• Well in that case ;)

I intensely dislike the idea of a Kindle and though I've been asked if I want one as I'm a voracious reader, I really don't. I like my books to be... you know... books.

So Salt, why do you think I'm an idiot? Because I said that stupid thing about P2? Or am I saying other idiotic things without knowing it? Which, I guess, would be the definition of an idiot because if you know you're saying idiotic things, you're just a douche.

You can also get a ton of classic books for free online at http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page

My H uses it at work all the time and has read a ton of classics on it.

• I have to say I agree with Alix re: Kindle. Even in school, I'd take notes on my laptop and have to print them off to study. I read much better on paper physically in my hands than on a screen.

But I'm torn, because I love the portability. Some books are big.

Me too!! And it drives my H crazy. He's read all these classics on the website I just shared and he's so frustrated because I won't read them online. I just don't like that. I want a book in my hands. So for my birthday he bought me his favorites in real book form and I'm reading White Fang right now. :)

yeah, I have gaps between some of my classes at school and would love to be able to just pop out the kindle and read. of course, i could just continue to bring the actual books with me. decisions, decisions.

• Alix - I think that's where people are divided on the kindle. Those who love books, and those who don't care about anything except reading the story. I'm not saying I don't like physical books, but sometimes holding them gets awkward, especially a really heavy one. I like displaying them in the living room, though, and I'll still have paper copies of my favorites. Supposedly you can get lost in a kindle, according to those who use them, and forget you're holding an electronic device.

Thanks for the heads up Dani. I knew about that, but I guess knotting gets in the way of reading classics at work. :-/

I am guessing this post is going to be pretty high up on the list.

FWIW - I am super against the Salvation Army ringing that durn bell before Thanksgiving even came and went. There is a time and place for everything people. This annoyed me particularly bc we used to support the SA before we got to chose charities in our community to give to out of Mike's paycheck.
• edited December 2009
Re: being selective about charities/corporations, I find this to be a slippery slope. I've researched where proceeds go from many corporations, and it ends up being a "blue" or "red" issue, and I don't like to fully support either political influence. So if I was to stand up for my beliefs through my purchases, I would have to get rid of my computer, bank account, gym membership, foods I like... it never ends. Now if I hear of a company explicitly using proceeds to fund campaigns against something I believe in, like gay marriage, you can bet I would never buy their product again. But the line has to be drawn somewhere.

• How do you mark your place in a kindle? Does it just stay on the last page you were on or how does that work.

I love Project Gutenberg. I actually volunteer for them as a proofreader. Or did before I got so busy.

Also, I don't donate to the SA (or any religious group that practices discrimination) for the same reasons as merymac. And I want a Kindle for Christmas.
• I think part of it is that I'm blessed with frequent migraines and I figure staring at a screen as often as I read (which is usually at least 3 hours a day) would just make things worse.

That being said, yes, call me old fashioned but books should be paper. I love them too much to switch to that thing - I'd miss the smell, the texture, the feel of flipping pages.

Plus, if I dropped a kindle in the bath by accident, I think I'd get the WTFBBQ look from Jay when I emerged with a sheepish grimace on my face.
image
• I am also of the "I like my books to be books" club.

I guess I could see a use for it though. If I'm traveling, and currently reading some thick biography or novel, I think I would rather be transporting a little kindle then a bulky book. But in general, I couldnt see myself ever getting into them as a replacement for the real thing.

It's not backlit like a computer screen. It actually looks like paper in a book. The text looks like black ink and the background is sort of white/gray like book paper. It also doesn't use any electricity when you read, because there's no back light, only when you "flip" the page. It's creepy and kind of cool. It's also supposed to show up better in direct sunlight than an LCD screen.

iPod and iPhone are less expensive and even smaller!

Opalsky, I love you girl, but really? Show me a religious group that doesn't practice SOME sort of discrimination. Admittedly, many are WAY closer than others, but then you start to get into issues of whether these religions even have a true dogma, doctrinal system, or any type of consistency. Thus, are they even organized religion at all? Interesting debate anyway :)

Yup. It hold around 1500 books supposedly, and you can load which ever you want.

Nebb - good question. I *think* it stays there, but in most books you can also navigate around from the title page - just click on a chapter and you'll go to that chapter.

• FWIW, TJ said that her job was to "entertain men". Based on the substance of that thread, I also took it to mean that she was an escort... But I also seem to remember the mentioning of lines being blurred and so to try to remove all of those that were related to her job would be difficult. Of course, this could also mean that TJ did porn.... Or she could have made up the whole thing, which is my bet. But then again I wasn't really a fan of TJ. I don't think she was a fan of me either. shucks.
