Just take it one thing at a time, Rach. The important stuff will get done, and I'm sure it will all come together beautifully.
That makes sense, Anna. I've never really gotten into a heated debate with anyone about it. I don't think I would ever tell someone they can't consider themselves Southern because of where they're from, because that's just stupid.

YGPM back!
Thanks for being smarter than me!
(I'm working on a giant project at work while there's caterers setting up for the client party tonight all around my desk, so my brain is completely fried.)
I think you are what you identify with, Anna. It's not up to anyone else to determine that. I lived in CT for years when I was little and we had a hard, crappy time there so I'm sure my perception of what it means to live in CT is totally different from someone else's. No one knows your family, your upbringing, your friendships and your general culture just from your zip code. If to you, you're Southern, then you are even though that means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. I like how threads about disagreements can turn into threads about cake while threads about cake can turn into threads about disagreements on degrees of Southernness. And I've heard it a million times. There is a pretty big North Florida South Florida divide at UF and stuff like "you can't be Southern if you're from Tampa" gets thrown around a lot. Well, there are plenty of Southern Belles in Tampa, there are rednecks in Miami, there are guidos in Pensacola. There are all kinds of people everywhere. So it's just an irrational irritation of mine. I grew up in Orlando, which being seem to be so adamant about labeling "not Southern," but my family (my mom's side obviously) is quite Southern. Most of my friends growing up were pretty Southern too. It's something I identify with so I think it's bullshit when people make blanket generalization like "Florida isn't the South" and "no one in Orlando is Southern." And I know this is a ridiculous thing to be bothered by, but it still bothers me. It's probably exacerbated by all the South hate I encountered in grad school up here in the big bad North. I'm with you on this. I'm originally from Indiana and Indiana gets a bad rap for being really redneck. I'm sorry, but I grew up less than an hour from Chicago with a University at my doorstep. My highschool was one of the top ranked in the state, had very broad offerings, and an average enrollment over 2000. Yes, If I drove 15 minutes in the right direction I could end up stuck behind a tractor in the middle of a cornfield where grades k-12 were in one building and a graduating class consisted of 10 kids. But that's not where I grew up.

It pleases me too. On this great big board, someone else went to my tiny little school that most people outside of our state haven't even heard of!
