[QUOTE]In Response to Re: FFF : Hmm.. I never thought of it like that before, but I guess you're right. The wedding theme talk - I remember several times when I first started posting, people would ask about unity ceremonies other that candle or sand and there were always like 2 posters who would be like "THE WHOLE CEREMONY IS ABOUT UNITY!!!!!! WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED?!??!" It's a similar thing - do you "need" a theme or a unity ceremony? No, but a lot of people want them and it's not something to get worked up or upset about, in my opinion.

I agree, and that is what bugged me about the posters who took it as a chance to make a dumb joke.

  • I think of you guys every time I start to say the "r" word (really trying to break the habit, but it just slips out when I'm muttering to myself).  Then I try to replace it with "idiot", which I remember was also discussed as an offensive term on here.  Then I just don't know what to say.
  • I'm sorry to have brought up the politically correct-ness crap.  Honestly, it doesn't bother me a ton to see/hear other people use the term lame, but for myself, I'm trying to get it out of my vocabulary.  Between my patients with disabilities and my MIL who is crutch-dependent, I'm insulting important people in my life when I use it to indicate something derogatory.

My go-to substitute is either butthead or buttface.  They've got none of the connotations of the "r" word, communicate the same basic idea, and generally get a laugh because most people stop using butthead and buttface at around the age of nine.

  • I love the world "lame."  It's so wonderfully apathetic.  You can't tell someone that you think they're being "stupid" or "moronic" without implying that on some level, you care -- if only a little tiny bit.  Most negative adjectives are emotionally charged like that.  But you can tell someone she's being lame with no personal investment whatsoever.

I also don't buy "lame" as a derogatory term.  The second dictionary definition (according to Merriam Webster) is "lacking needful or desirable substance" -- which is EXACTLY the way the way the word is used on the boards.  I have yet to see anyone use it as derogatory slang referring to people with disabilities.

I think that it is admirable to work to change your vocabulary to eradicate offensive terms.  I just start to take issue when people get rude policing others on their own usage.  I've told FI that the N word and the F word (the homophobic one) are offensive to me, and please try to avoid using them in my presence.  Can I change his vocabulary? No.  But can I make him aware of how it affects me in a polite respectful way? Sure.

My sister on the other hand who called him out in front of my extended family for using the "R word, that I see as rude and unhelpful.
