Bad names

Adding this to the "Bad Names File": I have an Aunt Elly. I always assumed her name was Eleanor. Last night I received a very nice card from her, congratulating us on our wedding. It was signed "Aunt Elfreide". I had no idea! No wonder she goes by Elly!

H has an aunt named Lolly.  It's not short for anything.

I used to draw loans for a mortgage company.  I got one where the borrower's name was:

Pleas E. Dye, Jr.

JUNIOR! Which means someone actually named their son that after going around with that name their whole life.

Elfreide sounds like one of those names you'd make up out of fun.  Like I call our office manager Ed - Edweirdo, or Edaferd or something equally weird just to be funny.

There is a basketball player for NC State named Farnold Degand. I laugh evertime I see his name.

SIL's baby boy is due in March.  For a while, they were set on Logan.  I like "Logan," a lot.  All of the sudden, it went from "Logan" to "Marquin."  Ewww.  Luckily, she's now back to "Logan" (or "Myles," which is a lot better than "Marquin,"  IMO)

I've said it here before but one of my exes had an aunt named Cherry Pie.  She goes by Cherry, I believe.

My great grandma's name is Arabella Leona Docstater Lallinger.  Nothing terribly unfortunate but a mouthfull nonetheless!  ETA - She's German, in case you couldn't tell.

According to my mother, it's pronounced El-free-da. I'm not sure what her maiden name is (she's my mother's SIL) but her married name is very Irish. Elfriede O'Somethin. It's an odd contrast.

I still maintain the best name I ever saw was Oral Sexton.

I had a teacher in high school whose first name was Lolly. Her last name was Memory. I always thought that was the weirdest first and last name EVAR.

My grandmother's middle name is Gene, the masculine spelling (I think, anyway.) My other grandmother's name is Minnie, and she's hated it since birth. I think it's a really cute name though, very 20's to me.

H has a cousin with the middle name Von. It was supposed to be Vaughan (a family name), but her mother couldn't spell it.

Since they have a German last name, people think her last name is Von K___.

My dad's middle name (and he's a junior) is Gerson. He hates it and wouldn't tell me what his middle name was for a long time as a kid.

I love Madison for a girl if we have one but I was thinking of spelling it Madisyn. Then I see all those name things you can buy (keychains, mugs, etc.) and wonder if I should leave it Madison so she can buy the stuff. I have never been able to buy anything with my name because they never have it.

My cousin has a student named "L-ia" but apparently you're supposed to pronounce the dash mark (which is just not pronounceable). So when you say her name it's "ledashia".

DONT DO IT!!!  Adding random "y"s to a name is going to be so outdated in like a year.  Step away from the unfortunate trend and resist the temptation!

I would be less worried about her finding stuff with her name on it and more worried about her going through her entire life having people spell her name wrong and think it's crazy that there is a y in it.  Don't do that to your kid.

I know a couple who named their daughter Madisyn with a "y."  I was kind of disappointed that they didn't use an "o," especially because her middle name is Avery, which already has a "y" in it.

My mom was going to name me Chastity.  Thank God my grandma talked her out of that one.  Noodle's grandma was a big fat racist and hated his name (because it's "Jewish", according to her) so she just called him Elmer his entire life.  No idea why she picked Elmer.

I know a girl who's first name is Baby.  You know how all hospitals call the newborns "Baby Smith" or "Baby Jones" until the parents offically pick a name?  Well I guess her mom couldn't pick a name, saw her bracelet when they gave the baby back to her and decided to just stick with "Baby".

I would like to use letters from our names to spell our kids names and neither of us have an O but we have a Y.

Like for a middle name I was thinking Shey (SH from the first two letters of my first name and EY from the last two letters of FI's last name).

I never thought that sounded like a crazy thing to do but I bet you ladies will. Oh well.

Please don't spell your daughter's name like that.  It's horrible.

My aunt's name is Irish.  I always thought that was interesting.  FI has a cousin named Ruby Jewel.

I had a teacher who was named Richard, but went by Diick. His last middle name was Les. Diick Les.  (The knot made me add the extra i's.)

A 3rd cousin on my dad's side is named Onezime (O na zim) Lonnie R___. He actually names his son the same thing. THey both go by Lonnie. There are some freakishly weird cajun names out there in our family, though. My grandma was Delvina, and everyone always thought we were saying Velveeta.

Oh, and there is a politician back home named Bill Williams. That's just redundant.

Again with the Le-dash-a.  I call bullshiiit.  And I have seen odd names (my own children have odd names, but I don't think they're heinous), but I don't buy that one for minute.  Or the apocryphal "Shithead" or "Female" or any of those.  Everyone had a cousin who knows someone who saw it with her own eyes. 

A boy in my high school was named Bolton Bangs.  I always loved that.  I have an Uncle Harvey and an Aunt Pearl; I love the old-fashionedness of those.
