • Well said, Ricks. I think Foxnews and MSNBC are both skewed in opposite directions. I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
  • SarahSmile, do you think foxnews has been conveying accurate information about the bill to it's viewers? I'm not being snarky, I'm genuinely interested in why people aren't questioning the death panel accusations.

  • They just ran with it.  My very liberal friend even seemed to think this as of last week and I nearly fell out of my chair.  It's ridiculous, but so is healthcare in it's current form.  I'm not saying that I think the bill is perfect, but I think any change or at least a discussion is a step in the right direction at this point.

  • SarahSmile, even the BBC has been doing stories over the inaccurate stories and commentators on FoxNews. So... yah. I'm fairly confident a story questioning a certain report is different than generalizing people who watch a news station.
  • None of this even matters since Obama isn't even a US citizen and is going to get thrown out of that White House any day now. You can thank Lou Dobbs (CNN) for that. It's stupid. He is obviously a US citizen. That is NOT TRUE. He was born in HAWAII.  Not the United States!

  • Well said, Ricks. I think Foxnews and MSNBC are both skewed in opposite directions. I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle.Excellent point.
  • *raises hand* I do watch Fox News because I think it's good to know what they're saying.  However, I still think it's incredibly biased.  I'm not saying MSNBC isn't either, but I don't watch that station.  I stick to CNN and BBC.Basically, the comparison that's being made now, is to the NHS in Britain, and I have to say, from what I have heard from the Brits, it's actually pretty decent.  Of course there are issues.  There are always issues, but to universally denounce it as flawed and killing more people (as the current Fox News British boy has been saying) than it saves, is ALSO inaccurate.  News definitely takes the place of personal research these days, and opinions are invariably formed by the opinions they hear from TV.  I was freaking embarrassed when I saw some of the clips they were showing on BBC from town hall meetings.  People shouting and screaming incoherently and frankly, not knowing what the hell they are talking about.
  • If I am not mistaken, MSNBC is very left sided. Why don't they get trashed more for being this way? Oh, it's because it is not popular to disagree with Obama and his administration.I can assure you that if a bunch of MSNBC anchors and commentators said that George Bush wanted a "death panel" to kill off old people as part of his healh care reform, I would have thought they were BSC.  Maybe people are trashing Fox News because they're the ones yelling the loudest.  And if you're going to yell the loudest, make sure you've got your sh*t straight before you open your mouth.

  • Nugget, the seniors are the biggest voting group and I think whatever they like best in terms of health care is going to win because they will turn out in mass numbers, probably even bigger than past years, because this so greatly affects them.
