I actually think it's a good idea to pick out a stone if you want the proposal to be a TOTAL surprise, and then to go get it set later. Some women just want the plain ring, though, and get a wrap for it or something. I'd much rather that than have my FI pick out an elaborate ring I might hate.

My e-ring is platinum and my wedding band is white gold.  I paid less than $400 for my wedding band.  Obviously it's not at par with my e-ring.  I too am not bothered by it moosey.

I know others have said it but seriously...you should google white gold. It isn't that lovely white silvery color without some help from rhodium plating. White gold is just a very light yellow gold until it gets its bath in the rhodium. That is why white gold jewelry needs to be replated every once in awhile (as anyone who has worn off the plating knows first hand). Get it plated if that is all that is bothering you. It isn't horribly expensive. Don't love it?  Then you have other options-If you saved a lot of money on it compared to buying it in the store then consider this a lesson learned and move on. If you spent more than you are comfortable losing to a learning curve then challenge it with ebay. Or just resell the darn thing yourself (or melt it down). Absolutely HAVING TO HAVE a certain millimeter etc is something you should probably have made yourself (see? melt that ring down and you are half way there).

 But seriously don't flame the guy simply because you didn't bother to educate yourself beforehand. It isn't his fault you didn't do your homework on what you REALLY wanted. He can't read your mind.

Anyhoo. When we got my engagement ring made, we asked our jeweler about white gold. She said that unplated white gold isn't really as shiney, and the rhodium plating is expensive but gives it the look that everyone expects. I went to a local jeweler I trust for exactly that kind of thing -- ordering a ring on the internet, you aren't going to be able to have that kind of conversation. (It helps that I'm a bit of a geek when it comes to rocks and metal, but yeah.)

If you buy from a jeweler who is not reputable this is usually what happens. BTW I voted be happy you will recover 80% back.
